Ava: Pov.

The door opened again only seconds after the stranger’s footsteps faded down the hall.

Maya stepped inside, phone still in her hand, and stopped the moment she saw my face.

“Ava? What happened?” she asked.

The words tumbled out of me broken and too fast.

“A man was just here. He called me Mrs. Blackwood. He looked at the babies and said they look like their father. He said I can’t hide forever. Then he left the second he saw someone coming.”

Maya’s expression went cold.

She turned an

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 22: WHAT NATHANIEL WANTS

Nathaniel: Pov.The engagement announcement was everywhere.I sat alone on the edge of my bed, phone in hand, scrolling through the same headline over and over. Damien Blackwood and Vanessa Hale. A hopeful new chapter. The pictures were carefully chosen, both of them smiling like the world was finally right again.I had read it a dozen times. Each time something sharper settled into my chest.I called Vanessa. She didn’t pick up.I called again. Still nothing. On the third try she finally answered. Her voice was light, almost amused.“I was wondering when you’d call,” she said.I didn’t bother with greetings.“What does this mean for us?”There was a short pause on the other end.“Nothing has changed,” she said calmly. “You knew this was coming.”“Did I?” My voice came out tighter than I wanted. “You’re engaged to him now. Publicly. You’re planning a life with him while you’re still—”“Still what?” she cut in. “Still sleeping with you? Yes. That part hasn’t changed. Damien is a means

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 21: THE ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Damien: Pov.My mother sat across from me in the living room of the family estate, legs crossed, expression calm. The ring box was already open on the table between us.“I’ve chosen the date range and the wording for the press release,” she said. “The announcement will go out this week.”I looked at the ring. It was elegant, expensive, and completely lifeless under the light.“You’re not asking me,” I said.“No.” Her voice stayed even. “I’m telling you what needs to happen. The company is steadying. The public needs to see that the Blackwood name is moving forward. Vanessa is the right choice. She always was.”I didn’t argue. The emptiness I had carried for months sat heavy in my chest, but I no longer had the energy to fight her. I simply nodded. She continued speaking about the guest list, the venue options, the carefully planned photos that would be released with the announcement. I heard the words, but they slid past me without sticking. All I could feel was the quiet weight of a

He said I can’t hide forever. Then he left the second he saw someone coming.”Maya’s expression went cold. She turned and ran to the door, checking both directions of the hallway. Empty. She pressed the call button hard. A nurse rushed in. By the time hospital security checked the halls and the front desk, there was no trace of anyone matching what I described.Maya sat on the edge of the bed and took my hand.“You’re safe now,” she said, but her voice was tight. “I’m not leaving you alone again.”I looked down at Lily and Lucas sleeping against my chest and said nothing. I didn’t feel safe. I only felt watched.

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 19: THE BIRTH.

Ava: Pov.The nurse’s voice came out careful, almost soft, like she was afraid of what the words might do to me.“One of the babies’ heart rates has dropped.”The room changed in a single breath. The doctor moved faster. Orders flew. A machine beeped louder. Hands reached for things I could not name. Everything that had felt controlled a moment ago was gone.I tried to follow what they were saying, but the pain kept folding me in half. My body still pushed and pulled at the same time, and the fear sat so heavy in my chest I could barely breathe. Tears slipped down the sides of my face into the pillow without permission. I was so tired of fighting alone.Maya’s hand never left mine.“It’s okay,” she kept saying, even though her voice shook. “They’re going to fix it. Just stay with me.”I couldn’t answer. My mouth opened, but only a broken sound came out. I thought of the smaller baby, the one the doctors had worried about from the beginning. I thought of how hard I had fought to keep t

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 18: THE PAIN

Ava: Pov. Blood dropped from my leg to the floor, dark against the pale tile, and for a second the whole room seemed to tilt sideways. "No, God, please. This can't be happening. Please, no!" The wall was the only thing keeping me standing. The doctor's words about the smaller baby came back to me in pieces, out of order, and my stomach dropped straight through the floor. "Someone should please help me!" Before I could think past that, a pain tore through my lower abdomen and my fingers dug into the edge of the table so hard the wood bit into my skin. I reached for the phone on the bed. It slipped once, twice, before I finally got a grip on it. "Who should I call? Should I call Adrian or Maya? Ahhh!" The names crashed into each other in my head, refusing to settle into an order that made sense. "Let me just call Maya." I found her number and pressed it, phone pressed so hard against my ear it hurt. She picked up immediately. "Hello?" "Maya!" "Ava, what's wrong?

  • Too Late Mr Blackwood    CHAPTER 17: WHAT THE SCREEN SHOWED

Ava: Pov.I was left alone in the room. The technician had gone to call the doctor. I looked at the screen again, trying to figure out what had happened."God, please. I hope nothing is wrong with my babies.""Ava, calm down," I said to myself. "Maybe the technician just wants the doctor to see something. It won't be that serious."But the way her hands had shaken, the way she'd run out, that stayed with me. I placed both hands on my stomach."Nothing is going to happen to both of you. Mummy is here."I watched the door, waiting. It felt like forever. Finally it opened. The doctor walked in with the technician quiet behind him. His face looked heavy."Doctor, is something wrong with my babies?" My voice shook. He didn't answer right away. He walked to the screen first."Someone should please talk to me. Am I okay? Are my babies alright?""Madame, please. I need you to calm down.""How do you want me to calm down? You are not saying anything to me."He looked at me for a few seconds, t
