Iris’s POV
“I’m done with this,” Eric said flatly. “I agreed to play nice for a month, but I’m already regretting every second.”
Iris clenched her fists and gritted her teeth. “She’s your daughter.”
“I never asked for her.” He spat
The words struck her like a slap, and Iris flinched.
Eric continued. “All these never meant anything. You’re not my mate and we’re not a family. You were a mistake I tolerated. The only reason I played along was because you told me that after a month you would sign the divorce papers, and I would never have to see your faces again.”
She hadn’t realized Evie was right behind them until she heard the soft gasp.
Eric turned too, and his face drained of color when he saw his daughter standing there, wide-eyed and frozen, like someone had just slapped her.
“Evie—” Iris stepped forward, but it was too late.
She turned and ran.
“Evie!” Iris shouted, chasing after her.
They both ran after her, but she didn’t get far, she collapsed by a bench, and began shaking.
“Evie?” Iris dropped to her knees beside her, but her daughter was unresponsive. She was having a seizure.
“She’s seizing,” Iris whispered in horror. “Oh God, she’s seizing—Eric!”
Eric stood frozen.
“Pick her up!” Iris screamed. “We have to take her to the clinic—NOW!”
He moved then, grabbed her and rushed to the car. Iris sat in the back with Evie pressed to her chest, whispering her name over and over, trying to keep her eyes open.
Then Eric’s phone rang as he started driving.
It was Zara.
He picked it. “I can’t talk right now” he mumbled quickly.
It was on loudspeaker, so Iris could hear as Zara frantically spoke to Eric. “Tiffany fell down the stairs at the party. She’s bleeding and she won’t stop screaming. We need you now!”
Eric groaned under his breath, then he slammed the brakes.
Iris gasped in horror in disbelief. “No—no, no, no, Eric, drive! Evie is not breathing properly—”
“I have to go back,” he muttered. “Tiffany is hurt.”
“Are you insane?! Evie is DYING!”
“She’s faking it,” he snapped, turning the car around. “Like her mother always does. She’s trying to manipulate me, just because I told her to apologize.”
“You bastard!” Iris screamed, sobbing. “She’s not pretending! She’s barely breathing! Eric, please—don’t do this. If you ever cared for her, even a little—”
“Get out.” He snapped.
“What—”
“I said GET OUT! Take your little drama somewhere else. Tiffany is hurt, and I don’t have time for this.”
Her mouth fell open in shock.
Eric pulled over and unlocked the doors.
Iris couldn’t believe it.
Evie stirred weakly in her arms.
“Mommy…” her voice was barely a whisper. She was turning blue.
“I’m here,” Iris cried. “I’ve got you, baby.”
Eric drove off, leaving Iris screaming and shrieking as she tried to chase after him with Evie in her arms.
A soft hand touched Iris’s cheek. Evie’s hand trembled as she touched her mother’s cheek.
“It’s okay, Mommy…”
“Yes baby, it’s okay. You’ll be fine.” Iris tried to assure her.
Evie shook her head slowly. “I know Daddy doesn’t love me,” she whispered. “Not like he loves Tiffany.”
Iris sobbed harder. “Don’t say that—please don’t—”
“It’s okay,” she said quietly and calmly, and Iris’s heart bled even more. “I just… I wanted it to be true.”
Iris held her tightly, trying to keep her warm.
“I know I’m sick, Mommy. I always knew. But I didn’t want to say anything because… because you would be sad. I just wanted to see you smile more.”
Tears poured down Iris’s face at Evie’s words.
Evie’s voice got weaker.
“You have to promise me something…”
“Anything, baby” Iris choked.
“Promise me that you’ll be happy, like you used to be. Even if it means leaving him and moving on to a better person who loves you.”
Iris nodded, sobbing. “I promise, baby. I promise.”
Evie gave a weak smile, looking so much more mature than seven years. “Good…”
Then her eyes closed, and her body went still.
Iris froze. “No… no, no, no—EVIE!” She screamed.
She shook her daughter, begged her to wake up, cried until her throat was raw, and her voice cracked.
She tried reaching Eric through their mate link, but he had blocked her.
Iris carried Evie’s body in her arms, walking all the way to the clinic, barefoot, and shaking.
When she got there, the healers came running.
They tried.
They tried everything, but it was too late.
Evie was gone.
Iris’s POVMy throat went dry.The car had stopped by the edge of a small park. From the window, I could see the playground. My chest tightened like it was being squeezed.I almost told Jasmine to tell the driver to keep moving, but my eyes stayed glued to the children. My stomach twisted. Part of me wanted to look away, to pretend I hadn’t seen it. Another part of me didn’t want to leave.I had actually missed the sound of children laughing, that feeling as you held their small hands, and the way their eyes lit up with excitement at every small thing.“Iris?” Jasmine’s voice cut into my thoughts.I blinked and realized she and Shane were both looking at me curiously.“What?” I asked, trying to sound casual.“You’ve been staring,” Jasmine said, furrowing her eyebrows in concern. “Are you okay?”I hesitated. “Yeah. Fine.”But my voice wasn’t convincing, even to myself.Jasmine tilted her head, looking suspicious now. Shane just raised an eyebrow but didn’t push. Before I could stop mys
Iris's POVThe restaurant Jasmine dragged us to was already filled with people when we arrived. I instantly regretted leaving my room.Just as expected, immediately we walked in, heads turned, and eyes followed me, with whispers and murmurs in the air.But it didn't bother me as much. Maybe it was because I was actually getting used to it. Or maybe the stares weren’t as much as before. Or maybe it was both.Jasmine called a waiter, then she proceeded to order enough food to feed a small army.“Don’t worry,” she said sweetly once the waiter left, grinning at me. “You’ll thank me when the food comes.”I groaned. “You’ve been saying that all morning.”“And I’m right,” she replied easily. When the food arrived, I realized that she was probably right as I stared at the pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit, and more.My stomach betrayed me with a loud growl that made Shane choke on his water as he tried not to laugh.“Shut up,” I muttered, picking up a fork to start with the pancakes.“I
Iris's POVI didn’t know how I got back to my room. One moment I was leaning against Rowan’s wolf, the next I was waking up in my own bed. I had no memory of the walk back, or if Rowan had carried me, but I didn’t have the energy to think too hard about it.When I opened my eyes the next morning. I noticed immediately that I didn't feel heavy. I felt so much lighter than I had ever felt in weeks, and there was a strange warmth in my chest that made me feel like smiling. The ache from the training yesterday was almost gone. And my knuckles didn't hurt as much. I sat up slowly, rubbing my face. I slowly stretched, yawning.I glanced at the time. It was 8am already. I smiled in relief when I remembered that there was no training today.I felt so much at peace. However, that peace lasted for just three seconds. The door burst open.“Rise and shine, Iris!”I groaned loudly and flopped back down on my bed, pulling the blanket over my head.Of course. Jasmine. Her voice was bright and way t
Iris’s POVRowan didn’t move at first. He just stood in front of me with his arms crossed, and his jaw tight, like he was preparing himself for something big.His eyes narrowed slightly, and for a moment I thought he was going to lecture me again. My stomach sank, as I braced myself for it.But instead, he took a deep breath and began stretching.I frowned, looking at him with suspicion “What are you doing?”He didn’t answer. He just took a slow step back.I furrowed my brows. “Rowan?”“Whatever happens, I want you to remain calm.” He said calmly.I frowned. “I'm sorry, what?”Suddenly, it happened. His body shifted.I gasped, my whole body jerked back in shock. I almost slipped off the rock I was sitting on.His bones cracked, his body twisted, his clothes tore as his body grew. He released a growl that sent a shiver down my spine. It happened faster than I could process, and in the space of a second, Rowan wasn’t standing in front of me anymore. In his place was a massive and terrif
Iris’s POVThe air shifted the moment I realized it was Rowan beside me.I froze mid-step, my chest tightened. My breath caught, but I forced myself to keep walking forward, keeping my eyes straight ahead. When had Rowan taken Shane’s place without me noticing? It was the first time I had been this close to him since the kiss incident two weeks ago.If Rowan was aware of that too, he didn’t show it. He walked steadily with an unreadable expression . He kept his gaze forward, as if there was nothing unusual between us.I told myself not to think about it. I was too tired and in pain, to let him take up space in my head. So I walked in silence. The silence wasn’t awkward or tense, though. It was somehow comfortable. For some reason, as we reached the door to my quarters, my heart started pounding.I stopped to open the door, and Rowan slowed down too. When I opened the door, I noticed Rowan moving to follow me in.I hesitated, glancing up at him. “Are you sure it’s… advisable for you to
Iris’s POVLucas’s eyes hardened. “No one cares how much you’re trying if there are no results because trying without results is the same as failing,” he said flatly.I clenched my fists tightly, ignoring the sharp pain that shot through my hand. His words stung because he was right. The rogues that attacked me that night hadn’t cared how hard I was trying to bring my wolf out. If Rowan hadn’t shown up, my effort wouldn’t have mattered, I would have been dead. It wouldn’t matter how much I tried if Chloe cornered me again.I looked down, swallowing hard, as my heart ached.Lucas studied me, and for a second I saw his expression shift. His jaw tightened, and his eyes flickered, like he noticed something on my face. But whatever he saw, he didn’t say anything about it.Instead, he stepped back. “Enough,” he said coldly. “That’s all for today.”I opened my mouth to protest, but I closed it. Part of me wanted to argue, to demand to keep going, but the truth was my body was shaking, and m
