Isolde set the kitchen roof on fire.

I smelled it before I saw it. Thick, black smoke curled through the rafters, and orange light flickered against the stone walls.

"She is burning us out," Ronan said.

"Of course she is." Brenna did not look up. "She needs the babies under the open sky. A burning roof means we have to run."

"Then we do not run," Kael said.

"Kael." I clutched my son tighter. "The ceiling is on fire."

"I will hold it up with my own hands if I have to."

A burning roof means we have to run." "Then we do not run," Kael said. "Kael." I clutched my son tighter. "The ceiling is on fire." "I will hold it up with my own hands if I have to." "You cannot hold up a roof." "Watch me." I almost laughed. Then pain ripped through my stomach again, so sharp that I screamed into the baby's blanket. "The second one is coming," Brenna said. "Wren, look at me. You push when I say." "Not here!" "There is no other place!" The window shattered. A burning arrow slammed into the table, and flames licked across the wood. Dorian threw himself in through the broken glass, rolled, and came up beating out sparks on his sleeve. "There are forty of them in the court

"Not here," I gasped. "Not now." The second wave hit before I finished. Pain knifed through my stomach and rolled down my spine, and I clawed at Kael's sleeve. He held me up with one arm and kept his sword raised with the other. "Breathe, Wren. Look at me." "I can't. They are coming." "I know. I have you." Around us, the hum grew louder. A dozen torchbearers closed in from the broken gate, Silverfang warriors in grey. Their faces were slack and calm. Their eyes were empty. Isolde walked among them like a queen, trailing one hand across their shoulders. "Isn't it beautiful?" she said. "They all came so willingly." "Those are your own people," Kael snarled. "You are using them." "I am leading them. There is a difference." "Ronan!" Kael roared. "Get her inside!" Ronan dropped Cassian against the well and ran. He caught my other arm, and between them, they half carried me toward the nearest door, the kitchen. Behind us, Isolde clapped her hands once, softly. "Stop them." Torch

Sable?Silence.Sable. Please.Nothing came back. I stood in the burning hall with my hand on my chest, and for the first time in my life, the place where my wolf lived was dark and still."Look down," Odette said softly."What?""Look at your belly, sweet girl."I looked. My cloak had slipped open. Under the thin dress, my stomach was round. Not a little swell, not the soft curve I had felt three days ago. It was full and tight, the belly of a woman five months along."No," I whispered. My hand shook as it pressed against the curve. "That is not possible. I was seven weeks. I am only..."Odette smiled. "The silverroot quiets your wolf, and it wakes the babies. Every night, they grow faster. By tomorrow's dusk, they will be ready.""Ready for what?""To be born."The floor tilted. I gripped the back of the chair so hard that the wood creaked."You are lying.""Feel them, then."A hard little foot struck my ribs from the inside. Then another, in a different place. Two kicks. Strong and

Frostveil was burning, and Cassian was inside it. "We ride now," I said. "Wren, no." Kael was already on his horse, his face streaked with soot. "It could be a trap. Isolde wants you back there." "Odette is in that keep. She has been in my room every night for a week." "Then I will go alone." "You cannot stop me, Kael." "Wren..." "Do you want to argue, or do you want to save him?" He stared at me. Then he held out his hand and pulled me up behind him. "Hold on tight. If I say get off, you get off." "Agreed." "You are lying." "A little," I said. Ronan cursed under his breath. Dorian slapped his horse's flank. We tore down the ridge toward the orange glow. The gate was broken. Smoke rolled through the courtyard in thick grey waves. The east tower was a column of flame, and warriors in Frostveil furs fought in the snow against shapes in grey cloaks. Rogues. Dozens of them. Steel rang. Someone screamed. "Silverfang colors!" Dorian shouted. "Those are Isolde's men!" "Then w

The sword at Ronan's throat did not shake."Dorian," I whispered. "Look at me."His amber eyes stared straight ahead, glassy as river ice. A thin red line was already bleeding on Ronan's neck."He cannot hear you," Isolde said pleasantly. She stepped over the burning scrolls like they were puddles. "He hasn't heard anyone for days. Not since the night he told me where you kept your mother's key.""You were in his head the whole time.""Of course." She smiled. "Do you know how easy it is, Wren? People want to believe a sad girl. It's the simplest spell in the world."Behind her, the fire crackled higher. Elder Maren dragged herself to the wall, coughing, one hand pressed to her side.Kael swayed on his feet. His lips moved. "Wren... run.""Quiet, Kael," Isolde said. She started to hum.The tune crawled into my ears like warm honey. My thoughts slowed. My knees went soft. Beside me, Kael's head dropped, and I heard Ronan gasp as his eyes rolled back.Sable.I hear it, my wolf growled. F

"She was trying to kill you." "Me?" The word came out of me thin and strange. "Kael, I was nineteen. I had never even heard her name." "I know." His voice was shaking. He held the note out to me, and I took it. The handwriting was small and cramped, Maren's. Isolde did not flee. She was banished. The Moon Stone named your true mates the night before the ceremony. Kael, Dorian, Ronan, all three. The name it gave was Wren Ashford. Isolde saw it. She hired rogues to kill the girl before the ceremony could be undone. Kael found the gold and the map in her room. He banished her himself. Then she sang, and all of you forgot. I read it twice. Then I folded it very carefully, because my hands would not stop shaking. "She was never your fated mate," I whispered. "No." Kael's eyes were wet. "She was only the one I chose. And she knew the Moon would take me away from her." "So she waited five years." "And came back to finish it." Neither of us spoke. The frozen mill wheel creaked in th
