“Ah, shit…”
Damon cursed under his breath as he stared at me in pure shock. I could only stare back at him in horror. His secretary was wrapped around him, her legs locked around his waist as they stood in the middle of his office.
Just thirty minutes ago, he had texted me. “I have to work late at the office tonight. I won’t be coming home.” For the past two weeks, this had become his routine. Some nights he would come home, while on others he wouldn’t. I had tried not to think much of it, convincing myself that he was simply busy with work. But when our maid quietly mentioned that he had become distant lately, I couldn’t ignore the uneasy feeling in my heart anymore. I had come to the office hoping to surprise my husband. Instead, I had walked into my own nightmare. I couldn’t speak.
His secretary glanced at Damon before letting out a mocking laugh. “Well, she has finally seen us. Go on, Damon. Tell her the truth.” Without the slightest hint of shame, they slowly separated. Damon calmly adjusted his shirt before sitting comfortably in his office chair as though nothing inappropriate had happened. The secretary smiled triumphantly and settled herself on his lap, wrapping an arm possessively around his neck. The strength instantly left my legs. My heels gave way beneath me, and I collapsed onto the cold floor, unable to believe what I had just witnessed.
“Junia, don’t be so dramatic,” Damon said with an annoyed sigh, as though I were the one causing a scene. “I’ve actually been trying to find the courage to tell you something.” My lips trembled. “I… I want a divorce.” “D-Divorce?” I whispered, my voice breaking as tears blurred my vision. “Yes. You heard me.” His expression remained cold and indifferent. “We’ve been married for seven years, Junia. We have nothing holding us together anymore. No children. No excitement. All you ever do is work.
There’s no love left between us.” A bitter laugh escaped my lips. “Work?” I repeated softly. “Damon… I’ve spent seven years building this company beside you. I sacrificed everything for us. I walked away from my family, gave up my inheritance, and abandoned everyone who loved me just because I chose you.” The words echoed inside my mind. I chose you over everything. I wanted to tell him the truth about why we didn’t have children, but before I could say another word, he cut me off.
“Did I ask you to?” he snapped. “Did I ever ask you to sacrifice anything for me?” The question struck harder than any slap. “And since you can’t give me a child, Ann already has.” He turned toward his secretary with a proud smile. “She’s pregnant.” Pregnant? The single word echoed inside my head. Years ago, I had secretly discovered that Damon was infertile. I had buried the truth to protect his pride, silently enduring every insult from him and his family whenever they blamed me for our childless marriage. I had protected him. Yet here he was… Destroying me.
Damon gently held Ann’s hand before smiling at her with a warmth I hadn’t seen in years. “Thank you for coming back into my life,” he murmured. “Thank you for loving me again.” Back? They knew each other before? Ann smirked as she walked toward me, stopping just inches away while I remained kneeling on the floor. “You really are foolish, Junia.” She laughed. “You hired me yourself. Instead of giving me a job, you brought us back together. We’ve been lovers right under your nose.” She crouched in front of me, her smile growing even wider. “So every time he told you he was working late…” she whispered, “…he was with me.” My breathing became uneven.
“The baby I’m carrying is something you could never give him.” She placed a hand over her stomach before chuckling. “Oh… and remember all those expensive shoes, handbags, jewelry, and clothes he told you he was buying for his friend’s wife? They were never for someone else.” She leaned closer.
“They were all for me.” The room spun around me. Every receipt… Every lie… Every late night… Every broken promise… I couldn’t even remember the last time Damon had bought me anything. I had spent years thinking about him, supporting him, believing in him while he was secretly building another relationship behind my back. How could I have been so blind?
Neither of them looked guilty. Instead, Damon casually pulled a folder from his desk and tossed it at me. The divorce papers struck my face before sliding onto the floor. Without another glance, he intertwined his fingers with Ann’s and walked out of the office laughing together, stepping around me as if I were nothing more than a piece of discarded furniture. I swallowed the painful lump lodged in my throat. I should have listened to my parents. I should have… Slowly, I forced myself to my feet with what little dignity I had left.
My hands trembled as I picked up the papers, signed my name, and walked out without looking back. I didn’t go home. Instead, I wandered into the nearest bar. I had never touched alcohol before, but the pain clawing at my chest was unbearable. I ordered two shots and drank them one after another, hoping the burning liquid would numb the ache inside me. It didn’t. The images of Damon and Ann kept replaying in my mind over and over again until I finally broke down, burying my face in my hands as helpless sobs escaped my lips.
The chatter inside the bar gradually faded. People stopped what they were doing and turned to look at me, but I didn’t care. My world had already fallen apart. Unable to stay there any longer, I wiped my tears, booked a cab, and headed home. I only wanted to pack my belongings and leave that place forever.
But the moment the taxi stopped outside the gate, my heart shattered all over again. My luggage was already outside. Some suitcases had been neatly packed. Others had been ripped open, my clothes scattered across the wet ground as if they were nothing but garbage.I had taken longer than usual to return to the office because Lucas had insisted on driving me there. But I wasn’t going to let that happen. It would blow our cover far too quickly. When I arrived, everyone looked at me strangely. Was it because I was late? Or because I was still new and had already taken several days off? One thing about me, though, was that I cared very little about what people thought. Ignoring the curious stares, I quietly made my way to my office.I let out a slow sigh as I settled behind my desk. The stack of Sinclair Enterprises files waiting for me was enormous, so I began reviewing the company’s financial records one by one. The deeper I looked, the more shocked I became. Almost all the funding that had helped Damon expand his company had come from Sinclair Enterprises. How was that even possible? I was the one who had spent countless sleepless nights building Damon’s company, yet when I traced the financial records more carefully, I discovered that he had be
15“Lucas…”I looked at him as he gently pressed a warm towel against my forehead.“Hm?” he responded without looking up, his attention fixed on me.“I’m not feeling that bad,” I said softly. “Please, this really isn’t—”“Hey, Junia,” he interrupted politely. He finally looked at me, his expression calm but firm. “How am I supposed to explain to Mr. and Mrs. Larson that their daughter developed a high fever under my watch?” He paused before adding, “Besides, your hair is still cold and damp. Junia… please, let me bring your fever down.”I sighed, a small smile tugging at my lips. Apart from my parents, no one had ever taken care of me like this. No one. I had always been the one taking care of everyone else. Then my smile slowly faded as Maya crossed my mind. She had left the house because of me. She probably thought I didn’t care about her anymore. As though he had read my thoughts, Lucas spoke quietly. “Junia.”I looked up.“Maya will come around.” His voice remained steady. “You we
It’s a simple question, Maya,” Junia said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of anger. “Mrs. Carter was remarkably well-informed about our living arrangements tonight. Aside from the household staff, who answered directly to Lucas long before I arrived, you are the only person who roams this house freely at all hours.”I sighed. I knew nothing about this whole thing. I let out a small scoff. “Junia, how could you accuse me of that?” My voice trembled as I looked pleadingly toward Lucas. “I’m your cousin! I’ve done nothing but support you through your divorce! Lucas, you know me. I would never gossip about your private life to Damon’s family!”“She knew about our office interactions. She knew about our rooms.”“Stop, Junia,” I cut in. I had already noticed she no longer interacted with me the way she did when she first arrived. Maybe she didn’t need me anymore. “I won’t sit here and watch you tarnish my name in front of Lucas. He may be your husband, but he’s my boss too. I
The silence that followed the sharp crack of the slap was absolute. Mrs. Carter’s hand trembled against her swelling cheek, her mouth agape as she stared in total shock at Mrs. Sinclair. “Carol… you slapped me?” Mrs. Carter’s voice was barely a breath, choked with humiliation. “I should do far worse than slap you,” Mrs. Sinclair said, her posture rigid, her tone carrying a terrifying, frozen fury. “You locked a six-year-old child in an unlit, abandoned building in the dark. For what? To frame Junia? To feed your pathetic, bitter vendetta?” “I didn’t—the brat is lying! Junia must have told her to say that!” Mrs. Carter shrieked, backing away frantically. “Enough!” Lucas’s voice thundered through the grand hall, cutting through her frantic excuses like a gavel striking stone. He didn’t raise his hands, but his presence alone forced everyone in the room to take a step back. Standing right beside him, I could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest, his jaw set in a line of ir
"Did anyone check the estate security cameras?" I asked immediately, my mind racing as my administrative instincts kicked into high gear."Security is reviewing the main gates now, but the perimeter fence near the gardens has a blind spot," Lucas said, his eyes scanning the dark treeline surrounding the Sinclair property. "Leah is panicking inside. If Aria wandered off into the grounds..."He didn't need to finish the sentence. The Sinclair estate stretched across acres of unlit private woods, complete with a natural drainage pond at the edge of the property."She wouldn't wander off on her own during a family gathering," I said firmly, walking back toward the garden patio. "Aria was sitting right next to her mother. Someone had to have enticed her or taken her away from the dining hall."Without wasting another second, we hurried back inside. The living room had descended into complete chaos. Leah was kneeling on the floor, crying uncontrollably as one of Lucas’s sisters tried to com
11“Different bedrooms, Mrs. Carter?” I asked, my voice calm and completely unbothered. “I didn’t realize the layout of my husband’s home had become your concern. Then again, I suppose when your own family is falling apart, keeping track of mine is the only entertainment you have left.”Her face immediately darkened. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that, Junia!” she snapped. “You think wearing expensive clothes and clinging to Lucas Sinclair suddenly makes you royalty? I know exactly what you are—a manipulative little snake! You dragged my Damon through the mud, humiliated our family in front of the entire city, and for what? A fake marriage to a man who doesn’t even share a bed with you.”She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “I know everything,” she whispered with a smug smile. “I’ve been told how Lucas treats you at the office. Cold. Professional. Nothing more. You think you’ve won, but you’re nothing more than a pawn in his game. Once he’s done using you to destroy Damon, he’ll
