Chapter 7Unexpected Encounter

Author: Zoe bear
The two colleagues walking beside me stiffened and quickly pressed themselves against the wall, sneaking glances at Emma like she was royalty.

Emma’s gaze swept across them—but never once landed on me. Her indifference stung more than if she’d acknowledged me. Without a word, she turned and entered the elevator, surrounded by a pack of senior executives like a crowned Luna returning to her throne.

The elevator doors closed with a soft chime. My colleagues both exhaled deeply.

"That had to be Alpha Darius’s partner, right?" one of them whispered, her voice buzzing with awe. “She’s gorgeous! And did you see that rune-enchanted battle robe? It’s probably worth more than my yearly salary.”

“Seriously,” the other gushed. “She totally gives off noble blood vibes.”

Then they turned to me. “What did you think, Rae?”

I dropped my gaze and said evenly, “She’s… exactly what you’d expect.”

What they didn’t know was that Emma was my half-sister.

Well—technically not even that. When Emma was eight, my father left my mother to marry her mother. It wasn’t just a scandal. It was betrayal wrapped in entitlement. He claimed it was to “spare them from hardship” as if shattering one family to save another made him some noble martyr.

After the divorce, my emotionally fragile mother and I moved in with my grandmother. My uncle tried to help, but his business slowly fell apart over the years. Meanwhile, Emma’s side flourished like they’d never known loss.

I heard my father spoiled her relentlessly to make up for the childhood she didn’t have. Private tutors. International schools. Expensive training in etiquette and arcane theory. Everything I dreamed of once. And to her credit, Emma rose to meet every expectation.

She’d been groomed for greatness, and she wore it well.

I used to think we’d never cross paths again. But the universe had a twisted sense of humor. Despite all the effort I poured into Darius—years of loving him, building a home, bearing his children, his heart had never truly belonged to me.

But Emma? One look was all it took.

“Rae? Are you okay?” one of my coworkers asked gently.

I blinked and pulled myself out of the storm cloud. “I’m fine.”

I told myself none of this mattered anymore. The divorce was practically signed. Darius could give his heart to whomever he wanted. It wasn’t my concern. Not anymore.

Later that evening, I stayed at work far too long. Nine o’clock slipped by before I realized it. Just as I was about to leave, my phone buzzed. Zoe, my best friend, was slurring through the line. She’d had too much to drink and needed a ride home.

I finished the report I was working on, grabbed my keys, and left the building.

Twenty minutes later, I pulled into the restaurant parking lot. I was locking my car when a small figure darted across the entrance, lit by the glow of the streetlamps.

My heart nearly stopped.

Lyra?

She was skipping along in her usual carefree way, her tiny backpack bouncing behind her. But she was supposed to be in Dallas, studying at Moon Claw Academy.

Had she returned with Darius?

I hadn’t received a single call, a single message. No “Mom, I’m back.” No “Can we meet?” Nothing.

I clutched my bag tightly and followed her at a distance, my pulse hammering in my ears. My daughter. Just a few feet ahead. And yet… so far away.

She rounded a corner toward the main lobby. I hesitated—then froze.

Emma appeared, surrounded by a few familiar faces from Darius’s inner circle. I ducked behind a planter and slid into a nearby lounge chair, turning my back to them.

“Aunt Emma!” Lyra’s voice rang with joy. She ran up and threw her arms around her.

Emma bent down, smiling sweetly. “Lyra! You’re back?”

“Yup! Daddy brought me early—just in time for your birthday!” she chirped. “We made you a necklace together. Look!”

I pressed my palm hard against my chest. I couldn’t breathe.

“A handmade gift? From you and Daddy?” Emma gasped in mock surprise. “It’s beautiful, Lyra. Thank you. I love it.”

Lyra’s voice turned pouty. “I missed you so much. If I couldn’t call you every day, I don’t think I could’ve survived Dallas…”

Emma laughed softly. “I missed you too.”

Then I heard his footsteps.

I didn’t need to see him. I’d memorized that stride over the years, the quiet power in his step, the deliberate weight, like the world could crumble and he’d keep walking.

“Daddy!” Lyra squealed.

“Happy birthday,” Darius said, his voice low and steady.

“Hmm,” Emma responded with a gentle smile.

“Didn’t you prepare another gift for Aunt Emma, Daddy? Give it to her!”

Before anyone could answer, another voice sliced through the moment like a blade.

“I wonder what kind of aunt enjoys destroying families.”

Luca.

I turned just enough to see him, leaning against a pillar like a miniature sentinel. He was holding the shield pendant I’d fixed for him, his expression unreadable, his voice cold and distant.

“Lyra’s too naive to see through your act,” he said, eyes locked on Emma. “Stop pretending you care.”

Silence.

Emma’s smile faltered. Everyone looked uncomfortable, shuffling their feet. Except Lyra, who blew a raspberry at her brother.

“You’re no fun!”

Luca didn’t even flinch. He turned and walked to the far end of the hallway, his shoulders tense. A few seconds passed. Then one of Darius’s friends chuckled, breaking the tension.

“Guess that gift was a private one, huh?” he said, nudging Darius. “Didn’t want us stealing your thunder?”

The others laughed knowingly.

“It’s already been given,” Darius said simply.

Lyra huffed. “You saw Aunt Emma without me again?! Rude!”

Another round of laughter. Emma just offered a tight-lipped smile. “Let’s head upstairs.”

They walked away, their footsteps echoing down the corridor.

I sat frozen, the ache in my chest growing unbearable. Lucy, my wolf, had curled into a tight ball deep inside me, quiet and still. As if she, too, had nothing left to say.

My fingers were numb. My eyes burned. I rubbed them roughly, desperate not to cry, and forced myself to stand.

I wasn’t part of their story anymore.

Not the birthday. Not laughter. Not even the heartbreak.

I took the elevator to the second floor to collect Zoe. Coincidentally, her private dining room was right next to theirs. As I helped her out, arms slung around her shoulders, the door across the hall opened.

Joe, the same Joe from the research team, stepped out.

His eyes met mine.

And in that single, suspended moment, I couldn’t tell if he was surprised… or if he had expected me all along.

It was Wednesday, and Grandma had invited all of us for dinner. Before the meal even began, Darius asked about my technology collaboration. For a few rare minutes, conversation flowed calmly, and a long-lost smile flickered across Grandma’s face. After dinner, Grandma instructed Linda to bring the bitter medicine I had to take daily. Just one sip made life feel unbearably sharp and hollow. Darius left the dining room for a phone call. I finished the medicine quietly. As I stepped out of the restaurant, the low hum of an engine reached me from outside.I frowned. “He left?”Grandma’s expression darkened. “Yes. In such a hurry… I have no idea where he’s rushing off to this time.”I didn’t respond. My gaze dropped to the floor. Deep down, I already knew the answer—he had probably gone to help Emma again. But… he had promised me he would talk tonight. About dissolving our bond. I waited, late into the night. The moon had drifted behind the mountain, and still, he hadn’t returned. The next

It was the weekend, and I was back at home—or rather, at Darius’s house—because I wanted to spend time with the children. After tucking them into bed, I walked into the study. The night pressed heavily against the windows. Darius sat at one end of the long table, hunched over files, the dim lamplight casting sharp shadows across his face.I inhaled slowly, forcing my voice to remain steady. “Do you have a minute? There’s something I need to ask you.”He looked up, expression unreadable. “About what?”“Gabriel.” The name caught in my throat for a moment, but I pushed on. “You said he lost contact on the Northern Front… what really happened? The communication algorithm he and I designed should have maintained the signal under any interference. How could it just… disappear?”At the mention of Gabriel, his gaze instantly hardened, a chill rolling off him like the night wind.“He’s my colleague, our Pack’s tactical consultant. Of course I’m worried,” I pressed. “He was left to protect the r

It was time for my follow-up appointment.I sank into the examination chair, the faint scent of herbs in the air doing little to calm my scattered thoughts. My head felt heavy, almost as if I’d been carrying the weight of a storm all night.Dr. Miles adjusted his glasses, his voice steady but gentle. “Rae, how have the medications been? Any improvement with sleep?”I lowered my eyes, words barely above a whisper. “A little… but my dreams are… intense. Every time I wake, it feels like I’ve just survived a war.”He scribbled a few lines in his notebook, eyes thoughtful. “Are the dreams still… about your former mate?”I nodded, not denying it. Darius lingered at the edges of every nightmare, the cold moonlight, the battlefield, his unyielding gaze. My voice trembled slightly. “Sometimes… I even dream he’s shifting. But the person next to him… isn’t me.”Dr. Miles was silent for a moment, then said softly, “During depression, the brain amplifies emotional memories. What you see isn’t neces

“We’re already planning to divorce. Please… mind your boundaries.”I signed the divorce agreement months ago.I had been clear. I didn’t want any property, wouldn’t fight for custody of Lyra, and only asked for a clean break. I thought he would treat it like any other business contract: swift, decisive, without emotion.Three months have passed. The agreement still sat on his desk.I couldn’t tell if he truly didn’t care—or if he was simply too stubborn to let go. I was about to speak, to ask him if he even intended to let me leave, when a knock sounded at the door.“Rae, I heard you were sick. Feeling any better?”It was Darius’s younger brother. Before I could answer, Darius’s calm, commanding voice cut in: “Come in.”The door wasn’t locked. He stepped inside, exuding that awkward, clumsy concern that only a young wolf could muster. “You look… better.”“Yes. A little,” I replied with a small smile. He scratched his head, muttering, “Serina told me you had a fever… so I came to check.

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   Chapter 86He Is Jealous

When I woke, the first thing I noticed was the flickering glow of the fire in the fireplace. The air smelled of burning herbs and wood, a warm, grounding scent that momentarily made me forget where I was. Until my eyes settled on him—Darius, sitting quietly by the bookshelf. He was reading, the soft firelight tracing the sharp lines of his face. My heart fluttered slightly, even though he wasn’t looking at me.“You’re awake,” he said finally, setting the book aside, his voice low and calm.My throat was dry, and all I could manage was a faint, “Mhm.” My head still ached from the fever I’d endured the night before. Lucy hadn’t stirred, either, as if even she had been subdued by my illness. Werewolves had stronger constitutions than humans, but prolonged mental strain could still take its toll.Just as I began to push back the covers, he stood and handed me a cup of warm water. I hesitated, then took it silent. His hand hovered near my forehead, a gesture of instinctive concern—but I lea

  • Too Late, Alpha — She’s a Queen Now   Chapter 85Gabriel’s Bad News

Snow fell slowly that night, drifting like a silver veil the Moon Goddess had cast over the wilderness. The streets were quiet, muffled by the powdery blanket, and even the city lights seemed dimmer under the cold sky.Joe and I left the headquarters together, and his frustration was palpable. “Did you see that group? Especially the woman hovering behind Emma—the way she looked at you, I almost thought she was going to leap at you.”I smiled faintly, the corners of my lips curling like the wind. “She’s Emma’s cousin.”Joe raised an eyebrow, letting out a low, wolfish growl. “Her cousin? So, is Alpha Darius just going to let the whole family march in? At this rate, the company might as well rename itself ‘Darius-Emma & Co.’”I didn’t respond. Quietly, I hummed an “Mhm,” eyes fixed on the snowy street outside. In werewolf society, a “company” is a mere human-world facade. The tech division is just a subsidiary; Darius’s true power flows through Pack funds and the influence he wields over
