Chapter 2

Author: Little Whirlwind
The charity gala took place at the most lavish hotel downtown.

I didn't wear the jewel-encrusted gown that Mark had picked out for me.

Instead, I chose a jet-black dress.

It was the kind of color that was only worn to funerals.

As soon as I walked into the ballroom, the surrounding conversations died down.

Mark was across the room, chatting smoothly with Chloe on his arm.

Chloe wore a fiery red, backless dress that burned like an open flame.

The moment Mark saw me, his smile froze.

He strode over and grabbed my wrist, squeezing hard enough to break bone.

"Sarah, what the hell are you wearing?"

He kept his voice low, but every word dripped with threat.

"I told you this was an important night. I told you to look pretty."

I looked up into his eyes, my expression blank.

"Today marks two months of mourning for Leo. What else should I wear?"

Mark frowned, completely missing my point.

"Mourning? What are you babbling about? Go change right now."

Chloe drifted over, linking her arm tightly through Mark's other side.

"Sarah, black really isn't a good look for an event like this. Did something happen at home?"

She blinked her big, innocent eyes as they dripped with fake concern.

My gaze locked onto the necklace around her throat.

It was a custom sapphire piece.

I had fallen in love with that exact design years ago, planning to save it for Leo's future bride.

"Mr. Sterling," Mark's personal assistant, Daniel, interrupted and stepped between us. "The transfer documents for the amusement park project are ready."

Mark nodded, turning to Chloe with a fond smile.

"Here's the present I promised you, Chloe. The park is yours to run now."

That park was supposed to be Mark's birthday present to Leo.

Leo waited until his final breath, and the ground was never even broken.

Now, it was just a toy to keep his mistress happy.

My heart felt like it was being fed through a shredder.

"Mark, that was meant for Leo," I rasped out, my voice shaking.

Mark glared at me in disgust.

"Leo is just a kid. Why does he need an amusement park? I'll build him a bigger one when he's older."

He scoffed. "Chloe needs a project to manage right now. Can you try being reasonable for once?"

Guests around us began whispering, watching the spectacle unfold.

Some praised Mark's generosity. Others smirked at how pathetic his wife looked.

Nausea rolled through my stomach.

A sharp gleam flashed in Chloe's eyes. Suddenly, her foot buckled.

The wine glass in her hand tilted and she 'accidentally' dumped a full glass of deep red wine right down my dress.

"Ah—!"

Chloe cried out, stumbling backward straight into Mark's chest.

"What happened?" Mark caught her immediately, panic written all over his face. "Chloe, are you hurt?"

Chloe's eyes welled with tears as she cowered in his arms, looking completely wronged.

"Mr. Sterling, don't blame Sarah... I lost my balance. Sarah just didn't want to take the drink I offered... she bumped the glass..."

My hands hadn't even left my sides.

Yet in Mark's eyes, I was already the bitter, malicious villain.

He snapped his head toward me, his glare vicious.

"Sarah! When did you become so unhinged?

"Chloe was just trying to offer you a drink, and you put your hands on her?"

The crowd pressed closer, pointing fingers.

"Is that Mrs. Sterling? Where are her manners?"

"I heard she's a jealous psycho. Guess it's true."

I stood frozen in place.

Dark red wine dripped down the hem of my dress onto the carpet, looking sickeningly like Leo's blood.

And yet, I almost wanted to laugh.

That was when Julian Vance appeared behind me.

"Do you need a hand, Mrs. Sterling?"

Julian Vance was Mark's fiercest rival in the business world.

He offered me a clean silk handkerchief.

I took it and slowly wiped the wine from my hands.

"Mr. Vance," I said softly, looking up. "I need a favor."

Julian raised an eyebrow, a stroke of dark amusement flickering in his eyes.

When the police led Mark away, he didn't scream or make a scene like people do in movies. He just stooped his shoulders, looking ten years older in an instant, as he was escorted into the back of the cruiser. The wail of the sirens faded into the distance, leaving the cemetery quiet once again.I knelt in front of the headstone, gently tracing Leo's photo with my thumb. The plastic frame felt smooth and cold beneath my fingers."Leo, the bad man is gone," I whispered. "Mommy is taking you somewhere new, okay? A place where it doesn't rain all the time, and where no one leaves you waiting."Julian didn't rush me. He closed his umbrella, stepped back a few paces, and lit a cigarette. The soft plume of gray smoke drifted through the damp air, offering a strange sense of comfort. After a long while, I forced myself to stand. My legs had gone numb."Let's go."Julian pinched out his cigarette and walked over, supporting my elbow naturally. "I'll take you back to rest. The lawyers

Early the next morning, inside the Sterling Group headquarters, the moment Mark stepped into the executive suite, he felt something was wrong. The secretaries were whispering among themselves. The second they saw him, they went dead silent, their eyes darting away."Mr. Sterling!"His personal assistant, Daniel, ran up to him, dripping with cold sweat."We have a massive problem. The IRS is in the main conference room demanding a full audit of our books for the past three years. “And agents from the financial crimes division are here. Someone filed a formal report accusing us of money laundering."Mark froze. The despair from the night before was instantly replaced by a sharp alarm."Who filed it?""I don't know, but the evidence they provided is terrifyingly detailed. It even includes... the statement logs for your offshore account."Mark’s face was drained of all colors.Only two people knew about that account. Himself and Sarah. He slammed open his office door and fire

On the other side of town, inside a quiet, low-key bistro, I held a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup, sipping the broth in slow, small mouthfuls.Julian sat across from me, peeling a shrimp with methodical grace before dropping the tender meat into my bowl."Eat up," he said without looking up. "You've lost so much weight that you look like a skeleton.""Thank you." I picked up the shrimp with my fork. "How are things moving along?""The IRS got the files. They'll freeze every single account under Mark's name first thing tomorrow morning. “As for the money laundering evidence, the financial crimes unit is already opening a case."Julian wiped his hands with a napkin and poured himself a cup of tea."Mark just saw what you left behind. I forwarded the security camera feed from your house to your phone. Want to watch?"I shook my head and kept eating."No. It would only pollute my eyes."Julian let out a quiet chuckle. "Fair enough. It is disgusting. But care to guess wh

The rain poured heavily.Mark stood outside the preschool gates, completely soaked. He stared at Mrs. Hayes' pale face. He tried to laugh, but the expression on his face came out twisted and painful."Mrs. Hayes, this is a sick joke. Look, I know Sarah is throwing a fit, but did she tell you to say this? Just to pay me back for missing pick-ups?"He wiped his dripping face, his voice raspy and laced with a desperate threat."You're a teacher. How can you lie like this?"Mrs. Hayes took a step back, looking at him as if he were insane."Mr. Sterling, Leo was hit by a car right outside these gates two months ago. It was pouring just like today. “By the time Mrs. Sterling and the ambulance got here, it was already too late."Her voice trembled, but every word fell with crushing clarity. "The day after, Mrs. Sterling came to withdraw his files. I still have a copy of the death certificate in the office. Do you want to see it?"A sharp ring exploded in Mark's head. The string h

Rain pounded against the window, lightning flashing as thunder rolled across the sky.It rained like this two months ago. The exact same day Leo died.I sat on the living room couch. In front of me lay three signed copies of the divorce papers. My phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was a text from Mark.[Sarah, I've been thinking. I know I haven't been there for you and Leo over the years.][I'm heading to his school right now to pick him up like I promised.][Get dinner ready. Let's have a nice family night, just the three of us.]I stared at the screen, a sick laugh bubbling in my throat.Where was he going to pick him up?Preschool had been out for summer, and Leo’s enrollment had been canceled a long time ago.Mark didn't even notice that his son hadn't spoken a single word to him in two full months.I gripped the phone, listening to the rain outside. My heart was completely dead.Half an hour later, Mark called. His cheerful mood was gone, replaced by growing annoy

Mark didn't come home that night. He finally showed up the next afternoon, reeking of expensive perfume.Maybe he felt guilty about screaming at me in front of everyone the night before. Or maybe his conscience just managed a weak flicker. He was holding a box of my favorite pastries, a rare gesture."Alright, let's forget about last night," he said, taking a seat on the sofa with his usual arrogant tone. "This weekend, I'm taking you and Leo to the coast. “Hasn't he been begging to go whale watching? I chartered a yacht."I was in the bedroom, quietly folding Leo's favorite clothes.Mark pushed the door open, letting in a draft.Leo's framed photo sat on the nightstand. I quickly flipped it face down before he could see it."What are you doing here? The place feels like a crypt," Mark muttered, stepping toward the window to pull back the heavy curtains."Don't touch them!" I screamed, bolting forward to block him.Startled by my sudden outburst, his expression turned foul.
