Chapter 4

Author: Eirlys
The cellar was cold and damp.

I was still recovering, and the wound in my back was bleeding.

After only three hours, I lost consciousness and fell into a feverish delirium.

In the haze, I was fifteen again.

My parents were dead, and my relatives were circling like vultures, trying to carve up my inheritance.

Then Hudson, twenty-three at the time, appeared like a god.

He stood in front of me, his voice steady and strong. "Don't be afraid. I'll always protect you."

Burning with fever, I mumbled in my sleep, "Liar... you lied. You don't protect me anymore..."

A cool hand gently wiped the tears from my eyes.

Hearing my words, the hand froze.

A heavy, suppressed sigh echoed in the darkness, and then the sound of footsteps faded away.

Two days later, I woke up in my own bed.

The blood-stained dress was gone, replaced with something clean and comfortable.

The wound on my back had been stitched up again, with no sign it had ever been torn open.

【Don't be sad, Liriel! Hudson cares about you! He canceled a hundred-million-dollar arms deal to rush back and be with you!】

【He hired the best surgeon in New York to give you the finest cosmetic stitches so you won't have a scar!】

I looked at the glowing words, a ridiculous flicker of hope in my heart.

Was it really him?

Just then, I heard a car engine cut out downstairs.

I threw off the covers and, despite my weakness, went downstairs.

I had to see him. I had to ask him if he finally believed I hadn't sent those women after Bianca.

But as I reached the living room, I was met with a pair of dark, furious eyes.

Hudson strode toward me and grabbed my arm.

The force was enough to crush bone.

"Liriel, how far are you going to take this madness?!" he demanded through gritted teeth.

I was stunned. "What are you talking about?"

"Still playing dumb?" Hudson sneered. "Don't lie to me. Did you use my name to get Bianca fired from her internship? You had her publicly humiliated, she had a breakdown, and she fell down a flight of stairs!"

My face went pale. I shook my head.

"I didn't! I don't even know where she works!"

"Who else hates her enough to do something like this?!" Hudson wouldn't listen.

The injustice of it all ignited my anger.

I lifted my chin defiantly, meeting his mocking gaze.

"Hudson, you underestimate me," I said, trembling with rage, my nails digging into my palms until they bled. "If I really wanted her gone, I would have run her out of New York so she could never come back. You think I'd waste my time with these childish games?!"

The raw determination in my eyes made him hesitate for a second.

Just then, his phone rang.

It was a voice message from Bianca.

He played it in the silent living room.

Bianca's weak, pitiful voice filled the air:

"Hudson, don't blame Liriel... She's young, she doesn't know better. I was just a little scared, it's not a big deal. It's my fault, really. If I had just agreed to leave when Liriel first told me to, she wouldn't have resorted to such extreme measures. It's all my fault..."

Her words sealed my "guilt."

Hudson's face turned to ice.

He looked at me, his eyes filled with nothing but cold disappointment.

"Liriel, you've disappointed me more than I can say. You have no remorse."

He let go of my arm, his authority as the Don returning.

"Since you used the Volkov family's power to ruin Bianca's job, I'm taking away your power to be reckless."

He turned to face all the men in the hall, his lips parting to deliver a cold, hard sentence: "Put the word out. From this day on, Liriel has nothing to do with the Volkov Family."

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

"It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
