Chapter 3ELENAThe taxi smelled like pine air freshener and old leather, and I sat in the back with my hand cradled against my chest, not looking at it.I had looked at it once, back at the office, and that had been enough for me.The blister had spread across the back of my hand, the skin red and bleeding causing pangs of pain every moment as I bit back on my lips to suppress it.I had taken myself to the hospital plenty of times before. Foster care teaches you that early that aside yourself, no one else cares about you. You learn to assess your own injuries, decide whether they are bad enough to say something about, usually decide they are not, and carry on. This was not so different.Except that it was, because Adrian had carried Vivian to an ambulance for a burn smaller than my palm, and I was sitting in the back of a taxi alone, gritting my teeth so hard my jaw ached.Stop. That is not useful right now. I focused on breathing until we pulled up to the emergency entrance.---The

Chapter 5ELENAI sat with that for a moment."Alright." Then I said. His eyes moved over my face. Looking for something, in my face that would give him some sick sign of happiness. I did not let him find it."I'll have Ethan draw up the full paperwork," he said."Fine," I said.He waited, like he expected something more from me. An argument. A question. Tears, maybe.I gave him none of those things. Then Vivian's name appeared on his phone and he glanced at the screen, before a small smile showed on his face.He answered. I watched his face while he listened. I was close enough or the silence in the room was loud enough for me to hear what she was saying on the other end of the call. She wanted him to take her to a concert, the last performance a popular theatre was holding, and it mattered greatly to her.He told her he would be there. Then he looked at me, and the expression on his face was almost apologetic, as he picked his things up."Remember to contact my assistant tomorrow,"

Chapter 7 ARIA The man sitting beside my hospital bed had kind eyes. That was the first thing I noticed about him. Before I had fully understood where I was or what had happened to me. "Hey," he said, leaning forward when he saw me looking at him, trying to picture where I knew him from. "Take it easy. You're alright." I was in a hospital room. Morning light came through the gap in the curtains. The monitor beside me beeped in its steady, indifferent way. "Who are you?" My voice came out rough and unfamiliar to me. Something flickered across his face. "Julian," he said. "Julian Hale. We were at university together." I looked at him and felt no recognition, at all. "I don't remember you," I said. "I know." He said it gently, without surprise. "The doctors say that's to be expected for now. You were in an accident. Your memory—" He paused, chose his words carefully. "It needs time." I looked down at my hands on the blanket. My left hand. There was a tan line on my ring finge

Chapter 9 ADRIAN I had been accustomed to grief, before; I thought I knew how it felt, and what it took out of me, but when Elena died, I realized that there were different ways of grief; in different categories. I was a wreck, I did not leave the house for a week, and stayed in Elena’s room, regretting everything that I had done, this past month, pushing her away, not willing to tell her anything and she assumed that we were done, and now she left and was gone permanently, I refused calls, even from Vivian and my mum, unwilling to speak to anyone. The police in charge of the case, had been working hard, dropping voicemails updating me on any new things that had occured. It has been five days of grief, when my phone was ringing persistently without stopping. It was the officer on duty that day, officer Daro. I hesitantly reached for it, answering the call as I ran my hand through my unshaven beards and spoke, “Officer, I am not in the mood for…” “There is no sign of a body in th
