Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
Zoe took me out for drinks.

She and Lucas were starting wedding prep soon, and she wanted one last chance to relax before things got busy.

A completely wholesome kind of relaxing.

She got drunk fast, but still insisted on taking me home first.

I laughed, but my chest ached a little too. Even drunk, my best friend was still thinking about me first.

Felix would always choose Lacey over me.

I comforted her. "I'm staying at your place anyway. We'll just go home together."

I had moved out of Felix's place a few days earlier to sort through our relationship. Lucas happened to be away on a business trip, so Zoe asked me to stay with her for the last few days of her single life.

When we got home, I carried her onto the couch. She mumbled vaguely into the cushion.

"Sara... if something's broken, throw it away. Don't force yourself to hold onto it."

Zoe and I had known each other for over ten years. Even when I said nothing, she could still tell how conflicted I was.

I smiled and rubbed her hair gently.

Just then, a message came in from Felix.

[Done being mad yet? When are you coming back?]

[Come back and I'll take you to that Sichuan place, okay?]

[You're an adult. Every time you're unhappy, you disappear. Do you really think that's mature?]

For the first time, I did not reply to him.

Lucas came back from his business trip. I was planning to leave since it was not convenient for me to keep staying there.

However, Zoe insisted I stay and sent Lucas back to his parents' house instead.

Lucas looked helpless, but indulgent as always. He agreed and even asked me to take good care of her.

I felt bad about it, but Zoe waved it off casually. "It's fine. Stay as long as you want."

A couple days later, she told me one of Lucas's college friends had returned from overseas to visit family. Lucas had organized a gathering, with both men and women attending.

She wanted me to come too.

I knew she was worried I'd stay trapped in my emotions and never pull myself out.

So during the days I stayed at her place, she spent almost all her free time with me.

I agreed. A change of scenery might do me good.

The gathering was held at an upscale private club that Lucas partly owned.

That was where I met the friend he was hosting this time–Cooper Wells.

He wore gold-rimmed glasses and looked refined and scholarly.

However, unlike his appearance suggested, he was actually fun and easygoing. With him around, the atmosphere never once turned awkward.

Everyone had a great time.

During the conversation, I learned that despite coming from a wealthy family, Cooper had started his own business. In just a few years, his company had already gone public.

At the end of the night, he asked to add me on Facebook.

I looked at him in surprise, suddenly feeling awkward.

No matter what, Felix and I still had not officially broken up.

Cooper smiled. "Don't misunderstand. Zoe showed me some of your work before. I think your designs are both polished and full of creativity. I just wanted to ask if you'd ever considered changing work environments."

I looked at Zoe. She shrugged.

"I only showed him your work. What you want to do is still up to you.

"But I think you should at least add him first. You can always decide later."

I had to admit, at that moment, I was tempted.

So I added him.

"Sara!"

I turned around and saw Felix standing there, fury written across his face.

I had gone through all of that, and I had still stayed with him until now.Hadn't I already given him enough chances?I smiled faintly."Let's end things properly, Felix."Before he could respond, I hung up and blocked every way he could contact me.…Before I left the country, Zoe and Lucas held their wedding. In truth, it had been less than three months since Lucas proposed. Normally, that would have been a tight timeline for a wedding. However, Lucas had already prepared most of it before the proposal ever happened.Zoe laughed and asked him, "What if I had said no to your proposal? What would've you done then?"Lucas answered honestly, "Then I would've kept waiting. I'd wait for you forever."Even Zoe, who was usually playful, ended up crying at that.I watched the couple exchange their vows onstage. I thought about how they had met and fallen in love, and then I thought about everything Felix and I had gone through together. At least my friend still got her happy endi

I don't know how Felix found out, but on the fifth day, Lacey deleted all those posts from her feed. Then I got a text from a number I didn't recognize.[Why won't you let go?]As if I were the one refusing to let go.I smiled helplessly, but I also knew it was time to have a proper ending with Felix.I sent him a message, seriously asking if we could sit down and talk.He replied several hours later.[I have a business trip these next few days. We'll talk when I'm back, sweetheart!]As if avoiding it would somehow stop us from breaking up.I did not indulge him this time. I replied:[Running away won't help, Felix. If you don't want to talk, that's fine. But I'm not going to put my life on hold and wait for you indefinitely.]This time, he sent a voice message directly."I'm really on a business trip, sweetheart. Lacey isn't here with me. Trust me. Can we talk when I get back? Please.""I'll change. I really will."I listened to the trembling emotion in his voice and fel

He stiffened. He probably remembered the night I was thinking of.That night he had been in the shower. His phone rang. I had not planned to answer, but it kept ringing. I thought I would just tell whoever it was that he was unavailable.I picked it up. The contact name on the screen was 'Lacey.'He came out of the bathroom and snatched it out of my hand.He accused me of not trusting him. Of invading his privacy. After that night, he deleted my fingerprint and changed the passcode.I took my phone back and walked past him into the master bedroom, pulling my pillow and blanket out.He saw what I was doing and strode over."What are you doing?""I've got some things on my mind. I'm sleeping in the guest room tonight. I won't bother you."His lips tightened."So now you don't even want to sleep in the same bed with me?"I stayed silent. He walked past me into the master bedroom and slammed the door shut.I shook my head and went to the guest room.I had just finished layin

He came at me. He grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward him.I tapped accept on the contact, then shook his hand off.He stared at me and let out a cold laugh. "I assumed you were home cooling off and reflecting, so I didn't bother you too much. Looks like I really was bothering you.""Sara, how can you do this?"Lacey appeared at his shoulder. "Felix has been so worried about you these last few days."Of course she was here. The look on my face must have shifted, because Felix's voice went hard."Lacey and I were here meeting with a client. Unlike you..."Zoe cut in. "Watch your mouth, Felix. Sara is here with us. What's the problem?"He turned on Lucas. "Lucas, we've known each other a long time. You knew where she was and didn't tell me? You let me worry for days?"Lucas looked innocent enough. "I was on a business trip. I only found out after I came back."Zoe stepped in coldly. "And what exactly were you worried about? Sara's been gone for days. I didn't see you calling

In the morning, a message came through.[Lacey's place lost power last night. I helped her until late. Didn't want to wake you, so I stayed in a hotel. Not at her place.]He had always been frank like this. He never avoided mentioning Lacey in front of me.He believed that as long as he explained himself clearly, there was no problem.Another message popped up.[I booked that restaurant you've been wanting to try. Dinner tonight.]This was his usual way of handling things. An explanation, followed by a piece of candy. Whether I accepted it or not, he would automatically consider the matter settled. As long as he thought he'd explained himself, then I wasn't supposed to stay upset. The few times I could not take it anymore and tried to talk things through, the look in his eyes was always the same–as if I was being unreasonable. So most of the time, I swallowed my grievances and pretended to be mature and understanding just to keep him happy.I replied: [Okay.]Felix could ha
