Chapter 4

Author: Little Whirlwind
Rain pounded against the window, lightning flashing as thunder rolled across the sky.

It rained like this two months ago. The exact same day Leo died.

I sat on the living room couch. In front of me lay three signed copies of the divorce papers.

My phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was a text from Mark.

[Sarah, I've been thinking. I know I haven't been there for you and Leo over the years.]

[I'm heading to his school right now to pick him up like I promised.]

[Get dinner ready. Let's have a nice family night, just the three of us.]

I stared at the screen, a sick laugh bubbling in my throat.

Where was he going to pick him up?

Preschool had been out for summer, and Leo’s enrollment had been canceled a long time ago.

Mark didn't even notice that his son hadn't spoken a single word to him in two full months.

I gripped the phone, listening to the rain outside. My heart was completely dead.

Half an hour later, Mark called.

His cheerful mood was gone, replaced by growing annoyance.

"Sarah, where are you? I'm at the preschool gates, but the place is completely locked up.

"Even the security guard is different. He says he has never heard of Leo Sterling.

"Did you transfer him to another school without telling me? Are you playing games with me?"

Over the receiver, I could hear the steady swish-swish of his windshield wipers.

I could almost picture him sitting in his luxury car, arrogant and impatient.

"Mark," I said softly. "You won't find him there."

"What is that supposed to mean?" His voice spiked. "Can you stop making a scene? I actually showed up this time. What more do you want?

"When I didn't pick him up, you nagged me every single day. Now that I'm here, you pull this disappearing act?"

I looked down at the broken action figure on the table.

"The divorce papers are on the nightstand. I'm leaving."

"Sarah! Explain yourself right now! Where is our son?"

I hung up without another word and blocked his number.

Grabbing my suitcase, I walked out into the pouring rain.

The mansion where I had lived for five years loomed in the dark, twisted and ugly.

It looked like a giant tomb, one that buried my entire youth, along with my son's life.

A black sedan pulled up right on cue.

Julian rolled down the window, looking at me drenched in the rain.

"Ready to leave all this behind?"

I opened the door and got in, never once looking back.

"There's nothing left to hold onto. Do you have what I asked for?"

Julian picked up a heavy folder from the passenger seat and handed it over.

"This contains the original records of Mark's tax fraud, along with proof of his money laundering through shell corporations."

He paused, his dark eyes sharp.

"Once this reaches the authorities, Mark will spend the rest of his life behind bars."

My fingers trembled slightly as I flipped through the documents.

"Thank you."

---

Back at the preschool gate, Leo's former teacher, Mrs. Hayes, stepped out under an umbrella.

She froze when she saw Mark standing in the downpour.

"Mr. Sterling? What are you doing here?"

Mark wiped the rainwater from his face. "I came to pick up Leo."

Mrs. Hayes stood in the rain, her face turning pale.

She stared at him, her eyes filled with shock and disbelief.

"Mr. Sterling..." Her voice trembled against the sound of the storm. "You... you don't know?"

"Know what?" Mark snapped, stepping closer.

Mrs. Hayes took a deep breath, looking at him with pure horror.

"Leo... died in a car accident two months ago."

Thunder crashed overhead.

Mark froze like a statue.

When the police led Mark away, he didn't scream or make a scene like people do in movies. He just stooped his shoulders, looking ten years older in an instant, as he was escorted into the back of the cruiser. The wail of the sirens faded into the distance, leaving the cemetery quiet once again.I knelt in front of the headstone, gently tracing Leo's photo with my thumb. The plastic frame felt smooth and cold beneath my fingers."Leo, the bad man is gone," I whispered. "Mommy is taking you somewhere new, okay? A place where it doesn't rain all the time, and where no one leaves you waiting."Julian didn't rush me. He closed his umbrella, stepped back a few paces, and lit a cigarette. The soft plume of gray smoke drifted through the damp air, offering a strange sense of comfort. After a long while, I forced myself to stand. My legs had gone numb."Let's go."Julian pinched out his cigarette and walked over, supporting my elbow naturally. "I'll take you back to rest. The lawyers

Early the next morning, inside the Sterling Group headquarters, the moment Mark stepped into the executive suite, he felt something was wrong. The secretaries were whispering among themselves. The second they saw him, they went dead silent, their eyes darting away."Mr. Sterling!"His personal assistant, Daniel, ran up to him, dripping with cold sweat."We have a massive problem. The IRS is in the main conference room demanding a full audit of our books for the past three years. “And agents from the financial crimes division are here. Someone filed a formal report accusing us of money laundering."Mark froze. The despair from the night before was instantly replaced by a sharp alarm."Who filed it?""I don't know, but the evidence they provided is terrifyingly detailed. It even includes... the statement logs for your offshore account."Mark’s face was drained of all colors.Only two people knew about that account. Himself and Sarah. He slammed open his office door and fire

On the other side of town, inside a quiet, low-key bistro, I held a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup, sipping the broth in slow, small mouthfuls.Julian sat across from me, peeling a shrimp with methodical grace before dropping the tender meat into my bowl."Eat up," he said without looking up. "You've lost so much weight that you look like a skeleton.""Thank you." I picked up the shrimp with my fork. "How are things moving along?""The IRS got the files. They'll freeze every single account under Mark's name first thing tomorrow morning. “As for the money laundering evidence, the financial crimes unit is already opening a case."Julian wiped his hands with a napkin and poured himself a cup of tea."Mark just saw what you left behind. I forwarded the security camera feed from your house to your phone. Want to watch?"I shook my head and kept eating."No. It would only pollute my eyes."Julian let out a quiet chuckle. "Fair enough. It is disgusting. But care to guess wh

The rain poured heavily.Mark stood outside the preschool gates, completely soaked. He stared at Mrs. Hayes' pale face. He tried to laugh, but the expression on his face came out twisted and painful."Mrs. Hayes, this is a sick joke. Look, I know Sarah is throwing a fit, but did she tell you to say this? Just to pay me back for missing pick-ups?"He wiped his dripping face, his voice raspy and laced with a desperate threat."You're a teacher. How can you lie like this?"Mrs. Hayes took a step back, looking at him as if he were insane."Mr. Sterling, Leo was hit by a car right outside these gates two months ago. It was pouring just like today. “By the time Mrs. Sterling and the ambulance got here, it was already too late."Her voice trembled, but every word fell with crushing clarity. "The day after, Mrs. Sterling came to withdraw his files. I still have a copy of the death certificate in the office. Do you want to see it?"A sharp ring exploded in Mark's head. The string h

Mark didn't come home that night. He finally showed up the next afternoon, reeking of expensive perfume.Maybe he felt guilty about screaming at me in front of everyone the night before. Or maybe his conscience just managed a weak flicker. He was holding a box of my favorite pastries, a rare gesture."Alright, let's forget about last night," he said, taking a seat on the sofa with his usual arrogant tone. "This weekend, I'm taking you and Leo to the coast. “Hasn't he been begging to go whale watching? I chartered a yacht."I was in the bedroom, quietly folding Leo's favorite clothes.Mark pushed the door open, letting in a draft.Leo's framed photo sat on the nightstand. I quickly flipped it face down before he could see it."What are you doing here? The place feels like a crypt," Mark muttered, stepping toward the window to pull back the heavy curtains."Don't touch them!" I screamed, bolting forward to block him.Startled by my sudden outburst, his expression turned foul.
