Chapter 1

For a moment, Dante and I both froze, neither of us able to say a word.

It had been twenty-eight days since I finally understood exactly where my husband's heart lived—and it wasn't with us.

Every time he chose Bianca Conti and her son over Nico and me, I had our son call him "Don Amato."

I told myself it was so the two of us wouldn't waste one more tear on a man who didn't deserve them.

But Nico didn't see it that way.

He was only seven—the age when a boy still worships his father, still believes he can do no wrong.

Usually, the hesitation came first—a long pause, then the word would come out small and unsure.

But today, he said it on his own, without waiting for me.

Clean. Fluent.

Like he'd rehearsed it in his head a thousand times, just waiting for the moment he could finally say it without flinching.

Seeing us both frozen, Nico didn't wait for either of us to speak first. He reached out and took my hand himself.

"Don Amato, go handle your business." Then he turned to me and slipped his small hand into mine. "Come on, Mom. We're going to be late for our appointment."

The family portrait had been Dante's idea—his way of making up for the family dinner he'd missed.

Nico had circled today's date on the calendar two weeks in advance.

I followed my son out of the photo studio, my spine locked straight.

It all began with a receipt.

It was a bill from a yacht restaurant—three guests listed, one of them a child.

For his seventh birthday, all Nico had wished for was a family trip out on a yacht—fishing together, dinner on the water, watching the sunset.

Dante had called it a waste of time.

He'd stayed just long enough to have dinner with Nico at home, then left.

A few days later, he took Bianca and her son instead.

I found the photos on Bianca's social media page.

The caption read: [The best sunset should always be watched with the best father.]

The picture showed the three of them on the deck of the yacht, Dante and Bianca each with a hand on the boy between them.

Bianca was Dante's first love.

Years ago, when the Amato Family went to war with a rival house, Dante had her sent out of the city overnight to keep her safe.

By the time she came back, she was already a widow with a son of her own.

That night, we had the worst fight of our marriage. I told him I wanted a divorce, and that I was taking Nico with me.

Dante sighed and called me impossible.

He asked how I could bear to let our son grow up without a father in the house, and told me that Bianca's father had once saved his life—that it was a debt he had to repay.

I looked at Nico's face, gone pale with fear at the sound of us shouting, and I made a decision.

I knew that if I tore Nico away by force, he'd never be able to forget Dante.

But I also knew this wouldn't be a one-time thing.

I didn't want Nico or myself to suffer through it again and again, so I chose a quieter way—I tricked Dante into signing the divorce papers.

When I handed the signed agreement to my father's lawyer, he gave me a warning.

"Elena, when your father married you into the Amato Family, he invested a substantial amount of capital into the Amato family's business. Once your marriage is dissolved, you have the right to initiate a capital withdrawal—the funds are subject to a thirty-day settlement period. Are you certain you want to go through with this?"

I nodded. "I'm certain."

The lawyer started the settlement process.

I had thirty days. I started teaching Nico to call his father by a different name.

Today was day twenty-eight.

And for the first time, Nico had said "Don Amato" completely on his own, without any cue from me.

I could feel him trembling faintly against my side.

It didn't feel like a victory. It felt like a thousand needles finding my heart all at once.

We were halfway across the street when Dante finally snapped out of it.

He jogged a few steps after us, already opening his mouth to ask Nico what he'd meant.

But before he could get the question out, his phone rang.

Bianca again—that same practiced, breathless catch in her voice.

"Dante, where are you? Gabe won't stop crying—I can't soothe him."

Dante stopped walking.

He stood there staring at our backs, phone pressed to his ear, and said, "Okay. I understand. I'm on my way."

Then he texted me two words—talk later—before turning on his heel and walking away without looking back.

I heard the engine roar to life behind us.

I heard it pull away, farther and farther, until there was nothing left to hear.

Nico stopped, burying his face in my side until I felt his tears soak straight through my blouse.

"Mom." His voice was barely a whisper against my side. "Can we just not have a dad anymore?"

There was a time when it was Nico and me chasing after him. When would he come home? Could he spare even an hour for his son? Did we hold any place in his heart at all?Now it was reversed. He was the one chasing after us.But we didn't look back anymore. On holidays, I took Nico traveling. In winter, we went to see the snow in the Alps.In summer, we surfed the Mediterranean. On breaks, we toured old castles across Europe.Somehow Dante always got hold of our itinerary and quietly followed along. When we waited at the airport, he'd be sitting not far off. When we ate breakfast at the hotel, he'd be watching from two tables away. When Nico went skiing, he trailed behind at a distance, terrified the boy would fall. One time, Nico really did fall.Dante practically sprinted across the snow to reach him.But Nico had already scrambled up on his own, brushing the snow off his coat."I don't need help, Don Amato."Dante's outstretched hand froze in midair. In the end, he could only speak qu

  • Too Late, Don Amato   Chapter 10

In all our years of marriage, he had always been the untouchable Don—proud, unbending, towering above everyone. It was the first time I had ever seen him like this: shattered, desperate, stripped down to nothing. But the second Nico's name slipped past his lips, every trace of pity inside me died, and my gaze turned to ice."You're only thinking of Nico now?"Dante opened his mouth. Nothing came out.Soft footsteps sounded behind me.Nico had followed me out.He looked at Dante begging so desperately, his face very quiet.Dante seized on him like a drowning man grasping at straws, waving frantically through the gate."Nico.""Dad's here.""Talk to your mom for me, please?""Dad doesn't want to be apart from her."He thought Nico would relent. After all, Nico used to cling to him more than anyone. The moment he came home, Nico would run and wrap himself around his leg, calling "Dad" over and over. But this time, Nico only stepped half a step back, closer to me.Then he spoke calmly."Do

The words drove into Dante's chest like a blade. He stared at the screen, motionless, for a long moment.Bianca was still laughing."So you really didn't know.""Dante, you're pathetic.""Your wife and son don't want you anymore, and here you are, playing daddy to someone else's kid like a fool."Dante turned abruptly and started for the door.Bianca called after him."Where are you going?"Dante didn't look back.Bianca's voice went sharp."You think if you go running after her now, she'll just forgive you?""She stopped wanting you a long time ago!"Dante's footsteps faltered.Only for a second. Then he strode toward the exit even faster.Bianca snatched the water glass from the bedside table in a blind rage and hurled it after him.It shattered violently against the doorframe. In that same instant, Gabe began convulsing on the bed.His face turned from pale to blue, and the heart monitor shrieked into alarm.A nurse rushed to his side."Severe drug toxicity! Dante shot to his feet.Even hating Bianca as much as he did in that moment, the thought of a child in danger dragged him out the door on pure reflex. In the hospital room, Bianca sat keeping vigil at the bedside.Gabe's small body was sunken into the mattress, his face bloodless, ghost-white.The oxygen mask fogged with every weak, ragged breath. An IV line was taped to the back of his hand. The heart monitor emitted a sharp, urgent rhythm of beeps. The doctor had just given him an emergency injection, but he was still trembling, limp and frail.Dante had his hand on the door when Gabe's voice drifted through from inside."Mommy, I did what you said. I swallowed it...""Will Uncle Dante come sit with me now?"Dante's hand froze on the cold metal handle.Bianca lowered her voice, a trace of twisted satisfaction in her tone."He will.""Dante can never say no to us.""As long as you're suffering like this, as long as you cry, he'll come running."Gabe gasped for air, his voice thick wit

Around nine that night, Dante arrived home.As he unlocked the door, he was still clinging to one last shred of hope.Maybe Elena had just taken Nico to a friend's house.Maybe she was only giving him the silent treatment.Maybe...But the instant the door swung open, that final illusion shattered. The entryway was empty. The shoe cabinet, once crowded with Elena's and Nico's shoes, now held only his own.The living room was stripped bare. The oversized wedding portrait on the wall was gone. The photo of the three of them at the beach was gone. The three matching mugs on the coffee table were gone.Dante walked into the master bedroom and yanked open the wardrobe.Every single hanger of Elena's clothes had vanished. The vanity was wiped bare—she hadn't left behind a single bottle of anything. He rushed into Nico's room next.Nico's small bed was made, neat and immaculate. His backpack was gone. His toys were gone.Even the crayon drawing Nico had taped up himself—"Our Family Trip to th

Dante drove toward the amusement park.If he could just drive fast enough and get there on time, maybe he could make up for everything he'd cost them. But the road was jammed solid, traffic stretching as far as he could see.He called Elena again and again. No one picked up.Assuming she was still angry, he started texting instead.[Elena, Gabe's fine. I'm on my way to the park right now.][Don't leave. I'll be there soon.][I'm not breaking my promise. I'm really coming.]He sent message after message. None of them got a reply. He called Nico too. Nico's phone was off.Elena had never once left his texts unanswered before.Nico's phone had never once been turned off. This was the first time.Dante's pulse quickened, a bad feeling spreading through him.He suddenly thought of what Elena had said yesterday."We're going somewhere far."At the time, he'd assumed she only meant a trip with Nico.Thinking back on it now, her voice had been too calm.Too calm for anger. It sounded more like
