Too Late, Mr. Whitlock: The Heiress He Divorced のすべてのチャプター: チャプター 1 - チャプター 10

The roast had been resting for forty minutes when I finally admitted Grant wasn't coming home at seven.I'd planned everything around seven. Gravy in the small pan so it wouldn't skin over. Potatoes keeping warm in the low oven. I'd driven all the way to Delgado's on Fifth for the lemon tart he once said tasted like his grandfather's Sundays, and I'd set the table in the dining room we never used, with the wedding china his mother had given us and then complained about at every holiday since, because apparently I put it in the dishwasher wrong.Three years today. Our first anniversary, he'd forgotten until ten at night and then apologized so formally I felt sorry for him. On the second, his assistant sent white roses with a card that said Happy Anniversary, Mrs. Whitlock, as if I were a client he wanted to keep. I kept the card anyway. This year I'd decided not to wait to be remembered. This year I was the one with something to give.No texts. I checked again anyway, then put the phon

Grant read the name a third time. It didn't change.Ashcombe Maritime moved a fifth of the cargo that came through the Atlantic ports. It owned the terminals in Newark and Baltimore, and without them the Atlantic merger died, and so did the two years Grant had put into it. Hector Ashcombe, the founder, was eighty-one. He never gave interviews and he never sold anything. Four years ago his only granddaughter had walked out, and Hector had never said why. The press said he'd cut her off.Grant's analysts had put together a forty-page file on the family in the spring. The section on the granddaughter ran half a page. No photographs since she was fifteen. A first initial, a birth year, and one line at the bottom: Whereabouts unknown. Presumed abroad. She'd been in his kitchen every morning, making his coffee. She'd slept beside him.He stood so fast the chair scraped across the floor. He crossed to the elevator, jabbed the button, and watched the numbers climb back up from the lobby. The

Grant Whitlock watched his side of the table try to work out what to call her.Pell got there first, and failed. "Ms.—""Ashcombe," she said pleasantly. "Chief Executive of Ashcombe Maritime, as of February. My grandfather sends his apologies. He's stepped back from day-to-day operations."She sat. Okafor sat beside her. At the coffee cart, the analyst who'd made the joke about the check had gone the color of the napkins.Grant stood, walked the length of the table, and took his pen back out of her hand. Her fingers didn't touch his. She made sure of it, and so did he."Leah," he said quietly."Mr. Whitlock." She opened her folder. "I've reviewed your proposal for the Newark and Baltimore terminals. It's very thorough. I understand you've been working on it for two years.""I've been trying to reach you.""I know. Eleven times." She didn't look up. "Our gate staff keep excellent records.""I wrote to you.""Six letters." She turned a page. "I have them.""Did you read them?"She didn'

The house still smelled of my grandmother's furniture polish. Lemon and beeswax. She'd been gone eleven years, and the housekeeper still ordered the same tins from the same shop in Hartford, because nobody had ever told her to stop. The iron gates had opened before Thomas even slowed down. In the stone gatehouse, the guard with the grey mustache lifted two fingers from his newspaper, which was as close as he came to a welcome. The drive climbed through bare elms for half a mile, and the house came up at the top of it the way it always had, all grey stone and too many windows, like it was waiting to see what I'd done this time.Thomas took my coat in the front hall. "Mr. Ashcombe is in the greenhouse, miss."Which meant he was in a bad mood. He'd built the glass house on the east lawn the year my grandmother died, and he went there to be alone with the orchids whenever something made him want to fire everyone. I found him in the far corner, sleeves rolled to the elbow, misting a white

Hector Ashcombe is my oldest friend and my oldest enemy, and four years ago he called me in the middle of the night and asked me to do something I've never told anyone.Grant read on.His granddaughter had run away. That much you probably know by now. What you don't know is why she was running, and what she was running from. I'm not going to tell you all of it. Some of it is hers to tell, and some of it is Hector's to confess, and if I've learned anything in eighty-three years it's that you don't steal other people's confessions. But I'll tell you this: someone tried to hurt her. It wasn't Hector. It was someone who didn't want the Ashcombes and the Whitlocks anywhere near each other. Someone who would have been very happy if that girl had disappeared for good.Hector couldn't protect her without bringing her home, and she wouldn't come home. So I gave her a different home. Mine. Yours.I want you to understa
