By 3:00 p.m., Lorenza showed up at Leonardo Marchesi’s office with a lunchbox in hand.

Grazia Rossi, the secretary, saw her but didn’t greet her.

Lorenza walked in calmly, her back perfectly straight. She asked,

“Ms. Rossi, where is Leonardo? I brought him something to eat.”

Without looking up, Grazia replied,

“Mr. Marchesi is in a meeting.”

Lorenza glanced at her briefly, then turned and headed toward the conference room. She knocked lightly on the door.

The meeting was still in session.

Lorenza walked in with a crutch in one hand and the lunchbox in the other.

“Leonardo, you didn’t eat much earlier. Have this once you’re done.”

Leonardo was already irritated. Just thinking about divorcing Lucia only added to his frustration.

“We’re in the middle of a meeting. What are you doing here?”

Lorenza froze.

“I—I didn’t hear anything. I thought—”

Grazia suddenly appeared outside the conference room.

“I did tell Ms. Taddei that you were in a meeting.”

Alessandro was the heir to one of the most powerful families in San Celestino. Just because Lucia knew Damiano, she thought she could act on impulse like this. Leonardo felt that she was being far too reckless. “Apologies, Mr. Bianchi. My wife and I have some disagreements. I didn’t expect her to drag you into this. Please allow me to cover dinner tonight as an apology.” Leonardo remained calm and composed. Alessandro was nothing like Damiano. He dressed like a gentleman, but his gaze was razor-sharp. He stared directly at Leonardo, smiled faintly, and asked, “Oh? What sort of disagreement would that be?” Lorenza stepped forward, as though she were sacrificing herself for the greater good. “Lucia is a little impulsive. She lied and said you were part of her family just to spite Leonardo. This is completely out of line.” Alessandro narrowed his eyes. His gaze shifted to Lucia, sharp and cold, as if silently asking: This is the man you were so desperate to marry? Ale

“It’s nice to meet you, Ms. Valencia, Ms. Dougherty. You’re both just as pretty as our mom,” Nina said sweetly. Nico followed her lead and politely greeted them as well. Carla Dougherty smiled softly. “Nice to meet you too.” Carolina Valencia lit up the moment she saw them. “Oh my God! What a pair of adorable kids! Come here—let me hug you!” Nina instantly took a liking to Carolina and happily let her hold her. Carla, worried that Nico might feel left out, reached out to hug him as well. But Nico shook his head politely. “I’m a bit heavy, Ms. Dougherty. You don’t have to.” That little gentlemanly act almost melted her heart. Smiling, Carla said, “We bought you new toys. Let’s go play.” “Thank you, Ms. Dougherty!” Leonardo Marchesi didn’t look happy as he watched the group ahead, laughing and chatting. Lorenza, walking slowly, held onto his hand as they made their way forward at a leisurely pace. From afar, anyone might have thought they were just another couple on

Carolina Valencia was stunned by Lorenza. She wondered if this was the kind of person people referred to as “a tough one.” Lucia didn’t bother with pleasantries. She looked straight at Lorenza and said flatly, “Well, you’ve seen me now. Time to leave.” The only reason she had allowed Leonardo Marchesi into her home was to show him that leaving him wasn’t the end of her life. If anything, she was going to thrive. “We came all this way, and you’re not even offering us a meal?” Alexa said, clearly displeased. “Leonardo, you really need to teach her some manners. This is unacceptable.” Lucia replied coolly, “I didn’t hire any maids, so there’s no one here to cook for you.” Alexa scoffed confidently. “Don’t you know how to cook? And if not, your two friends could help. Hospitality matters in a respectable household. You don’t want people gossiping behind your back.” Even Carla Dougherty, who was usually gentle and quiet, couldn’t hold back. “Lucia still has her grandparents. Sh

The memory struck Leonardo Marchesi without warning, softening his expression. He looked at Lorenza and said gently, “I really should thank you for giving me two beautiful children.” Lorenza lowered her head. “I loved you so much back then. Having your children was all I ever wanted.” A trace of sadness shimmered in her eyes. Leonardo pressed his lips together. “I’ll have a caregiver stay with you later.” Lorenza froze. Was Lucia’s baby the only thing on his mind now? At People’s Hospital, as soon as they arrived, Leonardo made sure Lorenza was admitted to the orthopedic department. When he turned to leave, Giulia pursed her lips and said, “Leonardo, Lorenza’s injury looks serious. You’re not staying for her checkup? That would really hurt her feelings.” Lorenza tugged at Giulia’s hand. “Giulia, I’m fine.” Then she looked up at Leonardo and smiled gently. “Go on. Go see Lucia. See if she’s pregnant or just feeling unwell. I’ll be okay.” Something in Leonardo’s chest e

“Goodnight, Mom!” Nico giggled. Lucia held back her tears and said softly, “Alright. Goodnight.” She waited until the children were fast asleep before quietly ending the video call. She missed them terribly. But as much as she had every right to be angry with Leonardo, she knew she had no standing to compete with Lorenza. What she didn’t know was that, just outside the children’s room, Leonardo had been standing there the entire time. The hallway was quiet so late at night, and the children’s voices carried clearly. The door wasn’t soundproof—so that adults could hear if anything went wrong. Lucia’s gentle voice as she told the children a bedtime story stirred memories in Leonardo. Lucia had always been quiet, gentle, and smiling. She had treated him the same way. Even now, no matter how late it was, she never turned the children away when they needed her. Leonardo suddenly began questioning himself. Was Lucia really worse than Lorenza? Driven by a sudden impulse, he hea
