Chapter 7

Author: Eirlys
The next morning, I was jolted awake by Anna's frantic phone call.

"Liriel! Turn on the news! Something huge happened!" Anna's voice was panicked.

I shot up in bed and opened the news alert on my phone.

The headline was stark: [SHOCKING! Restaurant Owned by Volkov Don's Fiancée's Adoptive Father Under Investigation for Severe Food Poisoning!]

But when I clicked on the article, my blood ran cold.

Where a photo of Bianca's adoptive father should have been, there was a crystal-clear picture of my dead parents.

I immediately called the media outlet and demanded they change the photo.

The editor hemmed and hawed, refusing, until I threatened to call the police. Only then did he spill the truth:

"The Volkov Don provided the photos himself!"

My mind went blank. Without even changing, I stumbled out of the apartment and hailed a cab straight to Hudson's corporate headquarters.

I had to ask him to his face. Why would he do this?

When I reached the door to the CEO's office, it was slightly ajar.

I was about to push it open when I heard the angry, confused voice of his second-in-command, Dimitri. "Boss! Why would you use a photo of Miss Liriel's parents to take the fall?! They're dead!"

Hudson's tired, cold voice came through the door. "Because the person behind this is Liriel."

"She 'ran into us' at the restaurant yesterday, pretended to be generous and give up her room. Two hours later, there's a massive food poisoning incident. Bianca's adoptive parents are simple people. They'd never use bad ingredients."

Hudson let out a cold laugh. "Liriel is incorrigible. She's jealous of Bianca, so she framed her parents. If she's going to pull stunts like this, she needs to learn there are consequences."

Every word was a needle, stabbing into my chest.

The love I once had for him was now the only evidence he needed to condemn me.

I stood outside the door, my hand clamped over my mouth to stifle any sound.

I finally understood. Hudson had never trusted me. In his heart, he had already decided I was a wicked woman.

Ten years of devotion, all for a ridiculous, one-sided mistake.

I turned and left in a daze, without ever opening that door.

When I got back to my apartment, the sight that greeted me sent me spiraling.

My address had been leaked online by angry mobs.

The front door was splattered with bright red paint, the lock broken. I rushed inside to find the walls covered in graffiti: "MURDERER," "VICIOUS BITCH."

The antique furniture my parents had left me was smashed to pieces.

And the one and only family photo I had treasured for ten years was slashed to ribbons, floating in the filthy water of the toilet.

This was my last safe harbor.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just silently packed what little I had left, called a cleaning service, and then contacted a real estate agent to sell the ravaged apartment at a low price.

After all that was done, I took a cab to the airport.

Sitting in the departure lounge, with ten minutes until boarding, I took out my laptop. I sent the evidence I had spent a fortune to dig up overnight—the real list of substandard ingredients from Bianca's adoptive father's restaurant, along with my parents' death certificates from ten years ago—to every social media platform on the internet.

I tagged the Volkov Group and Hudson's personal account.

The caption was a single, sharp sentence: "Hey, Godfather. Care to explain how dead people crawl out of their graves to open a restaurant? Maybe the signature on this invoice will give you and your fiancée the answer you're looking for."

Less than five minutes after I sent the proof, news sites exploded. My phone started ringing off the hook.

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

She was pale and thin, her skin almost translucent from lack of sunlight, her body covered in scars. She stared at him, her eyes wide. "Are you here to take me home?"Hudson had one of his men drape a coat over her shoulders and nodded gently. "I'll arrange a place for you. You will inherit your father's estate. No one will ever hurt you again."This time, he wouldn't be foolish enough to use his own marriage as a bargaining chip.A look of gratitude washed over Elena's face.Hudson was about to get in his car when he realized his ring was gone. The ring Liriel had given him, her declaration of love. "It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
