The door swung open and a wedge of corridor light fell across the floor.

Someone stepped inside. The door hissed shut behind them, and the room went dark again except for a small blue glow. A phone, held low, its flashlight pointed at the floor.

I stopped breathing. Beside me, I felt rather than saw Grant shift his weight, putting himself between me and the aisle. He didn't make a sound.

The light moved down the rows. It stopped at a shelf four aisles from us. A drawer sl

  • Too Late, Mr. Whitlock: The Heiress He Divorced   A Quiet Dinner for Two

I said yes on Thursday night, after lying awake until two with Sebastian's last sentence going around in my head like a moth around a lamp.Which is more than your grandfather has ever let you know. He'd chosen a restaurant in the West Village with eleven tables, no sign on the door, and a back room with a fireplace. He was already there when Thomas dropped me off, sitting with his back to the wall like a man in a western, a glass of red wine untouched in front of him.He stood when I came in. He didn't try to kiss my cheek. He just pulled out my chair and waited until I'd sat down before he took his own."Sparkling water," he told the waiter, before I could say anything. Then, to me, with a small shrug: "You didn't touch the champagne at the gala either."I was starting to feel like the whole city had been watching what I drank."I'm not here for dinner," I said. "I'm here because you said you knew my father.""I know." He l

He didn't make a sound. The light moved down the rows. It stopped at a shelf four aisles from us. A drawer slid open. Papers rustled. Then a new sound. A low mechanical whine, the click of a switch, and a hungry grinding I'd have known anywhere, because the gallery had owned one exactly like it.A shredder.Grant let go of my wrist. He walked out of the dark into the aisle and flicked on the overhead lights. The whole room went white.Richard Pell stood beside a portable shredder he'd wheeled in on a hand truck, a binder open in one arm and a sheaf of pages halfway in

  • Too Late, Mr. Whitlock: The Heiress He Divorced   The Records Room

"You can't be seen coming in the front," Grant said on the phone at nine that night. "Use the freight entrance on Pearl Street. Marcus will be at the door.""This is ridiculous," I said. "I'm a board member. I'm allowed in the building.""You're a board member who's being accused of insider trading by an anonymous source inside my company. If anyone sees you walking into the records room at ten at night, Feld will have a second article by breakfast." A pause. "Also, Marcus bought snacks. He's very proud of them."I went in through the freight entrance on Pearl Street.Marcus was there, holding the door with one hand and a plastic grocery bag in the other. He looked like a man smuggling contraband into a prison."Ms. Ashcombe." He lifted the bag slightly. "There are pretzels. And dark chocolate. Only dark. Mr. Whitlock was very specific."I didn't trust myself to answer, so I just nodded.* * *The Wh

The headline was waiting for me on my phone at 6:12 a.m., before I'd even gotten out of bed.ASHCOMBE HEIRESS UNDER SEC SCRUTINY? Sources question how ex-wife timed her 18% Whitlock buy.I read it lying on my back in the dark, the phone held above my face, the baby turning over slowly under my other hand like someone reading over my shoulder. It was a financial blog called The Ledger Line, the kind of site that traders kept open in a second tab and pretended not to. The article was short and very careful. It never said I'd broken the law. It just asked questions. Had Leah Ashcombe, during three years of marriage to Whitlock Logistics' CEO, been privy to confidential merger plans? Had she used that information to time her share purchases? Was it a coincidence that she'd begun buying the week after her divorce?Sources close to the company say the Securities and Exchange Commission has been made aware.Sources close to the

"What envelope?" Grant said.Okafor looked at me. I looked at Grant. For a second, nobody in the room said anything, and I could hear the elevator cables humming through the wall."Ashcombe business," I said."It came in the same handwriting as something else. Your lawyer just said so.""And you just agreed to no personal questions." I held his eyes. "Thirty seconds into the truce, Grant. That has to be a record, even for you."His jaw tightened. I watched him want to push, and I watched him decide not to, and I didn't know which of those two things surprised me more."If it's dangerous," he said quietly, "you'll tell me.""If it's dangerous, I'll tell Okafor."He picked up his folder. He left the croissants. At the door he stopped, the way he'd stopped at my office door four days ago, and spoke without turning around."Eat something," he said. "Please."Then he was gone, and Okafor closed the door behind him and

  • Too Late, Mr. Whitlock: The Heiress He Divorced   The Truce

I didn't sleep. I lay in my childhood bed with the photograph face down on the nightstand and listened to the house settle around me, and a little after one I heard a car on the gravel, and then the gates, and then nothing. At six, I gave up and got dressed.Thomas had the car at the door by six-fifteen without being asked. He looked at my face in the rearview mirror once, the way he'd looked at it the night I left Grant, and turned the radio on low."Somebody came to the house last night," I said, when we were on the highway."Yes, miss.""Who?"Thomas kept his eyes on the road. "A visitor for Mr. Ashcombe, miss. He didn't stay long.""That isn't an answer.""No, miss," Thomas agreed. "It isn't."I let it go. I had enough secrets of my own to carry into Manhattan that morning. I didn't have room for my grandfather's.* * *He was waiting in the lobby on Water Street at seven.
