ELARA'S POV

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed midnight, its heavy echo ringing through the silent halls of the Vale estate.

I stood in my small, stripped fragrance room, holding a simple canvas duffel bag. I packed only what truly belonged to me: my essential botanical oils, my leather formulation journal, my passport, and my late foster mother’s silver carved locket. Every diamond necklace, designer gown, and silk coat Lucien had ever purchased for me remained untouched in the dressing room.

I didn't leave a note. The platinum wedding ring on his desk said everything that ever needed to be said.

I slipped out through the side entrance, stepping into the violent coastal rainstorm roaring over Aurelia. The wind howled against the grand estate, blowing cold rain across my face, but for the first time in eight years, I felt like I could actually breathe.

I got into my worn, decade-old silver hatchback…the one car I had kept in my own name, and turned the ignition. The engine sputtered to life, and I steered down the long, winding driveway toward the main highway, bound for Bellmere. My childhood town. The one place where I could spend my remaining six months in peace, away from the suffocation of the Vale family.

"Just six months," I whispered to myself, clutching the steering wheel tight as sheet rain plastered the windshield. "Six months of freedom."

The highway morphed into the treacherous cliffside coastal road, sheets of water flooding the asphalt. Thunder cracked overhead, illuminating the churning ocean hundreds of feet below the sharp rocks.

Suddenly, a searing wave of exhaustion hit my chest. My vision flickered, dots of black creeping into the edges of my sight as a sudden autoimmune flare-up struck without warning. My hands trembled against the wheel, my breathing shallow and ragged.

"No... not now... please," I gasped, trying to blink away the haze.

Up ahead, a dark shape loomed out of the storm—a massive fallen tree branch blocking the outer lane.

Before I could react, headlights blinded my side mirror. A large dark SUV was rounding the slippery bend from the opposite direction, swerving wildly to avoid the fallen debris in its path.

"Watch out!" I screamed, slamming my foot onto the brake pedal.

Tires shrieked against wet pavement. The world spun in violent, chaotic circles.

BANG.

The crunch of metal on metal echoed louder than the thunder. The force of the impact tossed my small car sideways. The driver-side window shattered, throwing a shower of glittering glass into the air. My vehicle flipped twice before skidding upside down against the jagged embankment, pinned against the metal guardrail above the cliff.

Silence rushed in, heavy and thick, broken only by the hiss of smoke and the steady rhythm of rain pouring through the smashed windows.

I lay suspended in my seatbelt, blood trickling warm down my temple, pooling into my lashes. My body felt numb, distant, as if I were floating above myself.

Is this it? I thought softly, feeling the cold rain splash against my cheek. Did my six months just run out?

Heavy, frantic footsteps splashed rapidly through the mud outside. Someone was slamming against the crushed driver's side door with terrifying strength.

"Damn it! Hold on!" a deep, commanding voice roared over the storm.

With a hideous wrenching sound of tearing metal, the door was pried open.

Strong, warm hands unclipped my seatbelt, catching my limp body before I could hit the roof. I was pulled out into the freezing rain, cradled tightly against a broad, massive chest.

"Stay with me! Open your eyes!" the voice demanded, laced with an unfamiliar, raw panic.

I forced my blood-stained eyelashes open.

Through the blur of rain and fading consciousness, I saw a towering man looking down at me. He had sharp, noble features, drenched dark hair, and piercing dark green eyes that were staring at my face in utter, breathless horror.

He wasn't looking at me like a stranger on the road. He was looking at me like a man who had just seen a ghost.

His thumb wiped the blood away from my cheekbone, trembling as his eyes fixed on a small, crescent-shaped birthmark right beneath my shoulder where my shirt had torn.

"No..." he breathed, his voice cracking violently against the roar of the ocean. "It can't be..."

"Who..." I rasped, my vision going completely black as darkness finally pulled me under. "Who are you?"

"Elara," the man whispered, pulling me closer against his chest as if his life depended on it. "I found you."

  • Too Late, Mr. Vale   CHAPTER 7: THE DEATH OF THE OLD ELARA

ELARA'S POVThe official DNA report lay face down on the silk duvet."Ninety-nine point nine percent," Dorian said, pulling up a sleek digital chart beside my bed. "Not that any of us needed a piece of paper to know the truth."I stared at my trembling hands. "The tests at Aurelia General... the doctors said my immune system was collapsing. They said I had six months."Dorian’s jaw tightened, his eyes flashing with a cold, terrifying authority I had never seen in a physician. "Aurelia General is heavily funded by the Vale family’s medical network. Their chief of immunology is a close associate of Lucien’s mother. Whether it was gross negligence or deliberate suppression, their diagnosis was wrong."My breath hitched. "Wrong?""You have a rare, aggressive autoimmune strain, yes," Dorian explained, leaning in, his tone dropping into absolute certainty. "To an ordinary hospital, it looks terminal. But under the Vespera Foundation's experimental cellular therapy…a treatment unavailable to

  • Too Late, Mr. Vale   CHAPTER 6: THE BLOODLINE AWAKENS

ELARA'S POVThe steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor was the first sound that pulled me from the darkness.I opened my eyes, expecting the sterile smell of bleached corridors and cold metal. Instead, the rich scent of crushed white lilies, cedarwood, and rain filled the air. I was lying in a plush bed, swathed in Egyptian cotton, inside a massive private medical suite that looked more like an estate bedchamber than an ICU."Careful," a low, gentle voice murmured beside me. "Don't try to sit up too fast. You have two fractured ribs."I turned my head slowly. Standing by the edge of my bed was the man from the crash…the dark-haired giant with those striking green eyes. He wore a crisp white medical coat, but his expression was stripped of all clinical detachment. In his hand, he held a worn, yellowed black-and-white photograph."Where... where am I?" I rasped, my throat raw and dry. "Who are you?""You are safe," he said softly, stepping closer. "You're at Villa Seraphine, in the pr

  • Too Late, Mr. Vale   CHAPTER 5: THE RATIONALIZED AGONY

LUCIEN'S POVThe silver platinum band sat on the mahogany desk, catching the cold morning light. Beside it lay a single, dried botanical leaf—brittle and entirely unnecessary.I picked up the ring, turning it slowly between my thumb and forefinger. She is being dramatic, I thought, setting it back down with a precise, muted click. She will go to some boutique hotel downtown for a day or two, realize how exhausting complete independence is, and return once her temper cools. It was the only logical outcome. Elara had no independent means, no family network to turn to, and no current career after abandoning her perfume mixing years ago. Where else could she possibly go? Her dramatic exit last night was simply an emotional plea…a desperate attempt to force my attention.I leaned back in my leather chair, rubbing the bridge of my nose. Accepting Celestine’s surrogacy was a business and family sacrifice, nothing more. It was a calculated move designed to secure the Vale bloodline and, more

  • Too Late, Mr. Vale   CHAPTER 3: THE SEVERING WORD

ELARA'S POVThe rain had begun to fall by the time I returned home, heavy drops lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Lucien’s private study. The air in the room was thick with the scent of leather, vintage bourbon, and old paper. Lucien stood behind his grand mahogany desk, unbuttoning his waistcoat with measured, unhurried precision. His face was entirely devoid of emotion, as if the scene at the clinic courtyard an hour ago had simply been a minor administrative hiccup."You shouldn't have come to the clinic, Elara," Lucien said, his tone low and dangerously even. "Celestine was shaken by your outburst, and Amelie spent the entire drive home crying."I stood by the leather armchair, my hands tucked into my coat pockets, trembling so violently I had to lean against the wood to keep my balance."Amelie was crying because you let her strike me," I whispered, my voice raw. "You stood there and watched her hit my hand, Lucien. You didn't say a single word."Lucien pulled out h

  • Too Late, Mr. Vale   CHAPTER 2: THE PORTRAIT OF A STRANGER

ELARA'S POVThe air in the private wing of St. Jude’s Clinic smelled of sterile ozone and expensive lilies.I stood in the shadowed alcove of the pharmacy corridor, a small brown paper bag containing my basic daily supplements clutched against my ribs. I hadn't meant to follow them. But when Lucien left the house without looking back, a desperate, pathetic part of me still needed to see it with my own eyes.Through the floor-to-ceiling glass panel leading out to the sunlit private courtyard, I saw them.Lucien stood near a white marble fountain, his dark wool coat unbuttoned, looking down with a rare, relaxed warmth in his eyes. Standing beside him was Celestine Ardent, radiant in a cream cashmere coat, her soft laughter carrying faintly through the glass. And between them was seven-year-old Amelie. My breath hitched in my chest. Amelie was twirling in a pale pink dress, her dark curls bouncing under the morning sun. Celestine knelt gracefully beside her, taking a velvet ribbon from h
