Iris's POV

Eric started glaring at me again. Anytime I came around while he was with Evie, it was like I had committed a crime by just existing.

I knew that he was basically counting down the days he had to put up with me and Evie.

He never said it in front of Evie, but the moment we were alone, he made sure he never let me forget.

“I’m only playing along for a little while,” he said one afternoon as we stood by the car. “Just a few more days, I. Then I’ll be free of you and your games. For good.”

I clenched my jaw but didn’t respond. There was no point.

Later that week, the pack held a full moon celebration. Evie had been begging to go for days, and surprisingly, Eric agreed to take her.

I didn’t want to go, but Evie insisted.

So I dressed quietly and got into the backseat beside my daughter, while Eric drove in silence. Evie chatted the entire way, completely oblivious to the tension in the car.

Immediately we arrived, Eric excused himself to greet the pack members, leaving us by ourselves.

Evie clutched my hand tightly, looking around with a grin. “Can I go get juice, Mommy?”

I nodded. “Just stay where I can see you.”

Evie's grin widened, and she ran off..

“Still tagging along like an unwanted puppy, huh?” A taunting voice murmured from behind me. It was Zara. “I would’ve thought you would know when to leave the picture.”

I didn’t look at her. “I’m here for Evie. I don’t want trouble.”

Zara smirked. “Oh, come on, I. I'm not a troublemaker. I just want to chat.”

I ignored her, choosing instead to focus on Evie who had already gotten her juice.

“Tell me, how does it feel to be treated with disgust by your own mate?” Zara sneered.

I froze.

That was when Tiffany stepped forward with an identical sneer on her face, looking just like her mother. “You don’t look anything like the mate of an alpha. You look like his maid.”

I swallowed my pride and turned to walk away. I really didn’t have the energy for a confrontation, but Evie had already returned, and she had heard everything.

“Shut up,” Evie said quietly, standing in front of me. “Don’t talk about my mother that way.”

Zara raised a brow. “Sweetheart, you should learn to stay in your place as a child—”

“No,” Evie snapped. “You’re mean. And your daughter is mean too.”

Tiffany gasped. “At least I have someone who wants me! Your own father doesn’t want you!”

I stepped forward quickly. “Enough. That’s enough.”

Evie flinched like Tiffany had slapped her.

I glared at Zara. “Stop it. Teach your daughter to be a better person.”

Then I took Evie’s hands and walked away.

I tried to cheer Evie up, “Don’t listen to her, Evie. That’s not true, your father wants you.”

Evie’s lips trembled and tears welled up in her eyes. “Then why is he barely around?”

I cleared my throat as tears also welled up in my eyes. “He is very busy, Evie. He’s the Alpha of this pack. Didn’t you notice that he’s been spending time with you a lot lately? He has just been busy, that’s all.”

Before I could say anymore, Eric showed up with Zara and Tiffany beside him.

Tiffany’s cheeks were wet with tears as she held Eric’s hand.

“She said I’m not loved because I don’t have a real dad,” she cried. “She called me unwanted and said my mommy was chasing someone else’s mate.”

Zara sniffed beside her, pretending to be heartbroken.

Eric’s eyes darkened as he looked at Evie. “Is that true?”

Evie opened her mouth, her eyes wide in disbelief. “No, I didn’t—she started—”

“Apologize,” Eric snapped.

Evie’s lip quivered, but she shook her head. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Eric looked at me. “You’ve spoiled her. She’s just like you. Always playing the victim, and being manipulative.”

I stepped forward quickly. “Eric, don’t talk about her like that. She did nothing wrong. They insulted us.”

Eric glared at me fiercely, then he turned to Zara and Tiffany with a soft gaze. “Please excuse us. We need to talk alone.”

Zara gave a pitiful nod as she took Tiffany away. Just as Eric turned his back, they both smirked at me and Evie from over his shoulder.

I clenched my jaw. I then turned to Evie with a warm, reassuring smile. “Baby, wait for me here alright. Your daddy and I need to talk.”

I followed Eric out of the party, and towards the side of the building. From his clenched fists, I knew that whatever he was going to say was going to hurt.

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 258

Rowan’s POVThe guards dragged Cole down to the palace dungeons. I followed close behind with my hands clenched into fists. Shane, Marcus, and Derek came with me. King Silas had ordered a healer to wait outside in case things went too far.The dungeon was cold and wet. Water dripped from the walls. The smell of rot and blood filled the air. Perfect. They threw Cole into a cell and chained his wrists to hooks that were hanging from the ceiling. His arms were stretched above his head, and his feet were barely touching the ground.“Please,” Cole begged, his voice shaking. “I already told you everything I saw. I don’t know anything else.”“You’re lying,” I said, walking slowly toward him. “And I’m going to prove it.”I started simple. A punch to his stomach. It was not hard enough to break anything, but it was just enough to hurt.Cole gasped as the air was knocked out of his lungs.“Who took her?” I demanded.“I don’t know!” Cole wheezed. “I swear I don’t know!”My wolf growled in my hea

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 257

Rowan's POV I reached the tunnel entrance and searched for the hidden trigger to open it from the outside. It took me a few minutes, but I finally found the switch and the wall opened up again.I climbed back into the tunnel and started running back toward the palace.“Hold on, Iris,” I muttered as I ran. “Just hold on a little longer. I’m coming for you. I swear I’m coming for you.”The tunnel seemed even longer on the way back. Every second felt like an eternity. But in reality, it took a much shorter time as this time, I didn’t hesitate. I followed my own scent straight back the way I had come. Finally, I reached the opening back into the palace restroom.I climbed up the ladder quickly and pulled myself through the trap door.Shane was still there, along with several of the King’s guards. They all turned toward me immediately when I emerged.“Alpha Rowan!” Shane said, rushing over. “Did you find anything?”“She was taken through the tunnels,” I said quickly. “They crossed a lake.

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 256

Rowan’s POVMy elbow hit something as I pulled back from the wall, and suddenly I heard a soft click. The tiny hole of light expanded as the wall began to open up.I stepped through quickly before it could close again.Fresh air hit me immediately. I was outside now, standing in a dense forest. The moon provided enough light for me to see clearly.Behind me, the opening began to close quietly. Within seconds, the exit narrowed until it was completely invisible.I spun around, using all my enhanced senses to search for any sign of Iris or her kidnapper. But there was nothing. There was no scent. No footprints near the tunnel exit. No disturbed vegetation, nothing. It was like no one had passed through here at all.I ran a hand through my hair in frustration. What if I was wrong? What if this tunnel was just some random ancient passage that had nothing to do with Iris’s kidnapping? What if Cole’s story was actually true and I had wasted precious time chasing nothing?I gritted my teeth,

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 255

Rowan’s POVI moved through the tunnel with speed. My enhanced vision made it easy for me to see in the darkness as I navigated the passageways. Every few minutes, I hit another dead end, forcing me to backtrack and try a different route. The frustration was eating me up. There was no scent to follow. Just stale air.Doubt crept into my mind. What if this was another trick? What if Cole had been right after all, and I was wasting precious time down here while Iris was being taken in the opposite direction? No. I shook my head violently, forcing the doubt away. My instincts had never been wrong in all my years as Alpha. Cole had been lying. His story hadn’t added up, his injuries looked staged, and he seemed shifty to me.Which meant I knew exactly who to interrogate next once I got back to the palace.Though doing that might be difficult. Cole was a member of the royal staff, trusted by the King. I couldn’t just accuse him without evidence. I needed to be smart about this.My mind rac

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 254

Iris’s POVI lost track of how long I hung limply over Maximus’s shoulder like a sack. The paralysis was so unbearable. My body was completely unresponsive from the neck down, but I could still feel everything—the uncomfortable pressure on my stomach from being carried this way, and the slight movement of my baby inside me.My baby. The thought made fresh tears fall down my eyes.I had to find a way to leave some kind of trail for Rowan to follow. But how? I couldn’t move. I couldn’t speak properly. I was completely helpless.Time seemed to lose meaning in the dark tunnel. I had no idea how long we had been walking. Twenty minutes? An hour? No idea. Then suddenly, I began to feel a tiny tingling sensation in my fingertips. The paralysis was starting to wear off slightly, just enough that I could feel my fingers again.Hope sparked in my chest. If I could move my fingers, maybe I could do something.I tried wiggling them experimentally. They moved, but just slightly. What could I do? W

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted   Chapter 253

Rowan’s POV“While injured?” I pressed. “With possible broken ribs, you followed them?”“I had to try to save Luna Iris,” Cole insisted, his voice rising defensively. “I couldn’t just let him take her!”“That’s very brave,” Marcus said, but I could hear the doubt in his voice now too.“The east wing,” I said, testing him. “You’re sure it was the east wing?”“Yes, absolutely,” Cole said firmly. “I saw them heading that way with my own eyes.”But his eyes flickered slightly when he said it. He was lying.“What time did you see this?” Shane asked.“I… I don’t know exactly,” Cole stammered. “Maybe ten, fifteen minutes ago?”“Fifteen minutes ago, we had already sealed the palace,” Derek countered. “All the guards were already at their posts. How did no one else see this man carrying an unconscious woman?”“It was chaos,” Cole said quickly. “Everyone was running around searching. He must have slipped through.”The King’s guards were buying it. I could see them nodding, already convinced by
