Chapter 5

Author: Eirlys
Those words shattered my heart.

Nothing to do with the Family...

The comments frantically tried to explain it away.

【Don't be sad, Liriel, this is all part of Hudson's plan!】

【He's doing this so he can marry you later without any baggage! Once he severs the adoption ties, no one can use your relationship against you! He's protecting you!】

Protecting me?

My heart was a cold, desolate wasteland.

They didn't understand. In the New York mafia, losing the protection of the Volkov Family meant one thing.

It meant I went from being a princess to a piece of meat for the wolves.

The trouble came fast.

The next day, I went to the cemetery to visit my parents' graves.

As I was leaving, several black SUVs surrounded me.

It was the other mafia daughters, the ones who were always jealous, the ones I'd clashed with before. They dragged me into a car and took me to a villa in the suburbs.

"Well, well, Liriel. Look how the mighty have fallen."

They sneered, grabbing my hair and shoving my head into the freezing outdoor pool, again and again.

Water filled my nose, my lungs.

The terror of drowning made me struggle wildly.

When they finally dragged me out, half-dead, someone threw my phone at my face.

"Here's your chance. Call your Uncle Hudson for help," they mocked. "But he's probably busy with his fiancée. No time for a pathetic stray like you."

With trembling hands, I dialed the number I knew by heart.

Ring... ring...

The call was rejected.

I gritted my teeth and dialed again.

I called countless times. It was rejected countless times.

The last shred of hope died in the endless dial tone.

I lay on the cold ground, my heart dead.

They laughed even harder. "See? The Volkov Family has completely abandoned you."

After they'd had their fun and, seeing I was close to death, got scared of having a body on their hands, they kicked me a couple of times and left.

I forced myself up on my last ounce of strength and, dragging my soaked body, walked step by step back to the Volkov estate.

The butler was horrified when he saw me, bruised and battered.

"Miss Liriel! My God, I'll inform the Don at once..."

"Don't," I said, my voice weak but firm.

He had already announced to the world that I had nothing to do with the Volkovs. Even if he knew, he probably wouldn't care.

I walked into the room I had lived in for ten years and started to pack.

I threw all the couture dresses, the expensive jewelry, the limited-edition bags, and even the toys from my childhood that Hudson had given me into trash bags.

I took nothing.

I left with a single small suitcase containing my parents' belongings and the marriage alliance agreement.

I walked out of the estate and didn't look back.

In the car, I pulled out my phone and saw Bianca's latest Instagram post.

It was a perfect nine-photo grid.

In the pictures, Hudson had booked out the most exclusive garden restaurant in New York to celebrate her birthday.

The caption read: "Thank you for remembering my peanut allergy and even canceling your trip to Miami to stay with me. I'm the happiest girl in the world."

The comments were filled with congratulations from Hudson's mafia friends.

When Hudson first took me in, they all thought I was a burden and never accepted me. But now, after just a few days, they had all embraced Bianca.

I looked at the rare, gentle profile of Hudson in the photo.

The tenderness he once reserved only for me was now someone else's.

Through a blur of tears, I liked the post.

Hudson, this time, you're free.

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

With all the intel gathered, Hudson and his men stormed the Brooke family's secret compound.Capo Rossi's real daughter, Elena, had been kept there. The Brooke family was caught completely off guard and quickly taken down.Hudson saw Elena. She was pale and thin, her skin almost translucent from lack of sunlight, her body covered in scars. She stared at him, her eyes wide. "Are you here to take me home?"Hudson had one of his men drape a coat over her shoulders and nodded gently. "I'll arrange a place for you. You will inherit your father's estate. No one will ever hurt you again."This time, he wouldn't be foolish enough to use his own marriage as a bargaining chip.A look of gratitude washed over Elena's face.Hudson was about to get in his car when he realized his ring was gone. The ring Liriel had given him, her declaration of love. He had taken it to the best jeweler, but it still had fine cracks in it.Even so, Hudson wore it like a treasure, waiting for the day he could show Lir

"It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
