Chapter 9

Author: Crispy Coco
Before Kaelan could respond, a shrill voice cut through the air from behind him.

"Kaelan! I finally found the proof!" Seraphina brandished a file, pointing a sharp finger at me. "This bitch is stealing our pack's core genetic secrets! The research she's doing is an act of theft! She's going to sell our secrets to the human world!"

The students and professors around us stopped, their curiosity piqued.

Seraphina grew more frantic. "Look at the evidence! Her lab notes, her inventory of gene samples

At the werewolf council two weeks later, Kaelan didn't fight it. He even transferred a hundred million dollars to me, with the sole hope that I could live happily in the human world. The ceremony was quick.I felt the invisible chain in my chest finally snap.Across from me, Kaelan clutched his chest, reeling from the backlash of the broken mate bond.As I walked out of the council hall, Kaelan followed me."Clara…"I stopped, but didn't turn around."I'm sorry," he choked out. "Clara, if I could go back…""But you can't," I said flatly. "So don't waste your time dreaming.""I know you hate me, but—""I don't hate you," I said, my voice devoid of all emotion. "Hate is an emotion. And when I look at you, Kaelan, I feel nothing at all."Kaelan’s face went white. He staggered back a step.I left without another look back.A month later, I used the money from Kaelan to establish a brand-new genetics laboratory. The Miller Genetic Research Center. Named after my father. It had the most adva

Her lab notes, her inventory of gene samples, her communications with human research institutes! It's all here! It's irrefutable proof!"I watched her performance with cold detachment. Three years, and she was still the same, twisting the truth, turning black into white. But this time, Kaelan’s reaction surprised me. He didn’t immediately believe her. Instead, a deep frown creased his brow, and a flicker of disgust crossed his face."Seraphina, what are you talking about?""What am I talking about?" Seraphina shrieked. "See for yourself!

I gathered my data files from the lab bench, walked around him, and headed for the door. He reached for me, but I coldly sidestepped his hand."Clara, listen to me—""There's nothing to talk about," I said without looking back. "Don't come here again."I thought his Alpha pride would make that our last meeting. But he didn't leave. The next day, my assistant, Sarah, knocked on the lab door. "Dr. Miller, someone sent you lunch." She held up an exquisite thermal container. "Beef Wellington, they said. Flown in from Pierre's. And this."A priceless bouquet of white roses, dew still clinging to the petals.I looked at the items and laughed without humor.Beef Wellington? For our third anniversary, I had made spaghetti with tomato sauce. Kaelan didn't take a single bite. He said he was going to Pierre's instead. There, he and Seraphina ordered two servings of Beef Wellington. I sat across from them and drank water all night. The cheapest salad on the menu was $68, and I didn't have the auth

I stood at the entrance of Columbia University's biology department, clutching my father's urn.Three years. I thought I would never come back here. But now, I had no other choice. This was the only home I had left.I took a deep breath and pushed open the familiar door."Clara?" Professor Davis looked up from his workbench, his glasses nearly falling off his nose. "My God, is that really you?"He rushed over, looking me up and down. "Child, you look… what happened?"I forced a smile. "Professor, I want to come back.""Come back?" He frowned. "Mr. Sterling informed us you'd be dedicating yourself to your role as his mate—""We're separated," I cut him off. "For good."Professor Davis was silent for a moment, his eyes filled with sympathy. "Clara, you know how brutal academia is. Three years away from cutting-edge research, your knowledge base is probably—""This is my research proposal."I pulled a thick document from my bag. I had spent all night writing it."I want to isolate and stu

Kaelan stared at the scattered papers, his face a mask of cold fury.He whipped around to face Seraphina. His voice was a low growl. "What. Is. This?"Seraphina dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "Kaelan, I did it for the pack! Clara's just a human. She doesn't understand our ways! Our pack values discipline! She was always asking for expensive things, I had to be strict! I was protecting the pack's assets from her!"She cried pitifully, as if she were the one who had been wronged."Look, she even wanted the most expensive shampoo! And those designer clothes, thousands of dollars a piece! If I didn't watch her, she would have bankrupted the pack!"Kaelan's jaw tightened, but he didn't look at her. He was looking at me.I watched the scene and couldn't help but laugh."Seraphina, you're a hell of an actress."I walked to the desk, pulled open the bottom drawer, and took out a file."But you forgot one thing." I threw the document on the floor. "Last month, a luxury apa

Kaelan froze, staring at the urn in my arms. A strangled sound escaped his throat."Impossible," he finally choked out, his voice raw. "Henry was fine last week.""He was on life support. I sent every nutrient pack I could get—""That was three days ago," I cut in, my voice flat. "He died three days ago. He would have lived, if the fifty thousand dollars had just gotten there in time."Seraphina started sobbing beside him. "Clara, you can't blame me! I was just following the rules! It was a huge amount, and it involved pack gene secrets. I had to be careful! How was I supposed to know Uncle Henry would suddenly—""Shut up." Kaelan shot her a cold glare. He turned back to me. Guilt flashed in his eyes, but anger quickly took its place."Clara, you should have told me sooner! Do you have any idea what I was dealing with? Sterling Group is negotiating a ten-billion-dollar deal! Why didn't you just come to me? Why go through all that tedious paperwork?"I stared at him, my mind reeling in
