Chapter 2

Author: Lucky Elements
With a click, the living room lights went out.

I hurriedly floated inside and saw Mommy in the bedroom's warm yellow light.

She had a sheet mask on and was feeding Timmy with a bottle.

I moved closer and tried to gently tug at her sleeve. "Mommy, I was wrong. I'll never get carsick again."

But my hand passed right through her sleeve and grabbed nothing.

After making sure Timmy had finished his milk and fallen asleep, Mom got up. She went to the window to pull back the curtain, and then she looked out into the yard.

When she saw that the car was quiet and still, Mom muttered under her breath, "That brat Zoe is such a handful. I need to discipline her later."

With that, she lay back down beside Timmy and turned off the small lamp in the bedroom.

The whole house fell dark.

I wanted to curl up in Mom's arms and fall asleep, just like I had before Timmy was born.

But when I saw the stains on my clothes, I was afraid of upsetting her again.

So I curled up on the rug beside the bed, close enough for Mommy to touch me if she lowered her hand.

"Good night, Mommy," I muttered.

Mommy, Daddy, and Timmy slept soundly.

But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't fall asleep.

The floor was cold at night, and the chill seeped into my body. I lay there with my eyes open, counting star after star outside the window.

I assumed that once morning came, Mommy and Daddy would come get me.

I thought about how I would never upset Mommy again. I'd be her best-behaved child.

I waited like that for who knew how long, until the sky outside slowly grew bright.

Timmy's loud cries woke Mommy and Daddy.

I followed them as they hurried around early in the morning, taking care of Timmy. By the time they were done, it was almost 9:00 am.

Mommy and Daddy got ready to take Timmy to his baby development class.

When they saw the car in the yard, they seemed to remember something.

I floated nearby, filled with hope. They were finally going to bring me home.

But when Daddy stepped into the yard and saw no one through the rear window, he froze for a moment.

"Honey, isn't Zoe in the car?"

Hearing him, Mom came out with Timmy in her arms. She frowned at the car, which gave off a faint, foul smell.

"Where else could she be? Look again. It stinks. I'm not going over there."

Daddy walked over, leaned against the window, and squinted inside. Only yesterday's dried vomit remained on the back seat. There was nothing else.

He didn't know that my body had already slipped off the seat and curled up on the floor mat beneath it.

Daddy couldn't see me in the corner through the tinted window. He frowned and reached for the door handle.

But the moment his fingers touched it, Timmy started screaming behind him.

"Daddy! Daddy, carry!" Timmy's face was red from crying, and he stretched his little arms toward Daddy.

Daddy paused.

He glanced through the window again, looking around without much care. Once he was sure no one was inside, he turned and hurried back to comfort Timmy.

"I'm here!"

I floated where I was and opened my mouth.

Why didn't Daddy open the door?

If he opened it, he'd see me right there.

I wanted him to hold me, too.

But Daddy couldn't hear me. He walked over to Mommy, took Timmy in his arms, and gently soothed him.

Mom stood nearby, growing angrier by the second.

"That little brat! How dare she run away without a word after doing something wrong? My mom must have come and taken her away last night. Go ahead and spoil Zoe. She'll just get worse!"

My nose suddenly burned. I wanted to cry, but no tears came.

I muttered, "Mommy, I didn't run away. I'm right here in the car!"

I floated over to Mommy and Daddy and shouted at them, but they ignored me.

I watched helplessly as they left the yard with Timmy in their arms.

My chest hurt so badly that I could barely bear it.

-

By the time Mommy came back with Timmy, it was almost noon.

As soon as she stepped inside, my maternal grandmother, Marsha Grant, called.

"Where's Zoe? Has something happened to her? I've had this awful feeling all morning. Something just doesn't feel right."

But Mommy cut her off harshly. "Mom, stop pretending. Didn't you take Zoe home with you?

"What? I didn't pick Zoe up. She's not here." Grandma's voice turned frantic.

"You're still keeping up the act?" Mommy hung up without hesitation and immediately blocked Grandma's number.

"She still insists on spoiling her, right?" Mommy said to herself angrily. "Fine! She can take Zoe and raise her herself. Then I won't have to look at Zoe and get annoyed!"

Watching how Mommy behaved, I began to tremble.

I whispered, "Mommy, does this mean I can't come home anymore?"

Time flew by, and soon it was the day of the trial. All this time, I still couldn't leave. It was as if something were holding me here.Maybe today was the day I could finally leave. In court, Mommy and Daddy had grown so thin they were almost unrecognizable. Most of their hair had turned gray, and they looked at least ten years older. They didn't hire lawyers to put up much of a defense. As the judge read out the cold, cruel details of the case, sobs and muffled curses rose from the gallery."Defendants Jim Yarnell and Lena Whitmore, through negligence and loss of emotional control, left their daughter, Zoe Yarnell, locked inside a closed vehicle for nearly 24 hours. This caused Zoe to die from severe heatstroke and suffocation. Defendants, do you dispute the facts of the charges brought against you?"Mommy slowly raised her head. Her eyes were terrifyingly empty of emotion. "No. I plead guilty."Daddy shook his head through his tears. The final verdict was announced. Because

I turned and floated out, heading to Mommy's interrogation room.Mommy was in even worse shape. She curled up in her chair, looking like she had lost her mind.A female officer was taking her statement. "The lab has confirmed that the foreign objects in the formula canister were rat droppings. Why did you immediately assume the victim was trying to hurt your son? Why did you call Zoe a rotten child without even checking the facts?"Mommy went rigid at the words "rotten child".It was as if all her strength suddenly left her. She collapsed onto the table and burst into tears."I don't know. I really don't! Ever since Timmy was born, I've felt sad and irritable all the time. Sometimes, Zoe would make Timmy cry, and I thought she was doing it on purpose. So I…" Mommy sobbed. "I know I was wrong now."Mommy cried so hard she could barely breathe. Tears and snot ran down her face. She looked miserable.I floated in the air.I thought I was already numb to everything, but hearing M

The police car sirens drew the attention of the whole street.Neighbors gathered in crowds, packed around the yard's gate as they tried to see what was happening inside."What happened? Did someone die?""I heard the Yarnell family's daughter died. She suffocated in the car.""Oh, what a tragedy. I've seen that girl before. She was so sweet and always greeted people.""She was so young, too. Ever since Mr. and Mrs. Yarnell had another child, I felt like they treated their daughter like she was nothing. They even sent her to live in the countryside.""Hush. Keep your voice down. They're grieving.""Grieving? Where was that concern before?"The crowd buzzed with gossip.Just as the police led Mommy and Daddy out through the gate of the yard, a young man pushed his way to the front of the crowd with his phone held up.His screen was lit up. He was livestreaming. The title read, "Heartless Parents Left Their Daughter to Die in a Hot Car. Live Footage."The chat was scrolling by

"Zoe!" Mommy screamed and rushed forward, shoving the car washer aside. She reached out to pick me up, but when she touched my stiff shoulder, her hand shook. The next moment, she didn't hesitate and pulled my body into her arms.Blood from my wounds smeared across her clothes, but she didn't care. The dried vomit on my dress rubbed against her chest, but she ignored that too."Zoe… Zoe, please wake up."I floated numbly in the air.For some reason, resentment slowly began to grow inside me.Didn't Mommy always say she couldn't stand anything dirty? But now… Why didn't she find me filthy? Back then, she just didn't want to love me anymore, did she?As Mommy cried, her tears fell onto my clothes. But when she got a good look at my face, she let out a horrifying scream.Part of my nose was missing, and a piece of my ear was gone. There were wounds all over my body, all from the rat biting me.The next moment, Mommy broke down and almost sobbed herself unconscious."Zoe! My

Daddy opened the gate to the yard.Grandma stood outside with mud on her pant legs, messy hair, and sweat covering her face. After her phone call with Mommy, she couldn't stop worrying. She had spent six hours traveling from the countryside to get here."Where's Zoe?" Grandma was breathing hard.As soon as she entered, she searched the house. "Where's my Zoe?"Mommy held Timmy, looking annoyed. "Mom, stop pretending. Didn't you take Zoe home with you? Why are you here?""When did I ever take her?" Grandma grew frantic. "When I called to ask about Zoe, you told me she wasn't home. I got so worried that I came straight here.""Yeah, right!" Mommy curled her lip. "Who else could it have been? You just keep spoiling her. That little brat went out of her way to make me angry. She even put modeling clay in Timmy's formula. What if he had swallowed some? She's just a rotten child who wants to kill my son. I'll never let her get away with it!"Grandma's face went pale. "What did you

Mommy hung up, still breathing hard with anger.Suddenly, her eyes fell on the car in the yard.I followed her gaze. A huge gray rat was slowly crawling into the car through an opening in the AC duct underneath it.Mommy screamed loudly, her face turning pale. I remembered Mommy telling me that a rat had bitten her when she was little. She hated rats more than anything. So Mommy rushed to the corner of the yard, grabbed a broom, and tried to chase it away."Get out! Get out of there! You're filthy!"She jabbed the broom under the car.The frightened rat squeaked, and instead of running away, it darted straight into the car.Mommy watched the rat disappear inside and stamped her feet in anger."This car is ruined! First the vomit, now a rat! It's absolutely filthy!"She threw the broom aside in disgust. But I froze. The rat…went into the car?But my body was still in there!"Mommy! Mommy, help me!" I desperately floated toward her. "Don't let the rat bite me. I'm so scared
