We sat on the nearest chairs in the hospital corridor. I looked at him for a moment before asking the question that had been bothering me ever since he showed up. “Are you following me?”

Lucas let out a light scoff before looking at me. “This is a public hospital, Mrs. Junia. Am I not allowed to come here for a checkup?” Well… he had a point. I lowered my head for a second before looking back at him. “Then why did you agree to my proposal?”

Instead of answering immediately, he slowly stood up from his chair and adjusted the sleeve of his suit. “The important thing is that I agreed, isn’t it? That’s what you wanted.” I quickly stood up as well, afraid he would change his mind if I delayed any longer. “Thank you,” I said sincerely. “I’ll see you around.”

He simply gave me a slight nod before walking away, leaving me standing there with more questions than answers. I watched him disappear down the hallway before letting out a long sigh. I didn’t understand that man at all, but none of that mattered right now. He had agreed to marry me, and that was all I needed.

I immediately booked a cab before calling Maya. “Girl, guess what?” I asked excitedly the moment she answered. “What happened?” “He agreed!” “Really?” For some reason, she didn’t sound as excited as I expected, but I was far too happy to notice. “I’ll call you later,” I said before hanging up.

The taxi had already stopped outside my parents’ mansion. For seven long years, I had stayed away from this place. The day I chose Damon over Lucas was the same day I walked away from my family. I had changed my phone number, cut off all contact with them, and convinced myself that I was doing the right thing. Or at least… that was what I had believed.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the gate and walked inside. The first person I saw was my mother watering the flowers in the garden. The moment she looked up and saw me standing there, I froze. I thought she would be angry. I thought she would tell me to leave or remind me that I had chosen a stranger over my own family.

Instead, she dropped the watering can and rushed toward me. “My daughter…” she cried as she pulled me into a tight embrace. “You finally came back. God has answered my prayers. I knew one day you would come home.” The warmth of her hug instantly broke me. I hugged her just as tightly, unable to stop the tears running down my face. “I’m sorry, Mom,” I sobbed. “I shouldn’t have gone against you back then. I should have listened.”

She gently rubbed my back, trying to comfort me. “It’s okay. We forgave you a long time ago.” I slowly pulled away and looked at her with tear-filled eyes. “You… forgave me?” She smiled sadly. “Of course we did. Bring the man you chose if that’s what makes you happy. It’s okay. What hurt your father and me wasn’t your decision to marry him. It was the fact that you cut ties with us completely. You changed your number, disappeared without a word, and never gave us a chance to know whether you were alive or not. I searched for you everywhere until I finally gave up, hoping and praying that one day you would come back to us.”

Fresh tears rolled down my cheeks as I hugged her again. “I’m sorry, Mom. I was gone for so many years because I thought you would never want to see me again.” “At first, your father and I were angry,” she admitted softly. “But eventually we let it go. You’re our only daughter. This will always be your home.”

I looked around the garden before asking quietly, “Where’s Dad?” “He’s at the company,” she replied. I lowered my eyes. “Mom… the man I chose betrayed me.” Her smile immediately disappeared. “For years I endured everything because I loved him, but I couldn’t come back. I kept thinking you would never forgive me.”

“Oh, my poor girl,” she whispered as she held my hands. “You could have come home at any time. You’re the only daughter we have. Everything here has always belonged to you.” I wiped away my tears before forcing a small smile. “And, Mom… I agreed to marry that man.” She looked at me in confusion. “It’s okay, dear. It’s all in the past now.”

I shook my head. “No, Mom. Lucas agreed too.” Her eyes widened in surprise. “Really?” I nodded with a smile. “I finally realized that your decision was what was best for me.”

She smiled through her tears before pulling me into another hug. “Do you want me to do anything about that man?” I smiled. “No, Mum. I will definitely handle him at the right time.” She nodded.

I hadn’t returned because of the inheritance. I hadn’t come back because of the wealth either. I had returned because I finally understood that no matter how badly I had hurt my parents, they had never stopped loving me. Yet a man I left them for didn’t think twice before even betraying me.

The following morning, despite my mother’s insistence that I stay home and rest, I left early to meet Lucas again. We still needed to discuss the details of our arrangement before he had the chance to change his mind. When I arrived at Sinclair Group, I immediately noticed that Maya’s desk was empty. I frowned. Where had she gone?

Just as I was about to knock on Lucas’s office door, I heard voices coming from inside. “How could you choose her over me?” Maya demanded. I froze outside the door. “I stayed by your side after she refused to marry you. I thought maybe one day you would finally consider me.”

My heart skipped a beat. So Maya… She had been in love with Lucas all this time. Suddenly, all of her strange reactions over the past few days finally made sense. Before I could even process that revelation, she spoke again. “Does she even know that you’re Damon’s biological uncle?”

My eyes widened in complete shock. What? Lucas… was Damon’s uncle?

I had taken longer than usual to return to the office because Lucas had insisted on driving me there. But I wasn’t going to let that happen. It would blow our cover far too quickly. When I arrived, everyone looked at me strangely. Was it because I was late? Or because I was still new and had already taken several days off? One thing about me, though, was that I cared very little about what people thought. Ignoring the curious stares, I quietly made my way to my office.I let out a slow sigh as I settled behind my desk. The stack of Sinclair Enterprises files waiting for me was enormous, so I began reviewing the company’s financial records one by one. The deeper I looked, the more shocked I became. Almost all the funding that had helped Damon expand his company had come from Sinclair Enterprises. How was that even possible? I was the one who had spent countless sleepless nights building Damon’s company, yet when I traced the financial records more carefully, I discovered that he had be

15“Lucas…”I looked at him as he gently pressed a warm towel against my forehead.“Hm?” he responded without looking up, his attention fixed on me.“I’m not feeling that bad,” I said softly. “Please, this really isn’t—”“Hey, Junia,” he interrupted politely. He finally looked at me, his expression calm but firm. “How am I supposed to explain to Mr. and Mrs. Larson that their daughter developed a high fever under my watch?” He paused before adding, “Besides, your hair is still cold and damp. Junia… please, let me bring your fever down.”I sighed, a small smile tugging at my lips. Apart from my parents, no one had ever taken care of me like this. No one. I had always been the one taking care of everyone else. Then my smile slowly faded as Maya crossed my mind. She had left the house because of me. She probably thought I didn’t care about her anymore. As though he had read my thoughts, Lucas spoke quietly. “Junia.”I looked up.“Maya will come around.” His voice remained steady. “You we

It’s a simple question, Maya,” Junia said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of anger. “Mrs. Carter was remarkably well-informed about our living arrangements tonight. Aside from the household staff, who answered directly to Lucas long before I arrived, you are the only person who roams this house freely at all hours.”I sighed. I knew nothing about this whole thing. I let out a small scoff. “Junia, how could you accuse me of that?” My voice trembled as I looked pleadingly toward Lucas. “I’m your cousin! I’ve done nothing but support you through your divorce! Lucas, you know me. I would never gossip about your private life to Damon’s family!”“She knew about our office interactions. She knew about our rooms.”“Stop, Junia,” I cut in. I had already noticed she no longer interacted with me the way she did when she first arrived. Maybe she didn’t need me anymore. “I won’t sit here and watch you tarnish my name in front of Lucas. He may be your husband, but he’s my boss too. I

The silence that followed the sharp crack of the slap was absolute. Mrs. Carter’s hand trembled against her swelling cheek, her mouth agape as she stared in total shock at Mrs. Sinclair. “Carol… you slapped me?” Mrs. Carter’s voice was barely a breath, choked with humiliation. “I should do far worse than slap you,” Mrs. Sinclair said, her posture rigid, her tone carrying a terrifying, frozen fury. “You locked a six-year-old child in an unlit, abandoned building in the dark. For what? To frame Junia? To feed your pathetic, bitter vendetta?” “I didn’t—the brat is lying! Junia must have told her to say that!” Mrs. Carter shrieked, backing away frantically. “Enough!” Lucas’s voice thundered through the grand hall, cutting through her frantic excuses like a gavel striking stone. He didn’t raise his hands, but his presence alone forced everyone in the room to take a step back. Standing right beside him, I could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest, his jaw set in a line of ir

"Did anyone check the estate security cameras?" I asked immediately, my mind racing as my administrative instincts kicked into high gear."Security is reviewing the main gates now, but the perimeter fence near the gardens has a blind spot," Lucas said, his eyes scanning the dark treeline surrounding the Sinclair property. "Leah is panicking inside. If Aria wandered off into the grounds..."He didn't need to finish the sentence. The Sinclair estate stretched across acres of unlit private woods, complete with a natural drainage pond at the edge of the property."She wouldn't wander off on her own during a family gathering," I said firmly, walking back toward the garden patio. "Aria was sitting right next to her mother. Someone had to have enticed her or taken her away from the dining hall."Without wasting another second, we hurried back inside. The living room had descended into complete chaos. Leah was kneeling on the floor, crying uncontrollably as one of Lucas’s sisters tried to com

11“Different bedrooms, Mrs. Carter?” I asked, my voice calm and completely unbothered. “I didn’t realize the layout of my husband’s home had become your concern. Then again, I suppose when your own family is falling apart, keeping track of mine is the only entertainment you have left.”Her face immediately darkened. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that, Junia!” she snapped. “You think wearing expensive clothes and clinging to Lucas Sinclair suddenly makes you royalty? I know exactly what you are—a manipulative little snake! You dragged my Damon through the mud, humiliated our family in front of the entire city, and for what? A fake marriage to a man who doesn’t even share a bed with you.”She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “I know everything,” she whispered with a smug smile. “I’ve been told how Lucas treats you at the office. Cold. Professional. Nothing more. You think you’ve won, but you’re nothing more than a pawn in his game. Once he’s done using you to destroy Damon, he’ll
