Chapter 415

Author: Arlo Drake
Joseph got drunk fast. One minute he was hugging his beer bottle and mumbling nonsense, the next he was belting out a song like he was auditioning for a musical.

Lauren hadn't expected his tolerance to be this tragic. Worried he'd start doing something embarrassing in public next, she flagged down a cab and hauled him home.

His place was only a few blocks away—one of those fancy, oversized apartments the Collinsworths had gifted him when he started his company. It was sleek, modern, and over 1,400 square feet.

Capitalist scum, Lauren thought as she dragged him in like a sack of flour. She'd been here before, so she knew the address. She used his fingerprint to unlock the door and shoved him onto the couch.

"Why are you so heavy?" she groaned. "You don't look heavy."

"Of course I'm heavy. I work out. It's all muscle," he mumbled from the couch.

Lauren turned around. "You're sober?"

"Sober? I'm just stating the facts. I'm not fat, I'm ripped," Joseph said.

"Sure you are," she sai

Serena had dinner with Wilson before returning to her apartment. The moment they stepped inside, things quickly got out of hand. One thing led to another, and neither of them could stop.He pinned her against the windowsill, his body pressing close, powerful muscles shifting beneath his skin. Her slender, pale hands scrambled for a grip, occasionally tightening and leaving faint red marks down his back.Wilson glanced up, a smirk tugging at his lips. "I'm starting to think you gave birth to Bingo yourself.""What does that even mean?" Serena asked, confused."You're just as clingy as a cat," he teased.Flushed and annoyed, Serena bit his shoulder. "This is all your fault…""Yes, it's all my fault." Wilson chuckled low, gripping her waist and diving back in.They moved from the windowsill to the bed, then to the bathroom. Cramped together in the tiny space, Wilson accidentally knocked into a shelf, sending things clattering to the floor."This place is way too small," he mutter

"Think about it. Joseph is good-looking, comes from a decent family, and he's actually not a bad person. I grew up with him. I know him pretty well. Sure, he can be unreliable sometimes, but deep down, he's kind and responsible," Serena said, laying it all out.Lauren took a breath and tried to calm herself. Serena's words made sense. "But I've always seen him as a friend. I never thought he'd like me," she muttered.Serena couldn't help laughing. She was probably the only one who didn't see it coming. Anyone could tell just from the way Joseph looked at her. "You're amazing. Of course, he likes you. But don't overthink it. If you don't feel the same, just tell him so.""Oh, I've turned down plenty of guys before. But this one really got to me. I'm still kinda freaked out," Lauren said, rubbing her face. "Ugh, I can't get distracted by boy problems!""Then stop thinking about it and go take a shower. Sleep it off," Serena suggested. At that, Lauren's eyes lit up. "Rina, we haven't

"Got it." Trevor glanced at Wilson, a faint smile flickering in his eyes. "Gary, that old fox just couldn't sit still, huh? But once he goes down, they'll trace everything back. Some of your business might take a hit too. You're not worried about losing money?""Some things need to end. Now's as good a time as any," Wilson replied calmly."You're really going to walk away from money?" Trevor raised an eyebrow."Can't help it. I come from a strict household. My girlfriend doesn't like me dabbling in that kind of business," Wilson said nonchalantly.Trevor's smile disappeared.Seriously? Wilson could be so corny. They continued drinking, and the conversation began to flow more freely. The club owner took his shot. "Mr. Quade, Mr. Stone. If you're feeling tired, I've got a presidential suite upstairs. Everything's taken care of—why not head up and relax?"His implication couldn't have been clearer. He just wanted to please the two big shots. But as soon as the words left his mouth

Serena hesitated for a second, the words caught in her throat. On stage, the lead singer crooked a finger at her, beckoning.Lauren nudged her excitedly. "Look at him! Acting like a peacock showing off. Come on, Rina, shout something—for your bestie's sake!"Serena had no way out. She gave in and yelled, "You're so hot!" Her face instantly turned red.But once the first shout was out, the second wasn't so hard. Emboldened by alcohol, she waved her hands and shouted louder, "You're so hot! Do it again!"The guys on stage turned up the heat. Serena got caught in the moment, jumping and cheering—until she suddenly noticed the crowd noise had dimmed. Confused, she was about to look around when a hand slid around her waist from behind.A deep, magnetic voice whispered in her ear. "Well, well. This pretty girl looks an awful lot like my girlfriend—the one who's supposed to be at home, in bed, sleeping."Her whole body froze. The alcohol-fueled buzz vanished in an instant. No way. Th

They said the bull tires out, not the field. But this field was about done. Serena slept like a log until noon the next day. While Wilson was in the shower, Serena called Lauren. "Laurie.""Damn, you sound wrecked. What happened to you last night?" Lauren asked."You're really asking?" Serena replied flatly."How long did he go at it?" Lauren asked. There was a moment of silence. Then Serena finally muttered two words. "All night.""Holy shit! That man's got the strength of ten bulls. If he's that energetic, maybe he should come plow two acres at my grandma's!" Lauren said. Then, in a more apologetic tone, "Rina, it's all my fault. Wilson's such a brute. He should've been gentler with a woman like you…""I'm fine. Anyway, what about you and Joseph? Have you figured out how to turn him down yet?" Serena asked.Lauren sighed. "I'm planning to quit. There's no way I can keep seeing him every day. It's just too awkward.""Alright. Handle it however you see fit," Serena said.A

After a long pause, Lauren finally asked, "Why did you watch the security footage? Did you think I'd steal something from your place?""I woke up this morning on the living room floor and thought it was weird, so I checked the footage. Is that a crime now?" Joseph asked."So… you saw everything?" Lauren asked softly.Joseph blinked innocently. "Saw what? You mean the part where I kissed you?"She covered her face and waved her hand. "Forget it. I know you were drunk. Let's just pretend that never happened…"However, Joseph had no interest in pretending. "Lauren, I already said it last night, but I'll say it again. "I meant it. I like you. I don't even know when it started, but you're not like the others. I started this company because you encouraged me. I wanted to make it work because I wanted your approval. "This is the first time I've fallen for someone this hard. Can you give me a chance?"Lauren's eyes flickered, her thoughts a mess. She was not ready for them to get int

By the time Lauren felt her lips start to go numb, Joseph finally pulled away.He braced himself with both hands on either side of her, his eyes still dark with unspent desire. "You done yelling now?" he asked, voice low and hoarse."Get lost!" Lauren shoved him hard, then sat up and tugged at her clothes. "Are you part dog or something? My lips are practically torn up!"He got up from the floor. "Didn't look like you were complaining just now."Lauren froze. She hated to admit it, but it hadn't been bad at all. She had even kind of lost herself in it. If he hadn't stopped when he did, she might've really done it with him right there on the couch. However, pride was a hell of a thing. "So what? You didn't enjoy it?""Yeah, I did…" His eyes locked on her like a hungry wolf. They stared at each other in silence. Then, without warning, Joseph lunged again. The two of them tangled together and kissed wildly.Lauren's fingers instinctively slid across his abs.Joseph let out a low

There was still no answer. "What's going on with Lo? Why won't she pick up her phone? Honey, is something wrong?"Before Carmen could say more, Ronald's hand shot out. He seized her phone and smashed it violently against the floor.Carmen shrieked in shock. "Honey, what happened?""It's all because of your perfect daughter!" he roared, slapping her hard across the face.Carmen stumbled backward, clutching her cheek as tears welled in her eyes. "What… What did I do? What are you talking about?""Willow, your precious daughter, teamed up with that bastard Arthur to screw me over! The project he handed to me was a damn scam. It just got shut down by the authorities. Do you even know how much money I've lost?" Ronald snapped."Arthur… scammed you?" Carmen was in disbelief."He said it was a prime piece of land with a great location, perfect for a wellness retreat, full of natural resources… and it turned out to be nothing but a fantasy!" Ronald was practically roaring at this point.

Jillian's answer was savage. "I, for one, am relieved that I did not invest in Desiree's studio. She has blood on her hands and has committed so many unspeakable crimes. If I'd been affiliated with her studio, it would have shaved years off my life!"Desiree argued angrily, "Those are rumors, Grandma! Serena was trying to launch a smear campaign against me!""I can judge whether it was a smear campaign or not! Now, you will stop the damage you've done to Serena's patisserie, and that's final!" Jillian snapped."No way!" Desiree refused outright. "I want nothing more than to see that bitch dead! I will never help her clear her name!"Looking thunderous, Jillian stood up and slapped Desiree hard across the face. An angry hand imprint formed on Desiree's snow-white cheek, and she fell into a daze.Gary was apoplectic. "Mom! What are you doing? You just hit your granddaughter!""I have no granddaughter as wicked and vile as her!" Jillian seethed."You've crossed the line! I'll—"Be

Following her recent scandal, Desiree had confined herself within the villa. While nursing her bruised ego, she plotted against Serena. The media outlets she'd hired to write vicious articles about Serena were silenced. It wasn't hard to figure out Wilson was behind the gag order. Did he truly care about Serena that much? Desiree frowned. She was trying to devise new ways to torment Serena when she heard the maid say they had a guest."What guest?" No one had bothered coming to see Desiree since her fall from grace. Serena uttered, "Wilson?""Do you need help?" Wilson asked.Serena admitted reluctantly, "Yes."She thought she heard him chuckle on the other end of the line. "Send me the address."She sent him the address of the fruit shop. Within 20 minutes, the rumbling sound of the car engine came from outside the shop.Wilson led his men into the establishment, rolling up the sleeves of his black shirt to reveal his expensive watch. His gaze swept over the people in the room before falling on the deliveryman."Is that the guy?" Wilson asked.Serena nodded. "Yes, but we can't get anything out of him. He insists that it's a personal grudge against the shopowner.""Leave the interrogating to the professionals, Serena," Wilson drawled as he gave Kayden a look. The latter got the hint and immediately dragged the deliveryman to the other side of the room.Serena asked in hushed tones, "You're not going to kill him or anything, are you?""Am I that cruel?" Wilson quipped.Serena eyed him spe

Joanna had only just made the announcement when a few uniformed officers entered the kitchen. After presenting their warrant, they informed Serena they had come to investigate her patisserie.Serena had no grounds to obstruct the officers' work, so she agreed. The officers took a few ingredient samples and looked into the hygiene conditions of the patisserie."The results should be out soon, Ms. Judd. Wait for our notice," one of the officers said."Alright."When Serena had seen the officers out the door, she stopped all business sales in the patisserie. She also took a few ingredient samples to have them tested.Joanna was distressed. "Our ingredients are fine, Serena. What are you worried about?""We can't be too certain," Serena pointed out.Whoever was behind this wouldn't have stirred up this much trouble without laying the groundwork. Serena figured she was better off safe than sorry. She didn't have any connections to ensure a rapid testing of the ingredients, so she we

Jessica waited until Justin left before turning to Lila. "What's your relationship with Mr. Farrow?""I'm indebted to him," Lila said."Look, I don't care how you managed to bewitch Mr. Farrow, but I expect you to do a good job as my assistant. I won't go easy on you just because you're involved with Mr. Farrow, got it?" Jessica warned."Yes. Uh, Ms. Hayes, is there any work you'd like me to do now?" Lila asked."You can start with tidying up my workdesk.""Alright." Lila immediately went over to the desk and got to work.A smile curved Jessica's lips. She might not have been able to boss Serena around, but she doubted Lila was a tough opponent. "When you're done with the workdesk, get me a cup of coffee.""Got it," Lila replied dutifully.Jessica was pleased by Lila's obedience and turned to walk away. While tidying up Jessica's desk, Lila spotted the docket set on one side. It contained a thick tender proposal. She stared at the proposal for a few seconds, then looked away.

After leaving the restaurant, Justin gave Lila a ride back to her place, which she rented. Upon entering the residential area, he remarked, "This neighborhood looks old and run-down. You should move someplace nicer."Lila replied slowly, "I should, but first, I need a new job."When Justin heard this, he was suddenly reminded of something. "Your manager mentioned you were in college, but then you quit halfway and started working at the club because you were in dire straits. Which college did you go to?""I was a student at Nocturna University, the local campus," Lila answered."That's a pretty good university." Justin was a little stunned. This was the first time he'd asked about her private life, and her answer surprised him. After some thought, he offered, "You should go back to college. I'll continue to sponsor you.""Really?" Lila's eyes lit up. "Thank you, Mr. Farrow—""Stop thanking me. You were supposed to have a brilliant life full of experiences, and you shouldn't waste

Justin was seated at a table in a high-end restaurant in Nocturna as he stared at the phone in his hand. The news about Ronald was displayed on the screen.Surprised that Ronald had been imprisoned, Justin read the article carefully, then closed the page. The Quades' affairs were none of his concern. With his company recently gearing up to bid on a large project, he'd painstakingly drafted the tender proposal and planned to submit it for the bidding."Aren't you going to eat, Mr. Farrow?" Lila asked softly from across the table."I was checking the news," Justin said, pocketing his phone.Lila poked at the steak on her plate. "Mr. Farrow, this is my first time dining at such a fancy restaurant… I never had a chance to come to such places before.""I gave you money, didn't I? You can eat whatever and wherever you want.""You've been incredibly kind to me, Mr. Farrow… I must have saved the universe in my past life to meet you in this one," Lila said.Justin fell into a momentary d

Willow's voice trembled slightly, followed by a bitter smile. "Arthur, what do you think she was trying to do? I'd already given up on our relationship. And now, she dies right in front of me. Do you know what her last words to me were? She said she's sorry."She lowered her head, hands digging into her hair. She looked completely drained, both physically and emotionally. "I don't understand. Did she love me or not? If she did, why was she always siding with Ronald? Why didn't she ever stand up for me? But then, there were so many times I felt like she did love me."Tears slid down her cheeks. "I remember when I was little and had a fever. She stayed up the whole night with me, didn't sleep a second. When I got beaten, she'd secretly put medication on me. When I went overseas, she used to call and ask how I was doing. But after a few minutes, she'd start scolding me, saying I never called Ronald."If she really loved me, why didn't she protect me when he hit me? Why did she want me
