“Miss Anna, it’s time for dinner,” Ferdi said as he knocked politely on her door.

“Yes, just a moment,” Anna replied. She hurried to smooth her hair before opening the door.

“Sir and Madam are already waiting in the dining room,” Ferdi continued. “Please, allow me to escort you.”

Anna nodded and followed him down the long corridor of the large mansion. The comforting aroma of warm soup drifted toward her as they neared the dining hall.

“Anna, come sit here,” Matilda called with a warm smile the moment Anna appeared at the doorway.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting, Mom,” Anna said softly.

“It’s alright. Besides, Liam still hasn’t come home,” Matilda replied casually—making Anna narrow her eyes in confusion.

“Liam?”

“Liam is our only son, Anna,” Jonathan explained gently.

Anna nodded and tried to return the smile, though something uneasy tugged inside her chest.

Probably just a coincidence—the name, she told herself.

She had just pulled her chair when a deep voice echoed from behind her.

“Mom, why did you tell me to come home?”

Anna turned instinctively—and her knees nearly buckled. It felt as if the floor dropped beneath her feet.

“Anna? What’s wrong?” Matilda asked in alarm, catching Anna’s arm. “Are you feeling sick?”

“N-No… I’m fine, Mom,” Anna answered nervously, her voice trembling.

God… this is the Alonzo family?

She bit her lip hard, trying to steady her breathing.

“Liam, this is Anna,” Matilda said brightly, oblivious to the tension in the air. “Starting today, she’ll be living with us.”

“You decided to adopt someone just like that?” Liam asked sharply, his gaze sweeping over Anna from head to toe, making her freeze in place.

“You’re rarely home. The house feels lonely. Isn’t that right, Dad?” Matilda looked to her husband for backup.

Jonathan nodded firmly. “Exactly. And you don’t get to oppose our decision.”

Liam let out a quiet scoff. “Do whatever you want. But do you even know where she came from? What if she’s some crazy drunk?”

Anna’s face drained of color. Her hands trembled beneath the table.

“Liam! Don’t say such things!” Matilda snapped.

“That’s enough,” Jonathan cut in firmly, stopping the argument before it could escalate. “Let’s just eat.”

Anna sat down across from Liam, but she didn’t dare lift her gaze. His cold aura seeped across the table, tightening her chest. Even the soft clink of cutlery sounded uncomfortably loud.

After dinner, Anna went straight back to her room, desperate to keep her distance from Liam. But when she reached the third floor, she abruptly stopped.

Liam was there—talking to Ferdi in a low, firm tone.

When he sensed her presence, he turned.

For a few tense seconds, their eyes locked.

Cold. Sharp. Unyielding.

Then, without a word, Liam looked away and entered the room directly beside hers.

“Miss Anna? Why are you spacing out?” Ferdi asked, breaking the silence.

“That… that’s Mr. Liam’s room?” Anna’s voice was barely audible.

“Yes, Miss,” Ferdi replied politely. “And the room to the right of yours is his private office. I suggest you keep your distance from that area.”

The warning made Anna swallow hard, her heartbeat stumbling.

She nodded weakly, and Ferdi walked away, leaving her alone in the corridor.

Anna quickly slipped into her room and shut the door tightly, as though afraid even her breath might be heard.

“Out of all the rooms in this huge house, why did they put me next to his?” she muttered in frustration, hugging her arms.

The one man she wanted to avoid more than anything…

was now only a single wall away.

“Mom, have you had lunch yet?” Anna asked when she saw Matilda sitting on the living room sofa.“I have. Where have you been?” Matilda replied, turning toward her with a faint frown.“I’m sorry, Mom. I had an appointment with someone earlier,” Anna said gently. “I’m sorry for leaving you alone at home.”Matilda put on a deliberately annoyed expression. Anna immediately sat beside her and slipped her arm around Matilda’s, leaning in affectionately.“Mom…” she murmured.“Hmph,” Matilda huffed. “As an apology, you’re coming with me to an event tomorrow.”Anna knew better than to argue. She nodded obediently. “Alright, Mom.”“Then we need to go to a boutique to buy you a dress,” Matilda continued.Once again, Anna could only agree. “I’m going to change first. Wait for me here,” Matilda said.“Yes, Mom.”Matilda headed to her room with visible enthusiasm. Anna, on the other hand, stayed in the same clothes—too lazy to bother changing. She waited on the sofa until several minutes later, wh

As Anna stepped out of the guest room, her phone began to ring. She halted mid-step and answered at once. Liam’s name glowed on the screen.“Hello? What’s wrong, Liam?” she asked softly.“Has Mom arrived?” Liam’s voice sounded even, but Anna could hear the concern beneath it.“Yes. She just got here. I told her to rest first,” Anna replied.“Hm… okay.”There was a brief pause. “Is there something else you wanted to say?” Anna asked.“I’ll be coming home late tonight. Could you stay with Mom?”“Of course,” Anna answered without hesitation.“And… help talk to her,” Liam added. “You understand what I mean, right?”“I do. Don’t worry. Just focus on your work,” she said gently.“Thank you, Anna.”This time, his voice carried a warmth that made a faint smile curve Anna’s lips. When the call ended, she lowered her phone and resumed walking toward her room. She hadn’t even reached it when another notification stopped her in her tracks. An email had just come in—an update from Seraphin Hospita

“El, help me find a job,” Anna said as she called Elena. The moment the line connected, she dropped back onto her bed, staring up at the ceiling with an empty, distant gaze.“Are you short on money?” Elena asked.“No, Elena. I’m just bored staying at home,” Anna answered honestly. “Help me out, will you?”“I heard yesterday that Seraphim Hospital is opening new positions. You should try applying there.”“Seraphim?” Anna pushed herself up slightly. “Isn’t that owned by the Alonzo Group?”“Yes, it is. Why?”Anna fell silent. Something stirred in her mind, tightening her chest.“Are you still scared because of what happened at the club back then?” Elena asked, her voice calm but pressing. “Come on, we’ve been fine all this time. And besides, even if the hospital belongs to the Alonzo Group, the chances of you running into Liam are really small.”Anna bit her lower lip. She wanted to be honest—to tell Elena everything—but she knew the truth would completely shock her best friend. She let

“When did you learn to be a barista?” Liam asked, his gaze fixed on the heart-shaped foam art floating atop the coffee Anna had made.“Back in college. I’ve always liked coffee,” Anna replied lightly.“And what else do you like?”Liam’s question made Anna set down the fork she had been holding.“Why are you suddenly so curious about my life?” she teased, resting her chin on her hand. “Aren’t you afraid you might fall in love with me?”“Are you trying to flirt with me, Anna?” Liam’s gaze sharpened, studying her as though he could see straight through her thoughts.“N-no! I wouldn’t dare,” Anna blurted out, catching the warning edge in his tone. “I was just joking.”“Then why do you look afraid of me?”Anna swallowed hard. Her throat felt dry, her tongue frozen in place. There was no way she could tell him the truth. How could I not be afraid of a man known as the Devil King? That morning, she had even prepared breakfast just to make sure Liam wouldn’t be upset. Anna stepped out of the bedroom and wandered through the house, her steps restless as she searched for Liam. Since yesterday’s incident, she hadn’t seen him even once. His absence—made worse by the way he had left without a single word—left her heart in constant turmoil.“Is there anything I can help you with, ma’am?” Wira asked when he noticed Anna looking unsettled, as if she were searching for something.“Where is Liam?” Anna asked without preamble.“The master left yesterday with Mr. Kenzo and hasn’t returned yet, ma’am,” Wira answered honestly. At that, Anna unconsciously twisted the hem of her sleeve. Her chest tightened. She kept thinking, searching for a way to ease Liam’s anger. After a moment, she finally turned toward the kitchen.“Ma’am, what brings you to the kitchen so early?” Maria asked anxiously when she saw Anna enter, clearly flustered since breakfast wasn’t ready yet. “Are you planning to eat now?”“I’ll prepare it myself,” Anna said calmly, but firmly.“But, ma’am

“Ouch!” Anna whimpered, making Liam immediately pull away from her lips.“What’s wrong?” Liam asked when he saw her clutching her stomach.“I got my period,” Anna replied softly, embarrassment clear in her voice.Liam flicked her forehead without hesitation. “You’re on your period and you still drank alcohol?” he scolded, making Anna shrink even further.Without waiting for an answer, Liam scooped her up and laid her gently on the bed.“Have you eaten?” he asked.Anna simply shook her head.Liam’s expression hardened at once, clearly displeased. Anna instinctively lowered her gaze.“Stay here. I’ll prepare something for you,” Liam said before turning away.Anna watched his retreating back, her emotions tangled and hard to name.“Prepare some food and bring it to the bedroom,” Liam ordered Maria as he passed her.“Yes, Sir.”“Make sure Madam eats,” he added firmly before heading into the kitchen.“Yes, Sir,” Maria replied obediently. The maids exchanged looks when they saw Liam—usually
