Iris's POV

Eric started glaring at her again. Anytime Iris came around while he was with Evie, it was like she had committed a crime by just existing.

Iris knew that he was basically counting down the days he had to put up with her and Evie.

He never said it in front of Evie, but the moment they were alone, he made sure he never let her forget.

“I’m only playing along for a little while,” he said one afternoon as they stood by the car. “Just a few more days, Iris. Then I’ll be free of you and your games. For good.”

Iris clenched her jaw but she didn’t respond. There was no point.

Later that week, the pack held a full moon celebration. Evie had been begging to go for days, and surprisingly, Eric agreed to take her.

Iris didn’t want to go, but Evie insisted.

So she dressed quietly and got into the backseat beside her daughter, while Eric drove in silence. Evie chatted the entire way, completely oblivious to the tension in the car.

Immediately they arrived, Eric excused himself to greet the pack members, leaving them by themselves.

Evie clutched Iris’s hand tightly, looking around with a grin. “Can I go get juice, Mommy?”

Iris nodded. “Just stay where I can see you.”

Evie's grin widened, and she ran off..

“Still tagging along like an unwanted puppy, huh?” A taunting voice murmured from behind her. It was Zara. “I would’ve thought you would know when to leave the picture.”

Iris didn’t look at her. “I’m here for Evie. I don’t want trouble.”

Zara smirked. “Oh, come on, Iris. I'm not a troublemaker. I just want to chat.”

Iris ignored her, choosing instead to focus on Evie who had already gotten her juice.

“Tell me, how does it feel to be treated with disgust by your own mate?” Zara sneered.

Iris froze.

That was when Tiffany stepped forward with an identical sneer on her face, looking just like her mother. “You don’t look anything like the mate of an alpha. You look like his maid.”

Iris swallowed her pride and turned to walk away. She really didn’t have the energy for a confrontation, but Evie had already returned, and she had heard everything.

“Shut up,” Evie said quietly, standing in front of her mother. “Don’t talk about my mother that way.”

Zara raised a brow. “Sweetheart, you should learn to stay in your place as a child—”

“No,” Evie snapped. “You’re mean. And your daughter is mean too.”

Tiffany gasped. “At least I have someone who wants me! Your own father doesn’t want you!”

Iris stepped forward quickly. “Enough. That’s enough.”

Evie flinched like Tiffany had slapped her.

Iris glared at Zara. “Stop it. Teach your daughter to be a better person.”

Then she took Evie’s hands and walked away.

She tried to cheer Evie up, “Don’t listen to her, Evie. That’s not true, your father wants you.”

Evie’s lips trembled and tears welled up in her eyes. “Then why is he barely around?”

Iris cleared her throat as tears also welled up in her eyes. “He is very busy, Evie. He’s the Alpha of this pack. Didn’t you notice that he’s been spending time with you a lot lately? He has just been busy, that’s all.”

Before she could say anymore, Eric showed up with Zara and Tiffany beside him.

Tiffany’s cheeks were wet with tears as she held Eric’s hand.

“She said I’m not loved because I don’t have a real dad,” she cried. “She called me unwanted and said my mommy was chasing someone else’s mate.”

Zara sniffed beside her, pretending to be heartbroken.

Eric’s eyes darkened as he looked at Evie. “Is that true?”

Evie opened her mouth, her eyes wide in disbelief.. “No, I didn’t—she started—”

“Apologize,” Eric snapped.

Evie’s lip quivered, but she shook her head. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Eric looked at Iris. “You’ve spoiled her. She’s just like you. Always playing the victim, and being manipulative.”

Iris stepped forward quickly. “Eric, don’t talk about her like that. She did nothing wrong. They insulted us.”

Eric glared at Iris fiercely, then he turned to Zara and Tiffany with a soft gaze. “Please excuse us. I need to talk to Iris alone.”

Zara gave a pitiful nod as she took Tiffany away. Just as Eric turned his back, they both smirked at Iris and Evie from over his shoulder.

Iris clenched her jaw. She then turned to Evie with a warm, reassuring smile. “Baby, wait for me here alright. Your daddy and I need to talk.”

Iris followed Eric out of the party, and towards the side of the building. From his clenched fists, she knew that whatever he was going to say was going to hurt.

Iris’s POVMy throat went dry.The car had stopped by the edge of a small park. From the window, I could see the playground. My chest tightened like it was being squeezed.I almost told Jasmine to tell the driver to keep moving, but my eyes stayed glued to the children. My stomach twisted. Part of me wanted to look away, to pretend I hadn’t seen it. Another part of me didn’t want to leave.I had actually missed the sound of children laughing, that feeling as you held their small hands, and the way their eyes lit up with excitement at every small thing.“Iris?” Jasmine’s voice cut into my thoughts.I blinked and realized she and Shane were both looking at me curiously.“What?” I asked, trying to sound casual.“You’ve been staring,” Jasmine said, furrowing her eyebrows in concern. “Are you okay?”I hesitated. “Yeah. Fine.”But my voice wasn’t convincing, even to myself.Jasmine tilted her head, looking suspicious now. Shane just raised an eyebrow but didn’t push. Before I could stop mys

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 86

Iris's POVThe restaurant Jasmine dragged us to was already filled with people when we arrived. I instantly regretted leaving my room.Just as expected, immediately we walked in, heads turned, and eyes followed me, with whispers and murmurs in the air.But it didn't bother me as much. Maybe it was because I was actually getting used to it. Or maybe the stares weren’t as much as before. Or maybe it was both.Jasmine called a waiter, then she proceeded to order enough food to feed a small army.“Don’t worry,” she said sweetly once the waiter left, grinning at me. “You’ll thank me when the food comes.”I groaned. “You’ve been saying that all morning.”“And I’m right,” she replied easily. When the food arrived, I realized that she was probably right as I stared at the pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit, and more.My stomach betrayed me with a loud growl that made Shane choke on his water as he tried not to laugh.“Shut up,” I muttered, picking up a fork to start with the pancakes.“I

Iris's POVI didn’t know how I got back to my room. One moment I was leaning against Rowan’s wolf, the next I was waking up in my own bed. I had no memory of the walk back, or if Rowan had carried me, but I didn’t have the energy to think too hard about it.When I opened my eyes the next morning. I noticed immediately that I didn't feel heavy. I felt so much lighter than I had ever felt in weeks, and there was a strange warmth in my chest that made me feel like smiling. The ache from the training yesterday was almost gone. And my knuckles didn't hurt as much. I sat up slowly, rubbing my face. I slowly stretched, yawning.I glanced at the time. It was 8am already. I smiled in relief when I remembered that there was no training today.I felt so much at peace. However, that peace lasted for just three seconds. The door burst open.“Rise and shine, Iris!”I groaned loudly and flopped back down on my bed, pulling the blanket over my head.Of course. Jasmine. Her voice was bright and way t

Iris’s POVRowan didn’t move at first. He just stood in front of me with his arms crossed, and his jaw tight, like he was preparing himself for something big.His eyes narrowed slightly, and for a moment I thought he was going to lecture me again. My stomach sank, as I braced myself for it.But instead, he took a deep breath and began stretching.I frowned, looking at him with suspicion “What are you doing?”He didn’t answer. He just took a slow step back.I furrowed my brows. “Rowan?”“Whatever happens, I want you to remain calm.” He said calmly.I frowned. “I'm sorry, what?”Suddenly, it happened. His body shifted.I gasped, my whole body jerked back in shock. I almost slipped off the rock I was sitting on.His bones cracked, his body twisted, his clothes tore as his body grew. He released a growl that sent a shiver down my spine. It happened faster than I could process, and in the space of a second, Rowan wasn’t standing in front of me anymore. In his place was a massive and terrif

  • Too Late, Alpha: The Mate He Never Wanted    Chapter 83

Iris’s POVThe air shifted the moment I realized it was Rowan beside me.I froze mid-step, my chest tightened. My breath caught, but I forced myself to keep walking forward, keeping my eyes straight ahead. When had Rowan taken Shane’s place without me noticing? It was the first time I had been this close to him since the kiss incident two weeks ago.If Rowan was aware of that too, he didn’t show it. He walked steadily with an unreadable expression . He kept his gaze forward, as if there was nothing unusual between us.I told myself not to think about it. I was too tired and in pain, to let him take up space in my head. So I walked in silence. The silence wasn’t awkward or tense, though. It was somehow comfortable. For some reason, as we reached the door to my quarters, my heart started pounding.I stopped to open the door, and Rowan slowed down too. When I opened the door, I noticed Rowan moving to follow me in.I hesitated, glancing up at him. “Are you sure it’s… advisable for you to

Iris’s POVLucas’s eyes hardened. “No one cares how much you’re trying if there are no results because trying without results is the same as failing,” he said flatly.I clenched my fists tightly, ignoring the sharp pain that shot through my hand. His words stung because he was right. The rogues that attacked me that night hadn’t cared how hard I was trying to bring my wolf out. If Rowan hadn’t shown up, my effort wouldn’t have mattered, I would have been dead. It wouldn’t matter how much I tried if Chloe cornered me again.I looked down, swallowing hard, as my heart ached.Lucas studied me, and for a second I saw his expression shift. His jaw tightened, and his eyes flickered, like he noticed something on my face. But whatever he saw, he didn’t say anything about it.Instead, he stepped back. “Enough,” he said coldly. “That’s all for today.”I opened my mouth to protest, but I closed it. Part of me wanted to argue, to demand to keep going, but the truth was my body was shaking, and m
