The gate agent handed Dante's boarding pass back with a smile. He took it without seeing her.

Every word he tried sounded like sorry. In his coat pocket, his fingers closed around a small box. Inside it was her wedding ring. He had carried it every day for five weeks. His phone buzzed. Theo.[She knows you're coming. I told her. Don't be angry. She asked what time you land. That's all she said. But she didn't say no.]Dante stared at the message.A second one came right behind it.[And Dante? When you see her, say something other than sorry. She's heard sorry.]He typed back: [What if I don't kn

"He warned me."Laurent's voice on the phone was strange. Mira had never heard her father sound unsure."Who did?""Dante." A pause. "He called the shop on Monday, before our letter went out. He told me his board had voted to cut the offer. He said he thought the report was fake. He said he thought somebody wanted it stolen."Mira sat down on the edge of her grandmother's bed. Her apron was still tied around her waist. Flour dusted the dark blanket where her hands had been."He didn't know it was us?""No. He said he didn't know why he was calling me. He said he thought our family had something to do with it, and whoever owned that company, he didn't want them hurt by something his family did." Laurent cleared his throat. "He said he was trying to listen. Even to the things nobody was saying."Mira pressed her hand flat against her chest."And then," her father said, "he stood up in their boardroom and asked his own father, in front of every director, who inside the Russo Group we wer

"You're going to get us all arrested."Aldo Ferri said it in a whisper, but the whole room heard. The emergency meeting had broken up in chaos. Directors were shouting into phones in the corridor. Two of them had already walked out.Vittorio stood at the window with his back to all of them.Dante stayed in his seat until the last director left. Then he got up, closed the boardroom door, and turned the lock."Now it's just us," he said. His father didn't turn around."They set a trap," Dante said. "And you walked straight into it. You and whoever you've been paying on the seventh floor.""I don't know what you're talking about.""Celine."Vittorio turned then. His face was calm again. His color had come back. Only his hand, resting on the windowsill, gave him away. The fingers were pressed so hard against the wood that the nails had gone white."I have never paid that woman a cent.""You're lying.""Be careful, son.""Two years ago, you called every bakery in Brookhaven and made sure s

  • Too Late To Love Me    The number

"Three million, eight hundred sixty thousand, four hundred and twelve dollars."Aldo Ferri read the number out loud at the head of the Russo Group boardroom on Monday morning. The directors around the long table nodded. Some of them smiled."Sucre Doré's cash on hand," Ferri said. "To the dollar. Our source is very good. They are in serious trouble. Three banks have turned them down. So the chairman proposes that we cut our offer by forty percent and give them seven days to accept."At the end of the table, Vittorio Russo folded his hands and said nothing. He didn't need to.Dante looked at the number on the page in front of him."Where did it come from?" he said. The room went quiet."We've been over this, Dante," his father said pleasantly."Are you accusing the chairman of something?" asked Grassi, the oldest director, peering over his glasses."I'm asking where a number came from," Dante said. "That used to be allowed in this room.""No. We haven't. Last month you told me you didn

"A trap?"Laurent's face filled the laptop screen, too close to the camera as always. Behind him was the twelfth-floor boardroom."A document," Mira said. "One she'll want to steal. With numbers nobody else has ever seen, because they aren't real."Beside Laurent, Ben Pryce shifted in his seat. The head of the strategy office had gone pale when Laurent told him the truth that morning. That the leak was on his floor. That it had been using his login."She's been using my password?" Pryce had said. "My password?"Now he cleared his throat. "Miss Beaumont. With respect. What kind of numbers?"Mira pulled her notebook toward her. She had been up since five, writing."A crisis," she said. "The kind of news that would make the Russo Group move fast. We say Sucre Doré is short of cash. Very short. We say three banks have turned us down. We say the family is scared and will accept any offer over a certain number within thirty days."Pryce stared at her through the screen. "That would make the

  • Too Late To Love Me    The letters

"Mira, I don't know how to write a letter."Mira read the first line out loud to the empty kitchen. His words sounded strange in her own voice.[I've written contracts. Speeches. Emails to people I don't like. But I've never written a letter to someone I was afraid of losing, so I don't know how. You'll have to forgive how bad this is.]Mira sat at her grandmother's kitchen table with the first letter in both hands.[I tried to write I'm sorry. I wrote it eleven times on the first page. Rosa told me to stop. She said you've heard me say sorry, but you've never heard me say anything else. So I'm going to try to say something else.I remember the harbor festival.I remember you were eleven, and everybody was screaming your name, and I found you under the fish market stairs. You didn't say anything. You just held your arms up. You trusted me to come.I remember carrying you home. You fell asleep on my back before we got to the car. Your hair smelled like cotton candy, and you had fish sc
