Anyta’s POV

“How far out are you?” I spoke into the phone, glancing at the road that stretched both ways in front of the gallery. A fleet of cars were already parked in front, and more were arriving every minute. With every car that stopped, with every guest that alighted and walked into the building, I felt as if an impending doom was approaching. I couldn’t do this
not alone.

Which was why I was chattering at Jamie through my phone.

“A couple minutes,” Jamie’s voice drifted through the phone

  • Too Late, Mr. Billionaire    Chapter 133

Anyta POV Clay and I hashed out the various ways we could find the information we needed, well into the night. Our discussion was cut only by the need to take care of Teddy; to bathe him for the evening, feed him and put him to bed.It was as I was returning to the living room after Teddy had fallen asleep that the idea came to me.“I know how we can get Everett to tell us what we need him to,” I announced as I entered the living room and sank back into the seat I’d vacated. Clay looked up from the empty bottle of whiskey that he’d been fiddling with, eyebrows raised in interest.“Oh? What’s your idea?”“I’ll bait him with Teddy,” I said. It was a foolproof plan, in my opinion. Judging by the skeptical expression on Clay’s face, however, he didn’t exactly agree.“How exactly do you plan on doing that? Last I checked, Everett wasn’t exactly keen on getting to know his son,” Clay murmured darkly, then added almost as an afterthought; “Or the mother that birthed him.”I blushed at his w

Anyta’s POV I was going through the reports that summarized the losses, profits and successes of the gallery showing when my phone rang. It was the day after the showing, and I’d elected to stay at home, mostly wallowing in my bed, due to the emotional rollercoaster of the day before. First Jamie’s confession. Then Clay’s arrival and subsequent departure. Things with Jamie were still mostly unresolved. The both of us had returned home mostly confused and hurting, though Jamie was graceful and kind about it as always. I almost resented him for it; it was a dull resentment, flavored by guilt. I couldn’t fully understand the cocktail of feeling myself. I acknowledged that I had hurt him. I should’ve been grateful that he was being so mature about things. And yet, I didn’t want him to be mature. I wanted him to be angry, to be shattered, to rage and make his hurt known. So that this heavy feeling in my chest would abate somewhat, knowing that someone hated me for something I deserved.

Clay POV I held the phone to my ear for several long moments, not saying anything. I heard Jodie’s breathing through the speaker, and she was quiet as well. She had probably been expecting a greeting, or a question; something that would put the ball in her court, allow her to control the flow of the conversation. Unfortunately for her, I wasn’t in the mood for that at the moment.Plus, I quite liked putting her off her guard.“Hello?” she finally spoke up, her voice notably hesitant. “Is this Clay?”“Indeed,” I said. “Hello, Jodie.”Her sigh was audible through the speaker. “Would I be correct in assuming that you’ve obtained some information regarding me that might seem incriminating?”I could help the chuckle that escaped me at her words. “That is quite the candid statement, Jodie. Not beating around the bush, are we?”I could almost hear her shrug through the phone. “I don’t see the point in being obtuse at the moment, Clay. I know I’ve been made. Trying to pretend otherwise will

Clay POV The sight in front of me knocked the breath out of my chest. The sight of her in his arms, held lovingly
it made me angry and sad in equal measure, a combination that was almost enough to make me nauseous. I met Anyta’s eyes for a split second, and I couldn’t bear to linger for longer than that.I nodded sharply for want of something, anything, to do, then I turned and left the building.I almost couldn’t see the world in front of and around me as I walked towards the car. The only thing that lingered in the back of my retinas was Anyta and her lover; it was enough to make a man want to gouge his eyes out.I arrived at me car and lingered at the door for a moment, my fingers brushing the door handle. I looked up at the gallery once more; something within me pulled me towards the entrance. An attraction
no, an imperative that was commanding me to storm into the building and claim Anyta as mine. She was mine
wasn’t she?No, she wasn’t.With my heart feeling almost painfully fu

wanted to make sure you were one your way.”Yeah, right. As if anyone would believe me, least of all Jamie. I could hear the slight tremor in my voice, and even if I managed to come across as unruffled, I couldn’t deny that I was fidgeting, on the verge of pacing around the foyer and only just managing to stop myself. “Of course,” Jamie said, his voice gentle and soothing. I al

  • Too Late, Mr. Billionaire    Chapter 128

CLAY'S POVIt was with a sense of apprehension that I entered my car. As the sound of the door slamming shut echoed in the now confined space, I inhaled deeply to steady my bearing and calm my palpitating heart, then pulled out my phone and clicked on the messaging app. A new message blinked innocuously at the top of the inbox, the information it contained making me apprehensive.‘I have some pertinent information about the caller. When should we meet?’The message instilled a sense of rage and relief in me, all at once. Absently, my mind went to the outing — I almost dubbed it a date — that I had gone to with Anyta, to the art gallery. It had almost been perfect. I wasn't sure, couldn't truly confirm anything, but for a moment, or several moment, it had almost felt like things would go back to the way they used to. The walls that had been built up between the both of us were being slowly but steadily chopped away by sheer proximity, and it was all I could've ever asked for.Until th
