Lucas’s deep voice broke the quiet inside the car. He was watching me from the opposite side of the leather seat, one leg crossed over the other and his hand resting casually on his knee. His dark eyes held that same intensity they always did, making me feel as though he could somehow read every thought running through my mind. “I’m just getting started,” I said softly, turning to face him. “A little public embarrassment doesn’t repay seven years of betrayal, Lucas.” A faint smile touched the corner of his lips. “Good, because if you were soft-hearted enough to start pitying him back there, this contract would have been a waste of my time.” I sighed as I looked at him before remembering the sudden bleeding that had sent Ann collapsing to the floor. “The medical report I saw at the hospital… Ann tested positive for a severe infection. A pregnancy under those circumstances was already risky, especially considering how reckless she has been. But the way she collapsed tonight…” I narrowed my eyes thoughtfully. “She wasn’t only terrified because her lie about my parents had fallen apart. Part of me wanted to feel sorry for her, but after everything that woman had done to me, I couldn’t bring myself to. Lucas didn’t comment on it. Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek silver access card and a small black key fob, placing both on the leather console between us. “The primary penthouse at the Sinclair Estate,” Lucas explained calmly. “Your room has already been prepared according to the specifications you gave my secretary, and your belongings from your parents’ house have been delivered.” I picked up the keycard and stared at it for a moment. “Thank you.” Four months had already passed since Lucas and I secretly got married, but during that entire time, I had continued living at my parents’ house. There hadn’t been any reason for me to move in with him when hardly anyone even knew we were married. But after making our first public appearance as husband and wife tonight, things had changed. If we wanted people to believe our marriage was real, I couldn’t continue living separately from my husband. That didn’t mean anything between us had changed, though. We still had our agreement. Outside these walls, we would behave like a happily married couple, but behind closed doors, we would live separate lives while helping each other accomplish our individual goals. I knew exactly what I wanted from this marriage, but Lucas had never told me what he wanted in return. I had asked him before, but after receiving no proper answer, I eventually stopped asking. We barely spoke unless there was something important to discuss, but there was one thing I had already figured out about him. Whatever his reasons were, Lucas hated Damon even more than I did. When we finally reached the Sinclair Estate, I wasn’t surprised by its size. The place was enormous, exactly what I had expected from someone like Lucas. I sighed softly as the car stopped and Lucas stepped out first. When the door opened on my side, I moved to get out, only for him to place his hand against the edge of the car above my head. I paused for a second before realizing why. Earlier that evening, while getting into the car, I had accidentally hit my head against the frame. It hadn’t hurt much, and I had already forgotten about it, but apparently Lucas hadn’t. Maybe he wasn’t as heartless as he looked. I stepped out carefully, and Lucas removed his hand without saying anything. The moment we entered the house, several maids came forward to welcome me. I acknowledged them politely before glancing around. Everything surrounding me screamed wealth, from the expensive furniture to the enormous space, but none of it particularly startled me. I had grown up surrounded by wealth myself. “Let’s get you to your room,” Lucas said, and I followed him upstairs. We walked down the hallway until he stopped briefly beside one of the doors. “This is my room, in case you need anything.” I nodded, and we continued a little farther before he stopped in front of another door and opened it for me. “This one’s yours.” I stepped inside and looked around. The bedroom was much larger than I had expected, but despite its size, it somehow felt comfortable. My belongings had already been arranged neatly, just as Lucas had promised. “Thank you,” I said, turning toward him. “I’ll leave you to rest.” For a moment, neither of us said anything. I looked away, trying to hide my embarrassment, while Lucas stared at me before finally speaking. “Okay. You go first.” He was about to walk away when I suddenly remembered something. “And—” “And—” We both spoke at exactly the same time and immediately stopped. “The company—” “The company—” It happened again. I cleared my throat. “When am I going to start working?” “Oh.” He nodded slightly. “That’s actually what I wanted to ask you too. You can start whenever you’re ready.” Working at his company had been another part of our agreement. I wanted to rebuild everything I had lost after leaving Damon, and Lucas had agreed to let me work beside him. Before I could respond, there was a knock at the door. A maid appeared a moment later. “Sir, there’s someone downstairs asking to see both of you.”Lucas and I exchanged confused looks. Someone wanted to see both of us? For some reason, I immediately wondered if it was his mother. Without asking any more questions, Lucas headed downstairs, and I followed behind him. But the moment we reached the living room, I stopped. It wasn’t his mother—it was Maya, standing there with several suitcases beside her, smiling from ear to ear as I stared at her in confusion, wondering what the hell she was doing here.I had taken longer than usual to return to the office because Lucas had insisted on driving me there. But I wasn’t going to let that happen. It would blow our cover far too quickly. When I arrived, everyone looked at me strangely. Was it because I was late? Or because I was still new and had already taken several days off? One thing about me, though, was that I cared very little about what people thought. Ignoring the curious stares, I quietly made my way to my office.I let out a slow sigh as I settled behind my desk. The stack of Sinclair Enterprises files waiting for me was enormous, so I began reviewing the company’s financial records one by one. The deeper I looked, the more shocked I became. Almost all the funding that had helped Damon expand his company had come from Sinclair Enterprises. How was that even possible? I was the one who had spent countless sleepless nights building Damon’s company, yet when I traced the financial records more carefully, I discovered that he had be
15“Lucas…”I looked at him as he gently pressed a warm towel against my forehead.“Hm?” he responded without looking up, his attention fixed on me.“I’m not feeling that bad,” I said softly. “Please, this really isn’t—”“Hey, Junia,” he interrupted politely. He finally looked at me, his expression calm but firm. “How am I supposed to explain to Mr. and Mrs. Larson that their daughter developed a high fever under my watch?” He paused before adding, “Besides, your hair is still cold and damp. Junia… please, let me bring your fever down.”I sighed, a small smile tugging at my lips. Apart from my parents, no one had ever taken care of me like this. No one. I had always been the one taking care of everyone else. Then my smile slowly faded as Maya crossed my mind. She had left the house because of me. She probably thought I didn’t care about her anymore. As though he had read my thoughts, Lucas spoke quietly. “Junia.”I looked up.“Maya will come around.” His voice remained steady. “You we
It’s a simple question, Maya,” Junia said, her voice smooth, level, and entirely devoid of anger. “Mrs. Carter was remarkably well-informed about our living arrangements tonight. Aside from the household staff, who answered directly to Lucas long before I arrived, you are the only person who roams this house freely at all hours.”I sighed. I knew nothing about this whole thing. I let out a small scoff. “Junia, how could you accuse me of that?” My voice trembled as I looked pleadingly toward Lucas. “I’m your cousin! I’ve done nothing but support you through your divorce! Lucas, you know me. I would never gossip about your private life to Damon’s family!”“She knew about our office interactions. She knew about our rooms.”“Stop, Junia,” I cut in. I had already noticed she no longer interacted with me the way she did when she first arrived. Maybe she didn’t need me anymore. “I won’t sit here and watch you tarnish my name in front of Lucas. He may be your husband, but he’s my boss too. I
The silence that followed the sharp crack of the slap was absolute. Mrs. Carter’s hand trembled against her swelling cheek, her mouth agape as she stared in total shock at Mrs. Sinclair. “Carol… you slapped me?” Mrs. Carter’s voice was barely a breath, choked with humiliation. “I should do far worse than slap you,” Mrs. Sinclair said, her posture rigid, her tone carrying a terrifying, frozen fury. “You locked a six-year-old child in an unlit, abandoned building in the dark. For what? To frame Junia? To feed your pathetic, bitter vendetta?” “I didn’t—the brat is lying! Junia must have told her to say that!” Mrs. Carter shrieked, backing away frantically. “Enough!” Lucas’s voice thundered through the grand hall, cutting through her frantic excuses like a gavel striking stone. He didn’t raise his hands, but his presence alone forced everyone in the room to take a step back. Standing right beside him, I could feel the intense heat radiating from his chest, his jaw set in a line of ir
"Did anyone check the estate security cameras?" I asked immediately, my mind racing as my administrative instincts kicked into high gear."Security is reviewing the main gates now, but the perimeter fence near the gardens has a blind spot," Lucas said, his eyes scanning the dark treeline surrounding the Sinclair property. "Leah is panicking inside. If Aria wandered off into the grounds..."He didn't need to finish the sentence. The Sinclair estate stretched across acres of unlit private woods, complete with a natural drainage pond at the edge of the property."She wouldn't wander off on her own during a family gathering," I said firmly, walking back toward the garden patio. "Aria was sitting right next to her mother. Someone had to have enticed her or taken her away from the dining hall."Without wasting another second, we hurried back inside. The living room had descended into complete chaos. Leah was kneeling on the floor, crying uncontrollably as one of Lucas’s sisters tried to com
11“Different bedrooms, Mrs. Carter?” I asked, my voice calm and completely unbothered. “I didn’t realize the layout of my husband’s home had become your concern. Then again, I suppose when your own family is falling apart, keeping track of mine is the only entertainment you have left.”Her face immediately darkened. “Don’t you dare speak to me like that, Junia!” she snapped. “You think wearing expensive clothes and clinging to Lucas Sinclair suddenly makes you royalty? I know exactly what you are—a manipulative little snake! You dragged my Damon through the mud, humiliated our family in front of the entire city, and for what? A fake marriage to a man who doesn’t even share a bed with you.”She stepped closer, lowering her voice. “I know everything,” she whispered with a smug smile. “I’ve been told how Lucas treats you at the office. Cold. Professional. Nothing more. You think you’ve won, but you’re nothing more than a pawn in his game. Once he’s done using you to destroy Damon, he’ll
