Iris's POV

Without saying another word, I headed back to the car.

The car was heavy, filled with awkward silence from my outburst from before.

I stared at the window, chewing on the insides of my mouth. My reflection in the glass looked miserable, I felt miserable. Finally, I released a soft sigh.

“I’m sorry.”

I could see Jasmine and Shane looking at me from the reflection on the glass, but I didn’t turn my head, I just kept my eyes on the window. “I’m sorry for snapping like that. I shouldn’t have lost it.”

Jasmine was quiet for a moment. Then she sighed, “No. I’m sorry.”

That caught me off guard for a moment. I blinked and glanced at her. It was sarcastic or patronizing. She looked very sincere.

“I shouldn’t have pressed,” she continued softly. “If you didn’t want to talk about it, I should’ve respected that. I was just too curious, and that wasn’t fair.”

Her words hit me, and my chest tightened with guilt. “Still,” I muttered, “I didn’t have to bite your head off.”

Iris’s POVShane stayed silent, but to my relief, he still didn’t move.Chloe scoffed. “This is getting a little bit repetitive, don’t you think? Shane tilted his head, unfazed.Chloe glared at him. “Do I need to remind you again that I am not someone you want on your bad side? Do I need to remind you again to know your place?”Shane’s voice was steady when he finally spoke. “I’m simply following the Alpha’s orders. My job is to protect her from any harm or threat. That includes you.”Chloe’s nostrils flared. “I am the future Luna. You dare stand against me?”He gave a small shrug, completely unfazed. “I don’t take orders from ‘future’ anything. I obey the Alpha, the one who holds authority now, not the one you keep promising yourself you’ll become.”Her friends shifted behind her with outrage on their faces, but Shane didn’t blink.“Besides,” he added with a casual shrug, “you and I both know I’m already on your bad side. So what’s the point of your warning? I might as well do as I

Iris's POV“Well, hello there.”Chloe’s smug voice made my skin crawl.I froze in the hallway. Chloe stood with her friends behind her like her bodyguards. All of them had the same sneer on their faces, with folded arms like they had been waiting just for me.I groaned under my breath. Not now. My legs were already aching from walking all day, and the only thing I wanted was to collapse into bed. Dealing with Chloe was the last thing I had energy for.“Great,” I muttered. “Exactly what I needed to end the day.”Shane released a small sigh from beside me. “She really has the worst timing, doesn’t she?”Chloe smirked cruelly as she stepped closer. “I thought I smelled something pathetic in the air. Guess I was right.”I rolled my eyes, refusing to react. I had no strength to exchange words with Chloe. Maybe if I stayed silent, she would get bored and leave me.But just as I expected, Chloe wanted trouble. She tilted her head, her eyes glinting. “What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue? Or may

Iris’s POV“Who is Evie?” Jasmine’s voice was soft, and filled with curiosity. My chest squeezed tightly. But I kept my eyes on the kids, pretending I hadn’t heard her. Maybe if I ignored it, she would get the hint, and let it go.Unfortunately, she didn’t do that.“Iris,” Jasmine pressed again, “Who’s Evie?”The sound of that name on her lips felt like someone scratching their nails over a chalkboard. My throat tightened, and I cleared my throat.“I don’t want to talk about it,” I muttered quickly. She furrowed her eyebrows slowly. “I didn’t mean anything by it. I just—”“I said I don’t want to talk about it, alright?” My voice snapped out sharper than I had intended. It rang out sharply through the noise of the children playing. Some of them even turned to glance at me before going back to their games. Heat rushed into my face, and I exhaled sharply. The silence between us was heavy and tense.Jasmine opened her mouth like she wanted to say more, but she shut it again. Shane shifted

Iris’s POVMy throat went dry.The car had stopped by the edge of a small park. From the window, I could see the playground. My chest tightened like it was being squeezed.I almost told Jasmine to tell the driver to keep moving, but my eyes stayed glued to the children. My stomach twisted. Part of me wanted to look away, to pretend I hadn’t seen it. Another part of me didn’t want to leave.I had actually missed the sound of children laughing, that feeling as you held their small hands, and the way their eyes lit up with excitement at every small thing.“Iris?” Jasmine’s voice cut into my thoughts.I blinked and realized she and Shane were both looking at me curiously.“What?” I asked, trying to sound casual.“You’ve been staring,” Jasmine said, furrowing her eyebrows in concern. “Are you okay?”I hesitated. “Yeah. Fine.”But my voice wasn’t convincing, even to myself.Jasmine tilted her head, looking suspicious now. Shane just raised an eyebrow but didn’t push. Before I could stop mys

Iris's POVThe restaurant Jasmine dragged us to was already filled with people when we arrived. I instantly regretted leaving my room.Just as expected, immediately we walked in, heads turned, and eyes followed me, with whispers and murmurs in the air.But it didn't bother me as much. Maybe it was because I was actually getting used to it. Or maybe the stares weren’t as much as before. Or maybe it was both.Jasmine called a waiter, then she proceeded to order enough food to feed a small army.“Don’t worry,” she said sweetly once the waiter left, grinning at me. “You’ll thank me when the food comes.”I groaned. “You’ve been saying that all morning.”“And I’m right,” she replied easily. When the food arrived, I realized that she was probably right as I stared at the pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit, and more.My stomach betrayed me with a loud growl that made Shane choke on his water as he tried not to laugh.“Shut up,” I muttered, picking up a fork to start with the pancakes.“I
