Chapter 34

ARIA

He had said it was the best one.

Most people preferred the first. The recognizable one. He had said the third was better, and he had said it the way you said something you meant without thinking about whether it was the right thing to say.

I was still thinking about that when the door at the end of the corridor opened.

Julian came through it with a bouquet in one arm and a small box of chocolates in the other hand.

He was dressed like he had come from a morning meeting, jacket

Chapter 35ARIAWe looked at each other across the corridor.Adrian shifted. "I'll leave," he said. "I'm sorry for the disruption." He addressed it to Julian, not to me, which was the correct instinct and also somehow made everything worse. "It won't happen again."Julian did not acknowledge this. His eyes were still on mine.Adrian walked to the end of the corridor and pushed through the exit door, and then it was just Julian and me and the bouquet sitting on the bench between us.Julian picked up the bouquet. He looked at it for a moment. Then he crossed to the bin near the stage door and dropped it in.The sound it made when it hit the bottom was soft and final. He picked up the chocolate box from where he had set it on the edge of the bench. That went in after it.I watched him do both things and said nothing."I'm going to pick up Eli from daycare," he said, straightening his jacket, his voice back to the careful evenness that w

He was dressed like he had come from a morning meeting, jacket still on, the particular look of a man who had carved time out of a full schedule to appear somewhere because he wanted to.I saw his face change the moment he saw Adrian. It did not change loudly. Julian's face never changed loudly. But I had been watching that face for five years and I knew every variation of its stillness, and what moved across it in that single second before he composed it back to neutral was not pleasant. He stopped walking. His eyes moved from Adrian to me and back."What

  • Too Late: She Is Gone With Your Baby   Chapter 33

Chapter 33ARIAThe next morning's rehearsal ran long.I pushed the program harder than I had planned to, pushing my musicians who were beginning to notice the tension that was building up but said nothing and did as they were told, repeating the music peieve over and over.We ran the final movement four times. After the third, Adaeze caught my eye across the room with an expression that was not concern exactly but was paying close attention. After the fourth, when I called the break, she appeared at my shoulder with two cups of tea from the side table, holding one out to me in the quiet way she did things."Good morning," she said."Was it not good yesterday," I said."Yesterday was excellent," she said. "This morning is different." She sipped her tea and looked out at the rehearsal space where the other musicians were moving around, stretching, talking in small groups. "What's in you this morning is good. I just want to make sure everything is alright, you kind of went hard on every

Chapter 32ARIAI could see Ava's.She was looking at him with something that was not professional one bit, she was looking at him like she was right where she wanted to be, and stood by it.The bell rang for the second half.Julian came back to his seat leaving Ava behind. Ava drifted back into the crowd. Having no other reason to stay. And I stepped away from the wings and went to find my violin.Julian did not mention the conversation afterward. Not in the car on the way back to the hotel. Not when we checked on Eli together. He talked about everything else.He talked about the performance. He talked about the hall, the way the acoustics had carried during the solo set. He was warm and present and said all the right things and I sat beside him and listened and kept my mouth shut about what I had seen,Because what was I going to say. I saw you talking to your investor representative at a professional event. I saw you introduce her to another investor. I saw her expression when sh

Chapter 31ARIAThe charity opera was at the Meridian Hall, the oldest and most beautiful venue in the city. The ceiling was painted, the acoustics were the sort that made every note feel considered, and the audience was exactly the kind that filled seats like that, old money and new influence, people who attended cultural events because they genuinely loved them.We had been preparing the program for two weeks. It was not our usual tour repertoire. The charity committee had requested something specific and I had built the program carefully.I was in the wings twenty minutes before curtain, running a scale quietly in the dark, when Julian appeared. He had flowers. A full arrangement, the kind that took deliberate choosing and not the kind you picked up from a shop near the door on the way in. Deep red, structured, the stems wrapped in dark paper. He held them out with the particular expression he wore when he was doing something that mattered to him and was trying to make it look casu

Chapter 30JULIAN"No," I said. She looked at me with the particular expression of a person who had expected that answer."You were hers," I said. The words came out before I had fully decided to say them, but they were true and I did not take them back. "That's the honest answer, Ava. I'm sorry for it. But you asked me directly and that's the truth. I couldn't have her. She was with Adrian. She was married and unreachable and I had known her since university and I had spent years watching her be somewhere I couldn't get to."She was quiet. Something moved across her face that I recognized as genuine pain and I felt something for it, some old regret, but not enough to change anything."And now you have her," she said."Now I have her," I said. "We're getting married. Whatever this is, whatever you think you're going to accomplish with those photographs, I am asking you to stop. Not as a threat. As someone who knows you well enough to know you are better than this."Something flickered
