Chapter 1

作者: Simply So
After I hung up the call with my father, Lucas Hart came home with a signed IOU in his hand.

"Nora, I'm sorry. This time I owe another $10 million. I'm so useless."

He was a good actor. In the past, that lost look in his eyes would always earn him the same answer from me.

"It's okay. We'll work hard together. We'll pay it off eventually."

But now, I only stared in silence at the half-hidden watch on his wrist.

It looked ordinary, but I had seen it in a magazine before. It was worth $20 million.

Lucas owned a watch worth $20 million, yet supposedly could not repay $10 million.

I had nothing, but for him, I had been considering borrowing from loan sharks.

My sincerity had become the reason he dared to play with me so recklessly.

Seeing me stare at the watch on his wrist, Lucas calmly pulled me into his arms.

"It's fake, Nora. When I have money, I'll buy you whatever you want."

Because he thought I was poor and knew nothing about luxury goods, he did not even need to think hard when he lied to me.

I looked away, only to see another message pop up on the tablet beside him.

"Mr. Hart, what is the girl planning to sell this time to pay the debt? Flowers, her shop, or... herself?"

"A woman Mr. Hart has played with must taste pretty good. If she's selling herself, I'll buy the first night!"

The messages after that were flooded with filthy jokes and people piling on.

In the three years I had been with Lucas, I had repaid the debts from two of his so-called bankruptcies.

The first time, I sold the house my grandmother left me.

Lucas held me and promised he would give me a home.

But we lived for two years in a basement apartment that cost $400 a month, and then he came back with another $2 million debt.

I still did not blame him. I took out the wedding money my mother had saved for me and filled the hole.

He knelt on one knee and told me that accepting my wedding fund meant he was already my husband. He said he would love me forever and treat me well.

Every promise he made had been a lie from beginning to end.

Lucas's attention was drawn to the constant notifications on his phone.

He glanced at me. Seeing that I was not looking at him, he opened his phone and read the group messages.

Soon, his brows tightened, and his mouth pressed into a hard line.

He tapped on the screen a few times. The tablet beside me showed the message he had sent to the group.

"All of you shut the hell up! Just wait and watch the show!"

Lucas put down his phone. After a long silence, he clung to me again.

"Nora, I promise this is the last time. Once this debt is paid, I'll marry you, okay?"

Looking at the sincerity on his face, I suddenly found it almost funny.

How precious did he think I was, that a rich heir would go to such lengths to deceive me?

He even did not hesitate to say he would marry me.

At first, I had wanted to lay everything out and ask him whether playing me like this was fun.

But now, I did not even have the strength to question him.

I calmly pushed him away.

"But Lucas, I don't have any money left."

Lucas froze. Maybe he had not expected that answer from me.

After all, in his mind, I should have been doing everything possible to pay off his debt.

So the mysterious customer who came to the flower shop every week to buy one bouquet. And the passerby who would stop downstairs late at night after I got off work to smoke. They had both been him.All those years, Holden had stayed by my side for so long.Holden grew uncomfortable under my stare. He looked away and asked, "What is it?"I said, "Holden, don't tell me you fell for me a long time ago."His body visibly stiffened. Just when I thought I would not get an answer, Holden suddenly took my hand."Yes. I fell for you a long time ago."Do you know how happy I was when I found out you agreed to the marriage arrangement?"Nora, will you give me a chance to take care of you for the rest of my life?"His eyes were so full of affection that for a moment, I felt as if I could drown in them.I tightened my hold on his hand too."I can't give you a definite answer right now, but... Holden, we can try."Although we did not sleep in the same room that night, from that day on,

Lucas jerked his head up, his face instantly turning deathly pale.He grabbed my hand again."It wasn't me... I didn't make you...""Mr. Hart."A cold male voice came from the doorway. Holden's suit was damp with rain, and his tie clip gleamed sharply under the light."What are you doing to my wife?"A vein throbbed at Lucas's temple as he stared hard at the man standing in front of me."So you're Holden Shaw?"Nora could never marry you! The person she likes is me!"He looked at me, his eyes pleading."Nora, listen to me. I didn't make you deliver those roses. I didn't buy them. I...""Lucas..." I interrupted with a smile."You're always so confident. But the moment I found out you lied to me, I stopped loving you."Lucas's face turned paler than my wedding dress. He suddenly gripped the edge of the vanity and dry-heaved, his knuckles turning bluish white from the force.Rapid footsteps sounded outside the door. The butler hurried in."Sir, the guests have begun enteri

I interrupted him and stared at the scar near his brow bone."I'm willing to marry you. I'm only afraid it isn't fair to you... after all, I don't love you yet."Holden's throat moved. His gaze swept past me to the glass cabinet behind me.After a long silence, he said, "Tomorrow, I'll announce our marriage publicly. The wedding will be the day after tomorrow."When he turned to leave, his black suit stirred up that scent of cedar mixed with mint again.I watched his back, feeling a little lonely and a little strangely familiar. My heart seemed to miss half a beat. I raised my voice and called him."Holden!"Have you been to Harbor City before?"His steps stopped at the door, but he did not turn back to look at me, nor did he answer. When he moved again, he had already left.A day later, in the bridal dressing room backstage.I wore a wedding gown covered in diamonds. Holden had spent a fortune to have it flown in from overseas.Under the lights, I gently touched the dream

His voice was half a degree lower than usual, carrying a deliberate roughness.I pressed my lips together, still looking out the window."N-No, thank you."Just as I spoke, the plane hit turbulence, and the cabin jolted violently. He instinctively reached out to protect my shoulder. The warmth of his palm burned through the thin fabric of my clothes. The flight attendant's gentle reassurance sounded over the speakers. When he withdrew his hand, his fingertips paused above the armrest for half a second before finally curling into a fist and slipping into the pocket of his suit pants.By the time we returned to the Bell estate, it was already late.My father was still waiting in the living room to have dinner with me.Three years had passed since I last saw him. There was more gray at his temples than in the photos, and for a moment, he looked like an old man nearing the end of his years.I thought he would say many things to me, but the first thing he said when we met was only

Only one thought remained in his mind.I knew everything.I knew he had been pretending to be poor. I knew he had been lying to me from the beginning.I even knew that everything I had done for him had become entertainment for him and his friends over drinks. The tablet seemed to turn into a boulder in his hand. His fingers began to tremble. After a long time, as if all his strength had drained away, his hand dropped heavily, and the tablet fell to the floor, shattering into pieces. My father's people worked fast. By the time I arrived at the airport, someone was already waiting for me.He wore a black suit, and at nearly six foot three, he carried a presence that felt almost oppressive.Maybe I looked too miserable at that moment, because he silently handed me a tissue.I pinched the tissue, which still held the warmth of his hand, and my fingers trembled slightly. The scent on it was faint, like cedar mixed with mint. The scent felt familiar. It was only when he removed hi

The phone in Lucas's hand dropped to the floor with a sharp clatter. He grabbed the agent by the collar, his expression vicious."What did you say? Married? Who's getting married?"The agent was frightened by his sudden outburst and began to stammer."M-Mr. Hart, it's Ms. Nora Bell who's getting married. Don't you know her?""Impossible!" Lucas roared. His eyes were bloodshot, and his chest rose and fell violently. The agent was so scared he nearly collapsed, but Lucas kept his grip locked around his collar. In the end, Lucas's friends rushed over and managed to talk him into letting go.Once the agent could breathe again, he quickly dropped the transfer contract and left.Lucas held that thin sheet of paper and felt as if breathing had become difficult."Lucas, Nora must be playing hard to get. She loves you so much. How could she marry someone else?""Exactly. Maybe she's transferring the shop just to repay your debt."His friends talked over one another. Lucas was panick
