Chapter 2

Author: Lingering Dream
The day I went back to the office, I submitted an internal transfer request to HR.

The company was putting together a new project team in Luminous City. The person in charge looked through my file, then glanced up at me.

"Yvonne, are you sure?

"Once the project is approved, you'll have to leave within 2 weeks."

I nodded. "I'm sure."

He took the paperwork from me.

"The interview is next Monday. Get yourself ready."

After leaving HR, I went back to my desk and started sorting through my files.

That afternoon, James stopped beside my desk. "What are you doing?"

"Handing over my work."

"What about the livestream setup?" he asked.

"I didn't do it," I said quietly.

His voice dropped. "Yvonne, this isn't the time to be difficult."

I looked up at him. "That is your personal account, not my job."

James seemed caught off guard. His tone softened. "I'm just used to coming to you first."

I smiled.

"Are you used to relying on me, or are you used to having me clean up your messes with Zara?"

He went silent for a moment. Then he set his thermos on my desk.

"Hot tea. Drink it while it's warm. Do not drink it cold."

With that, he turned and walked away.

When I got back to the apartment after work, camera equipment was scattered across the floor. Zara stood in the living room, adjusting a camera lens.

"Yvonne, I'm filming a newlywed experience video. I'm moving in for a few days."

Couples' pillows had already been arranged around the living room.

James came out from the other room.

"It's only 3 days. If we suddenly change locations, the fans will get suspicious."

I said nothing and walked straight into the bedroom.

The closet doors were wide open. My clothes had been stuffed into cardboard boxes and piled in the corner.

Meanwhile, Zara's dresses filled half the closet.

Even the framed photo of James and me that used to sit on the nightstand was gone. In its place was a picture of James and Zara celebrating the day their account passed 1 million followers.

James followed me into the room. "You can sleep in the study for these 3 days."

I picked up one of the boxes. "Who gave you permission to move my things?"

"It's only temporary." He frowned. "Yvonne, do not make this into a bigger deal than it is."

Zara appeared in the doorway and spoke softly. "Maybe I should film at a hotel instead."

James did not hesitate. "No. A hotel will not have the right homey feel."

I crouched down and started gathering the things from my nightstand. A corner of a hospital bag from the OB‑GYN clinic was sticking out from the very back.

Zara spotted it. She reached for it.

"What's this?"

James grabbed it first. He looked down at the bag, and his expression changed.

For a second, I thought he was finally going to ask me what it was. However, Zara suddenly gripped the doorframe, her voice shaky.

"James, my period still hasn't come. Do you think something's wrong?

"Tomorrow's livestream is going to be pretty intense. I'm a little scared."

James immediately turned toward her.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner? I'll take you to the hospital tomorrow."

As he spoke, he casually stuffed the hospital bag into Zara's suitcase. As if he had already decided it belonged to her.

I stood there, and suddenly, I did not want to say another word. I picked up my boxes and walked out.

James hurried after me and grabbed my arm. "Where are you going?"

"Moving out."

His fingers tightened around my arm.

"Do not say that.

"Zara's only staying for 3 days."

I pressed the elevator button.

"It's fine. Give her the space."

As the elevator doors slowly closed, James was still standing outside, staring at me.

For the first time, he looked a little panicked.

However, he did not follow me.

Before Hank and I got married, we never filmed any couple challenges or made a list of a hundred things we had to do.We only did three simple things together. We picked a wedding date, invited the people who truly mattered to us, and announced our marriage at both of our companies. The day we made the announcement, many coworkers came to congratulate us.Hank even asked me, "Do you want to keep the announcement limited to a smaller group?"He knew I still had some scars from everything that had happened when I made my relationship public. He also knew that just because I said I had moved on did not mean every trace of the past would disappear.I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head."No."If we're getting married, then we should tell everyone openly."He nodded and handed me the list of people who would receive the announcement. He did not make the decision for me. He did not hide me behind those three words, "I'm doing this for you."During the wedding prepara

A year later, I returned to my old city for the company's annual conference. This time, I came back as the head of the new project team and one of the conference's main speakers. Before I went onstage, my assistant straightened my materials and smiled."Ms. Wheeler, a lot of people out there are waiting to hear your case study."I took the microphone and nodded. When I stepped into the spotlight, I saw plenty of familiar faces in the front rows.I saw James. He was sitting off to the right. His name badge read Project Consultant. He was no longer the Mr. Porter everyone used to crowd around. My eyes rested on him for only a second before moving on.The presentation went smoothly. I talked about rebuilding a brand, communicating with users, and the challenges of launching a project in a new location, along with the adjustments we had made along the way.The audience applauded several times. When I finished, the host smiled."Ms. Wheeler, we hope you'll come back to headquarte

When we reached the hospital, Hank pulled into a parking spot."I'll wait for you here.""It might take a while," I said softly."That's okay."By the time I finished my examination and came back out, it was almost two in the afternoon. Hank was leaning against the car, holding a cup of hot soup."The line at the doctor's office was pretty long. Drink something first."I stared at him. "How did you know I hadn't eaten?""You only drank half a cup of coffee at the morning meeting." He handed me the soup. "You had the tests done on an empty stomach. Your stomach's probably feeling awful."For a moment, I did not say anything. I lowered my head and took the cup from him.Warm steam brushed my face, and my eyes suddenly stung. The more time I spent around him, the more I realized that this was simply who Hank was. When I worked late into the night, he left the last light in the hallway on. However, he never texted me to hurry up.When I was in a bad mood, he only asked, "Want t

The head of the company's internal investigation team looked up at her."Ms. Charlton, we've already pulled the records for the original drafts."The final versions of the scripts were completed after Yvonne submitted her proposals."Zara's lips moved, but no words came out.James lifted his head."A lot of the content came from Yvonne."She never gave us permission to turn our private relationship into promotional material for the couple account."Once those words were out, there was no way to contain the situation anymore. That same day, the company issued an internal disciplinary notice. James was removed from his position as director and demoted to an ordinary project consultant. All operating rights for the account were revoked.Zara's eligibility for company partnerships was suspended pending further investigation.Neither of them blamed the other, and neither felt the need to post a long statement trying to clear their name. The account that had once gained millions

After James left the account, Zara still tried to keep it going. She continued posting breakfast photos, bouquets, and gym selfies as if nothing had changed. Even her captions stayed the same.[We've both been busy lately, but the love is still there.]The comments, however, were not buying it.[Where's James?][Why haven't you two appeared together since the livestream wedding?][What exactly was the hundredth couple challenge?][Weren't you supposed to have a fresh start?]Zara started a livestream. On camera, she wore a white sweater, her eyes slightly red."Everyone, please don't overthink it. We've just been really busy with work."The comments flew across the screen.[Then let James come out and say something.][Didn't you two announce your marriage?][You're so busy you can't even appear together once?]Zara gripped her water glass so tightly her knuckles turned white."He's not available to be on camera."The moment she finished speaking, a link suddenly flooded

There were only three things inside. There was a photo of James and me from five years ago, a key to the apartment, and a hospital report.James stared at those few lines on the report. His whole body went rigid. That day, in the pouring rain, I had fallen into the mud. He had shielded Zara as she got into the car.He had thought the only thing I had lost that day was a cake. He had been wrong.By the time he reached the airport, boarding for my flight had already closed. He rushed to the counter, his voice falling apart."Has Yvonne already gone through?"The airport employee could only repeat the same thing."I'm sorry, sir. We can't disclose passenger information."He ran to the security checkpoint, but the guards stopped him. Then Joyce came back out from the other side. She looked as if she had known all along that he would come. She handed him an old notebook."Yvonne asked me to give this to you."James opened it. Pages one through ninety‑nine were filled with dates.
