Chapter 2

作者: Tcee Eke
Elara’s POV

The next evening, I stood at the entrance of the Moon Temple and watched Adrian renew his bond with Selene on the same day that was supposed to mark ten years of our chosen bond.

The entire pack was there.

Selene stood beside Adrian in a silver gown and around her neck hung my Luna necklace.

The necklace I’d worn for five years. The necklace Adrian had given me when we chose each other.

Rowan stood at Selene’s side, smiling proudly.

When the priest raised his hand, Adrian reached for Selene’s, his eyes never left hers.

“Before the Moon Goddess and our pack, I acknowledge Selene as my fated mate.”

The words tore through me as the crowd erupted in cheers.

Rowan was the loudest. “Mom! Mom!”

Selene turned toward him and Rowan ran into her arms. She laughed and hugged him tightly while Adrian smiled at them.

For one horrible second, they looked exactly like the family I’d spent five years trying to preserve.

Then Adrian looked at me and his expression turned sour.

“Why are you here, Elara? I told you not to come,” he sighed.

I almost laughed. “It’s our anniversary, Adrian.”

His jaw tightened. “Not tonight, I already made that clear. Why did you have to come here to create a scene and embarrass yourself?”

A bitter smile touched my lips. “I'm embarrassing myself? Couldn't you have done this ceremony on any other day and not today?”

He stepped closer and lowered his voice. “Selene needed this ceremony today. Go back to the estate and stay there. Stop making a fool of yourself.”

I stared at him. “Why? You don't want people to see me heartbroken?”

“There’s nothing for you to do here, Elara. Leave!” he hissed at me.

On the day we’d promised to spend our lives together, my husband had just renewed his bond with another woman, and he was telling me there was nothing for me to do.

Selene touched his arm. “Adrian, don’t make her uncomfortable.”

He immediately turned toward her and his expression softened.

“Are you tired?”

She shook her head. “I’m fine.”

“You should rest.” His voice softened.

I looked away. Five years ago, he used to speak to me like that.

“Go home, Elara,” he said again. “I’ll come later.”

“Yes, Mom. Today is Aunty Selene’s day and we don't want you making her upset by being mean,” Rowan added.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my chest, forced my wolf’s whimper down, and nodded. “Fine.”

I walked out of the temple.

Outside, rain had started falling. A pack car was waiting for me, but I kept walking.

I didn’t want the Luna’s carriage, the guards, or Adrian’s protection.

I didn't want to feel anyone’s pitying gaze as they tried to be polite when I could hear their hushed whispers.

For five years, I’d been the one protecting his family from falling apart.

I covered for his absences, I explained away his cruelty, and I made excuses when the pack noticed Selene’s place beside him.

Whenever Adrian created a mess, I was the one left cleaning it up.

That was what loving him had become.

I was always cleaning up after the man who had stopped choosing me.

I didn’t go back to the estate. I went to the Moonstone Registry.

The registrar looked up in surprise.

“Luna Elara?”

I placed a document on her desk. “I want to dissolve my chosen mate bond.”

She stared at me. “Are you certain?”

I looked down at my empty neck. The necklace was gone. So was the bond I had spent five years pretending was still alive.

“Yes.”

I signed.

By the time Adrian returned to the estate, I was waiting in the sitting room with the folder on the table.

He walked in, his expression tired as he kept a sleeping Rowan on the couch.

“Why are you still awake?”

I pushed the folder toward him. “Sign this.”

“What is this?”

“The dissolution of our chosen mate bond.”

He looked at me in disbelief. “Elara.”

“I’ve already signed.”

His fingers tightened around the papers. “Because of Selene? Because I didn't celebrate our anniversary today?”

“It's been five years of fighting for attention with Selene, Adrian. I'm sick of it.”

Adrian scoffed. “Selene is my fated mate, she needs me but it doesn't change your role in my life.”

“What role is that, Adrian?”

“You’re the mother of my pup and heir. You’re my Luna, and that’s never going to change. What more do you want from me, Elara?”

Elara’s POVAdrian didn’t answer me immediately. He stood across the room, staring at the mark on my neck as though it had finally become real to him then he lowered his head.“I’ve ended things with Selene.”I frowned. “She knows?”“She does now.”His voice was rough. “I’ll provide for her and the pup. But I don’t want to continue living a lie.”I looked at him. “And what exactly do you want from me?”His eyes met mine. “You.”I almost smiled. “Adrian, you lost me five years ago.”“I know.”He stepped closer. “I’ve spent these past months understanding what I threw away. I was so certain fate gave me the right to keep both of you that I never stopped to consider what it was doing to you.”For once, there was no arrogance in his voice, only regret.“I can’t change what happened but you could still come back.”I shook my head. “There’s nothing for me to return to.”His shoulders fell. After a long silence, he picked up the dissolution papers. His fingers trembled slightly as he signed.

Elara’s POVAsh kept showing up after that.Sometimes with breakfast. Sometimes with Rowan tucked under one arm after taking him to train with the younger wolves.Sometimes he simply appeared in my study, dropped a cup of tea beside me, and stayed until I finished whatever pack business I was handling.Somewhere along the way, Rowan stopped treating him like a stranger. He started waiting by the window whenever Ash went out.Three weeks after the incident at Blackfang Peak, Selene came to the Thorn Pack. She found me in the Luna’s office while I was reviewing pack reports. She looked different. Heavily pregnant, tired, but still wearing the confidence of a woman who believed she had already won.“I thought you were dead,” she said, lowering herself into the chair across from me.“So did everyone else.”Her fingers rested over her stomach. “Adrian hasn’t been himself since you came back.”I closed the file in front of me. “That isn’t my concern.”“He barely sleeps. He refuses to accept

Elara’s POVBlackfang Peak was already surrounded by warriors when Ash and I arrived.Adrian stood at the edge of the cliff. The wind tore at his clothes, but he didn’t move.Selene was below the mountain, being held back by several warriors. She was heavily pregnant.“Adrian!” she screamed. “Get down from there! You’re going to kill yourself!”He didn’t answer. His eyes were fixed on the ravine below.“I'll be with my sweet Elara soon,” he muttered.Ash’s jaw tightened. “If he falls from there, his wolf won’t survive.”I swallowed.Adrian knew that, but at that moment, he inhaled deeply and his eyes found mine.He froze. “Elara?”For a moment, nobody moved, then he took a step toward me.“You’re alive.” His voice broke.I said nothing. He came closer. “I knew it. I knew you couldn’t be dead.”Ash stepped in front of me. “Stay where you are.”Adrian’s eyes shifted to him then his expression changed.“Ash Thorn.”“Blackwood.”The two Alphas stared at each other.Adrian’s gaze dropped to

Elara’s POVI looked at Selene’s hand resting over her stomach then I remembered the words I’d spoken at the Moonstone Registry.I don’t want another child contesting Rowan’s place.I had asked Adrian for one thing and fate had already given him the exact thing I feared most.“But you promised me you'll not have any other child,” I said without thinking.Adrian’s expression turned cold. He caught my arm and dragged me into the corridor before I could say another word.“What the hell do you think you’re doing?”I pulled my arm free.“You promised Rowan would always be your only heir.”“He is my heir.”“And Selene’s pup?”His jaw tightened. “She’s carrying my child so that child will be mine too.”“You promised me.”“I made that promise five years ago, Elara.” His voice was cold. “Before I knew my fated mate would give me another pup.”I stared at him. “So that’s it?”“What do you want me to do?”“Keep your promise.”Adrian laughed without humor. “No one is taking Rowan’s place.”“Not ye

Elara’s POVMrs. Blackwood was smiling at the screen, her eyes filled with happiness.“I'm so glad you found your fated mate, Adrian. Take care of her.”Adrian smiled from the phone. “Don’t worry, Mom. I’ll take care of her.”I stood silently in the doorway. For ten years, Mrs. Blackwood had treated me like the daughter she never had but now she was already making room for Selene.“Elara?” Her smile disappeared when she noticed me.I forced one onto my face. “Don't mind me. I'm just passing through.”Before she could say anything, I turned and walked away.I went to the lake behind the old pack grounds—the place where Adrian had first kissed me.The place where we’d promised that no matter what happened, we’d always choose each other. At midnight, I sent the finalized bond dissolution to his phone. This is my final decision. His call came immediately. “You’ve lost your mind.”I stared at the water. “I'm tired of pretending, Adrian.”“I'm sick of this, Elara,” he snapped.“Then just end
