CLAY’S POV

The alarm kept blaring. I killed the call before it connected and pulled up the security feed on my phone instead, my thumb steady even as my pulse wasn’t.

There were two heat signatures moving together.

I want to call Philip yet, so I moved.

I had a safe place down the hallway, past the guest room, into the panel behind the bookshelf that Philip had installed two years ago and that I’d never once thought I’d need.

  • Too Late, Mr. Billionaire    Chapter 147

CLAY’S POVThe alarm kept blaring. I killed the call before it connected and pulled up the security feed on my phone instead, my thumb steady even as my pulse wasn’t.There were two heat signatures moving together.I want to call Philip yet, so I moved.I had a safe place down the hallway, past the guest room, into the panel behind the bookshelf that Philip had installed two years ago and that I’d never once thought I’d need.I pressed my thumb to the reader and it clicked open immediately. I killed the lights on the whole floor from the panel inside, then the ones below it, working from memory. I knew they couldn’t hit what they can’t see, so it comes down to who knows the room.I heard the first one on the stairwell before I saw him, his boot scraping against the concrete, too careless if I must admit. He rounded the corner and I was already moving, low, into his knees. He went down hard, and I had his head against the floor before he got a sound out past the first one.“Where’s you

CLAY’S POVThe note sat crumpled in my pocket like a bad itch I couldn’t scratch the whole drive home. I caught myself touching it at every stop light, feeling the sharp edges of the paper against my fingers.Tell her the rest of it, Owen.It was definitely Marcus that sent it in. He knew exactly where to hold me. And there was only one thing that phrase could mean.My father.Owen Grayson Sr. That bastard didn’t just leave us. He built the Grey Syndicate from the ground up. While my mother worked double shifts scrubbing floors and serving tables just to keep food for us, he was out there being a king of his empire. I pieced it all together years after she had died, digging through old contacts and half-written records. When the truth finally hit me, I decided to tear it down from the inside and rebuild it.I took pieces of his work and made them mine without his knowledge. I met with him and introduced myself, but he barely acknowledged me. When I got older, I calculated my moves and

ANYTA’S POVClay looked me dead in the eyes. “I promise.” He said firmly. The coffee shop’s air suddenly felt thick, buzzing between us. He leaned forward a bit to assure me. I stayed right where I was, my heart pounding against my chest.“I really want you to mean it,” I whispered. “No more secrets between us.”“None,” he answered, his voice rough and husky. “Not with you, Anyta. I promise to always tell you everything.”His gaze dropped to my mouth and my breath caught. The little space between us felt electric. I could smell the faint coffee on his breath, the lights highlighting the gold flecks in his hazel eyes. After all the cold nights with Everett, this warmth from Clay made my stomach flip. Part of me wanted to close the gap right there.“Clay
” I started, my voice soft.“Yeah?” he murmured, leaning in a little more.My phone rang, cutting through the moment.I glanced down. It was Jamie. I flushed as Clay saw the screen. I mouthed “I’m sorry” to him, my cheeks pink and hot.

CLAY’S POVThe warmth of Anyta’s hand over mine hit harder than it should have. Three months of keeping my distance, of reminding myself every damn day that she needed space to rebuild her life and take care of Teddy. I couldn’t afford to pull away from her. We just sat there in the back corner of the coffee shop, her fingers light but certain on top of mine, the steam from our forgotten Americanos curling between us.Almost a full minute passed after we finished our pancake arguments. My eyes stayed on the street outside, but every part of me was tuned to the woman across the table. Her touch was extremely soft but it was dangerous. She finally pulled her hand back, wrapping both palms around her mug as if she needed something solid to hold onto. The loss of contact left a cool spot on my skin. Anyta stared into her coffee for a beat, then lifted her gaze to mine. Those eyes—soft but sharper now after everything she’d survived—held me in place.“Tell me about your mother,” she asked

CLAY’S POVI finally recognized the black SUV as one of mine—Grey Syndicate enforcement, the plate number etched into my memory like a barcode. Webb was keeping me on my toes, but I’d completely forgotten about my own machine running in the background. One of my lieutenants must have jumped the gun the second the tabloid story dropped, thinking they were doing me a favor. Stupid move. The last thing I needed right now was my shadow operation spooking Anyta before I was ready to peel back the layers and show her who I really was .The city streets felt narrower than usual, the afternoon light bouncing off glass buildings in sharp, unforgiving angles. Anyta walked beside me, her presence a quiet anchor amid the chaos swirling in my head. I kept my hand steady on the small of her back, guiding her.“This way,” I murmured, steering her toward the small coffee shop on the corner. The bell above the door chimed softly as I pushed it open, the warm scent of roasted beans and fresh pastries w

CLAY’S POVI was already in the car when Anyta texted me the address of Whitaker’s office. I’d spent the last hour preparing exactly what needed to be said and how to say it. Marcus wanted to play dirty in public. I was going to feed him from his own plate and make sure the taste lingered. The drive over gave me too much time to think. I kept seeing Teddy’s innocent eyes flash in my mind. That little boy had already carried more than any child should. I wasn’t about to let Marcus Webb turn the rest of his life into tabloid garbage for sport.I pulled up to the building just as Anyta stepped off the elevator on Whitaker’s floor. Our eyes met in the hallway. She looked steady enough on the surface, but I knew her well enough to spot the tension running through her shoulders. I gave her a small nod and we walked into the conference room together.Whitaker and two of his associates were waiting, along with the court reporter Margaret had insisted on bringing in for the official record. I

ANYTA'S POVThe phone felt slick in my palm, a bead of sweat tracing a slow, itchy path down the dip in my back. I frowned up at the AC, then huffed out a frustrated breath.I kept my head down, my hair acting as a dark curtain between me and the high-ceilinged magnificence of the agency's lobby."

ANYTA'S POVI didn’t cryI didn’t feel like I deserved to. I was the one who ruined this anyways.Instead of facing the truth, I'd chickened out like a coward and lashed out because it was easier to deny everything than face the undeniable weight of attraction I felt towards my best friend. That ki

EVERETT'S POV“Seriously, if I knew dinner would be a group project, I'd have just gone to bed.”“Oh please,” Leo snarled. “You could just move out of the mansion if it's too much trouble to eat with your family now.”“Well good thing I don't consider you family,” I retorted coldly.“Well the paper
