Chapter 3

Author: Lingering Dream
Once I settled into my short‑term rental, I went back to polishing my application for the new position.

The day before the anniversary celebration, James called me into his office.

"Tomorrow's the anniversary event. Zara will be giving the presentation instead. Those old garage photos are still online, and having you two appear together could affect the company."

I leaned back in my chair. "The proposal I created, and she gets to present it?"

"You're not losing any credit." He said it like it was no big deal.

I stared at him.

"Five years ago, you told me to put up with it for a while. You said things would be fine once the attention died down.

"Five years have passed, and you're still asking me to hide.

"James, are you really protecting me, or are you protecting the two of you?"

His face darkened little by little. "This is the company's decision."

"No." I pushed the documents back across the desk. "This is just what you've gotten used to. You're used to making me step aside."

The door opened.

Zara stood in the doorway wearing a formal evening gown, one hand gathering the skirt.

I recognized that dress. It was the one James had gone shopping with me to try on before our fifth‑anniversary dinner.

He had told me I would look beautiful in it.

Now Zara was wearing it.

Around her neck was the necklace with the number 100.

When Zara saw me, she looked almost uncomfortable.

"Yvonne, I didn't mean to. James said the final challenge needed a little ceremony, so he let me borrow it."

James jumped in immediately. "She'll give it back when it's over."

I did not look at him. I pulled out my phone and uploaded the complete proposal, along with all my original drafts and creation records, to the company system.

"It's all clearly documented in the system. Whoever presents it is fine."

On the day of the celebration, Zara stood onstage presenting the project. The audience erupted in applause. The host praised her enthusiastically.

"Zara, you've really surprised us! Your videos are great, and now your planning is this impressive too."

A coworker beside me sighed in admiration.

"No wonder she and Mr. Porter managed to build the account into what it is.

"She really got lucky. Love and career, she has it all."

I opened my phone. A confirmation notification from the new project team was waiting for me.

I replied: [I accept.]

Then the host handed the microphone back to Zara. "Are you announcing the hundredth challenge today?"

Zara slipped her arm around James. "We want to have a livestream wedding."

The entire room exploded with cheers.

The cameras immediately swung toward James.

He froze.

The host laughed and pressed him for an answer. "Mr. Porter, are you willing?"

Zara was already holding onto his arm, waiting for him to speak.

I did not stay to hear his answer. I got up and walked out.

I had barely reached the corner backstage when a sudden, heavy pain dropped through my lower abdomen.

I grabbed the wall. My face went white. A few seconds later, blood began pouring down my legs again.

I slowly sank to the floor, cold sweat breaking out across my forehead.

Footsteps sounded behind me.

"Yvonne!" James came running over and crouched in front of me. "What happened?"

He reached out to help me up. Then a sudden commotion erupted from the stage.

Someone shouted,

"Zara fell! Someone get over here!"

James glanced back toward the stage. Then he looked at me.

"Wait here. I need to check on her."

He stood up and ran.

I stayed crouched on the floor, watching his back disappear. Somehow, the pain did not feel quite as sharp anymore.

I pulled out my phone myself and called an ambulance.

At 10 that night, I was lying in a hospital bed again.

The doctor told me my recovery after the procedure had not gone well. I had not been resting enough lately either.

"You need complete rest," he said.

While I was getting an IV, James sent me a voice message.

"Yvonne, don't make a scene today.

"Zara's foot isn't seriously hurt, but we can't cancel the meet‑and‑greet.

"The livestream wedding hasn't been planned yet. You're the best at knowing how to handle these things. Write up a plan and give it to me tomorrow."

I listened to the whole thing. Then I deleted the voice message.

I opened my email and sent out my transfer confirmation.

Before closing the app, I sent him one final message.

[The livestream wedding script should be written by the man who actually wants to marry her.]

After sending it, I removed James from my pinned chats.

Before Hank and I got married, we never filmed any couple challenges or made a list of a hundred things we had to do.We only did three simple things together. We picked a wedding date, invited the people who truly mattered to us, and announced our marriage at both of our companies. The day we made the announcement, many coworkers came to congratulate us.Hank even asked me, "Do you want to keep the announcement limited to a smaller group?"He knew I still had some scars from everything that had happened when I made my relationship public. He also knew that just because I said I had moved on did not mean every trace of the past would disappear.I thought about it for a moment, then shook my head."No."If we're getting married, then we should tell everyone openly."He nodded and handed me the list of people who would receive the announcement. He did not make the decision for me. He did not hide me behind those three words, "I'm doing this for you."During the wedding prepara

A year later, I returned to my old city for the company's annual conference. This time, I came back as the head of the new project team and one of the conference's main speakers. Before I went onstage, my assistant straightened my materials and smiled."Ms. Wheeler, a lot of people out there are waiting to hear your case study."I took the microphone and nodded. When I stepped into the spotlight, I saw plenty of familiar faces in the front rows.I saw James. He was sitting off to the right. His name badge read Project Consultant. He was no longer the Mr. Porter everyone used to crowd around. My eyes rested on him for only a second before moving on.The presentation went smoothly. I talked about rebuilding a brand, communicating with users, and the challenges of launching a project in a new location, along with the adjustments we had made along the way.The audience applauded several times. When I finished, the host smiled."Ms. Wheeler, we hope you'll come back to headquarte

When we reached the hospital, Hank pulled into a parking spot."I'll wait for you here.""It might take a while," I said softly."That's okay."By the time I finished my examination and came back out, it was almost two in the afternoon. Hank was leaning against the car, holding a cup of hot soup."The line at the doctor's office was pretty long. Drink something first."I stared at him. "How did you know I hadn't eaten?""You only drank half a cup of coffee at the morning meeting." He handed me the soup. "You had the tests done on an empty stomach. Your stomach's probably feeling awful."For a moment, I did not say anything. I lowered my head and took the cup from him.Warm steam brushed my face, and my eyes suddenly stung. The more time I spent around him, the more I realized that this was simply who Hank was. When I worked late into the night, he left the last light in the hallway on. However, he never texted me to hurry up.When I was in a bad mood, he only asked, "Want t

The head of the company's internal investigation team looked up at her."Ms. Charlton, we've already pulled the records for the original drafts."The final versions of the scripts were completed after Yvonne submitted her proposals."Zara's lips moved, but no words came out.James lifted his head."A lot of the content came from Yvonne."She never gave us permission to turn our private relationship into promotional material for the couple account."Once those words were out, there was no way to contain the situation anymore. That same day, the company issued an internal disciplinary notice. James was removed from his position as director and demoted to an ordinary project consultant. All operating rights for the account were revoked.Zara's eligibility for company partnerships was suspended pending further investigation.Neither of them blamed the other, and neither felt the need to post a long statement trying to clear their name. The account that had once gained millions

After James left the account, Zara still tried to keep it going. She continued posting breakfast photos, bouquets, and gym selfies as if nothing had changed. Even her captions stayed the same.[We've both been busy lately, but the love is still there.]The comments, however, were not buying it.[Where's James?][Why haven't you two appeared together since the livestream wedding?][What exactly was the hundredth couple challenge?][Weren't you supposed to have a fresh start?]Zara started a livestream. On camera, she wore a white sweater, her eyes slightly red."Everyone, please don't overthink it. We've just been really busy with work."The comments flew across the screen.[Then let James come out and say something.][Didn't you two announce your marriage?][You're so busy you can't even appear together once?]Zara gripped her water glass so tightly her knuckles turned white."He's not available to be on camera."The moment she finished speaking, a link suddenly flooded

There were only three things inside. There was a photo of James and me from five years ago, a key to the apartment, and a hospital report.James stared at those few lines on the report. His whole body went rigid. That day, in the pouring rain, I had fallen into the mud. He had shielded Zara as she got into the car.He had thought the only thing I had lost that day was a cake. He had been wrong.By the time he reached the airport, boarding for my flight had already closed. He rushed to the counter, his voice falling apart."Has Yvonne already gone through?"The airport employee could only repeat the same thing."I'm sorry, sir. We can't disclose passenger information."He ran to the security checkpoint, but the guards stopped him. Then Joyce came back out from the other side. She looked as if she had known all along that he would come. She handed him an old notebook."Yvonne asked me to give this to you."James opened it. Pages one through ninety‑nine were filled with dates.
