Chapter 6

Author: Eirlys
Half an hour later, the taxi pulled up to a luxury penthouse apartment building by Central Park.

It was a gift from my parents for my twelfth birthday. My mother had once gently stroked my hair and told me that no matter how stormy the world got, this place would always be my safe harbor, a place no one could take from me.

The moment I opened the door, the familiar scent of sandalwood washed over me.

The apartment still held traces of my parents' lives; every piece of furniture gave me a long-lost sense of security.

I threw myself onto the sofa, exhausted and hurt, and fell into a deep sleep.

For the next few days, I stayed in the apartment, nursing my wounds. I didn't think about Hudson once. Even the annoying comments had gone silent.

One day, my friend Anna, seeing I was down, insisted on taking me shopping.

She was stunned when she saw me at the coffee shop.

I had chopped off the long, waist-length hair I'd kept for years, replacing it with a chic, shoulder-length bob.

I'd shed the sophisticated dresses I once wore to seem older for Hudson, now in a simple white t-shirt and jeans.

"Liriel, you... what happened to you?" Anna's eyes were red as she touched my hair.

I just shrugged and stirred my coffee. "I'm about to be married off to Chicago for the Family. A new look for a new life, right? Time to say goodbye to the past."

Anna sighed, her voice a mix of sadness and acceptance. "Alright. Then let's go to that new Michelin three-star restaurant. A celebration of your new life."

But as the waiter led us into the lavish restaurant, I saw them: Bianca and Hudson, with an elderly couple, surrounded by a swarm of reporters with cameras.

Anna's face went dark. She grabbed my arm to leave, muttering, "Damn it. Lost my appetite."

I didn't want to see them either, but before we could get out the door, Hudson called my name.

"Liriel?"

Bianca immediately came over, holding the elderly couple's arms, and introduced them warmly. "Liriel, what a coincidence. These are my adoptive parents. They were so good to me during the years I was separated from my real parents."

"Hudson was worried I'd miss them, so he brought them here and even opened this restaurant for them."

Her voice was dripping with smug satisfaction.

I looked at her calmly and said flatly, "Congratulations. I hope you all have a nice meal."

Bianca's eyes darted around, and she sighed as if by accident. "Actually, there's something I wanted to ask you. My adoptive mother has severe asthma and can't stay in the cold guest rooms. Could you... let them have your master bedroom? The big one that faces south?"

Anna was shaking with rage, ready to curse Bianca out.

I gently held Anna back. Looking at Bianca's challenging face, I smiled magnanimously. "No problem. I won't be using it anyway. They can have the room. They can even throw my stuff out."

The smile on Bianca's face froze. She clearly hadn't expected me to agree so easily, so calmly.

I turned to leave, not caring, but Hudson caught up to me. He looked down at me, his voice gentle. "Liriel, this is just temporary. I know you don't like Bianca. Your parents left you that apartment, right? Why don't you stay there tonight? I'll have someone pack your things and send them over."

I looked at his self-righteous expression and almost laughed.

He didn't even know I had already moved out of the estate.

"No need to trouble yourself, I've already—"

"Hudson!" Bianca's voice cut me off. "The reporters are waiting! We need to go do the interview!"

Hudson turned his head. As he raised his hand to soothe Bianca, I clearly saw the blinding Cartier wedding band on his ring finger.

It was an identical match to the one on Bianca's hand.

Of course. The broken ring was already forgotten. A new one was a better fit.

I looked away and walked out of the restaurant with Anna, not looking back.

In the car on the way home, my phone buzzed.

It was a text from Hudson: [What were you going to say?]

I stared at the screen, typed "Nothing," and hit send. I could see he was typing for a long time, but no reply ever came.

A month later, Dexter and I were on our honeymoon, traveling the world.I was sunbathing on a beach.Beside me, Dexter was mixing drinks, his face sour. He was glaring at Hudson, who was a short distance away."That shameless old bastard! Why is he stalking us on our honeymoon!"I was used to his grumbling. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively, "You're my husband. Who cares about him?"That one sentence was all it took. Dexter's face lit up, and he happily went to get me some cut fruit.A moment later, my phone buzzed with another message from Hudson:[There's a gala at the hotel tonight. I brought a set of jewelry that would go perfectly with the gown you had made the other day.]I didn't reply.I just got up and walked back to the hotel. Not long after I got back to our suite, a hotel employee knocked on the door with the jewelry set.I was about to refuse when I saw Hudson standing in the distance. His eyes were full of sorrow, his smile bitter."Just think of

Inside the hallowed, ancient castle. The wedding march began to play.My face covered by a veil, I held my dress and walked down the aisle toward Dexter. The officiant stood between us, reciting the vows.Until he asked:"...does the bride take the groom?"In the next second, a deep, urgent voice cut through the quiet."She doesn't."The guests erupted in murmurs.I instinctively looked toward the voice and my heart leaped when I saw it was Hudson. He had lost a lot of weight; his tailored suit hung loosely on his frame. His leg seemed to be injured; he was leaning on a cane for support. He looked at me, his handsome eyes filled with love and regret."Liriel, I'm sorry.""I was wrong. I thought that by letting you go, letting you see the world and meet people your own age, you would understand what love really is. So when things happened, I would always blame you. It wasn't until the truth came out that I realized how foolish I was. The person I thought I was repaying a debt to was an

The presentation was a huge success.I took my team out for a celebratory dinner.Afterward, I was outside waiting for a cab when Dexter's car pulled up."Miss Liriel, care for a ride?"Dexter grinned, his eyes sparkling under the streetlights. Before any of my colleagues could see, I quickly jumped into the passenger seat.As the car moved smoothly through the streets, I closed my eyes, pretending to rest."So when exactly is this husband of yours going to be made public?"Dexter's voice, full of mock complaint, broke the silence. He started listing my "suitors.""The project lead brought you coffee today. The department head smiled at you for way too long and asked you to play tennis this weekend!"Because I wanted to prove myself, I hadn't announced my status. I even made a point of disagreeing with him in meetings. This wasn't the first time he had complained.Seeing his pouting face, I tilted my head, a small smile playing on my lips, and decided to tease him."Well," I teased, "w

"It's not like that, Hudson! I was at home then, how could I have ordered him to do something like that?"Bianca was stuttering, terrified, but still denying everything.Hudson just stared at her, his expression cold and unreadable.Bianca's eyes were red. She tentatively tugged on his sleeve, tears streaming down her face."Hudson, I really didn't tell her bodyguards to leave. Please, believe me..."But Hudson, who would normally have pulled her into a comforting embrace, slowly pulled his sleeve from her grasp. His voice was glacial."Whether it was you or not, I will investigate everything. Including how Liriel got hurt."The coldness in his eyes sent a shiver down Bianca's spine. She looked down, hiding her guilt and unease, but didn't dare show any weakness. She forced a smile."Hudson, before you investigate, can you please get my parents out of jail? They're old, I'm worried..."Hudson straightened the cuff she had wrinkled, his tone puzzled."Why would I get them out? The evide
