Chapter 3

Author: Sol F
The stone floor at the Moon Goddess altar was bitterly cold.

By the third hour of kneeling, my shoulder was bleeding again. The Beta who'd brought me wanted to go get a healer. Before I could tell him I was fine, I pitched forward and went down.

Sometime in the night, I was burning up with fever.

Half-conscious, I found myself 13 again.

Kane stood in front of me with the wolves of Moonbridge at his back, like my savior.

He held his hand out to me. "Don't be scared. Nobody will dare push you around again. As long as I'm alive, I'll always protect you."

In the dream I reached for his hand, but all my fingers found was cold stone.

"Liar..."

My teeth were chattering from the fever, but I still mumbled in a small, wounded voice, "Uncle Kane, you said you'd always protect me. You're not allowed to break your promise..."

Someone wiped my tears away. The fingers lingered for a moment, then slowly pulled away.

When I woke up again, two days had passed.

My shoulder had been rebandaged, and someone had changed my bloody clothes. When Mae saw my eyes open, she hurried over with a glass of warm water.

The floating text was even more frantic than she was.

[Baby's awake! Kane's been by your side for two days. He called the healer in himself to treat your wound again, and at night he wiped the sweat off you to bring your fever down.]

[His eyes went red when he saw the blood on your shoulder. Can't you trust him one more time?]

I heard a car pull into the courtyard below.

[Kane heard you were awake. He left in the middle of a major deal and rushed straight back to Moonbridge!]

Still holding the glass, I couldn't stop myself from getting out of bed.

Kane had barely pushed the door open when I went to meet him.

"Unc—" The name I'd clung to for seven years almost slipped out, but I forced it back down. "What are you doing here?"

His face was thunderous. Before I could even reach him, he grabbed my arm.

"Did you use the Moonbridge Alpha's name to threaten the Alliance hospital into getting rid of Vivian?"

I stared at him. "What?"

"She finally landed a good job as a nurse at the Alliance hospital, and you made them fire her. She went to see the director today and broke her leg on the way."

So he'd walked out on his deal and rushed back just to get justice for Vivian.

"I never contacted the hospital."

Kane scoffed. "Her coworkers heard you threaten the director. In all of Moonbridge, no, in the whole North, who but you would have the nerve to threaten people in my name? And who else would want her gone just because I brought her home?"

His grip pulled at my arrow wound, but the words "who but you" hurt even more.

The moonstone, the dress, the fake tail. I didn't even know who ran the hospital. And every time, he'd decided I was guilty without checking the facts.

Anger shot through me. I lifted my chin, and my claws slid out of my fingertips.

"With my temper? If I really wanted her gone, I'd have thrown her out of Moonbridge on her first day. Why would I hide behind a phone call?

"When I say I didn't do it, I didn't do it. If you want proof, I'll go dig it up with you. And if it turns out you blamed me for nothing, you're apologizing to me in front of the whole pack!"

Kane stared at me, and his grip loosened a little.

Just then, his phone rang. Vivian's weak voice came through the speaker.

"Kane, don't blame Sandra... She told me in private once that I shouldn't work at the hospital. If I'd just listened sooner, none of this would've happened."

She paused, then added softly, "It's only one broken leg. The healer says it'll heal. Please don't fight with her over me anymore."

Every word she said was a plea on my behalf, and every word pinned the blame more firmly on me.

I was so angry I laughed. "Vivian, when did I ever talk to you in private?"

The line went quiet.

But Kane's eyes had gone cold again.

"She's hurt, and she's still standing up for you. And you? You can't even do the bare minimum and admit you were wrong. You're hopeless."

"I didn't do it. Why should I apologize?"

"Since you still won't own up to it," Kane said, letting go of me, "you can find out how it feels to have something you love taken away."

He signaled to Brody, one of the guards by the door.

Brody went upstairs and soon came back down carrying an old wooden chest.

It held everything my parents had left me.

My mother's cloak, my father's obsidian arrowheads, the letters they wrote me before they went off to war for the last time. All of it was in there.

The color drained from my face. I couldn't even feel the wound in my shoulder anymore.

"Kane, don't touch that."

He gave me one cold look. Then, without the slightest hesitation, he gave Brody his order.

"Burn it."

A month later, we went to inspect the border between the North and the South.Kane never showed his face to me again. But every checkpoint we passed already had guards lined up for us. No one let us pay for a room, and even the roads the rogues had attacked had been cleared before we got there.Theo quickly found out that all of it had been arranged by Moonbridge. He put the report in front of me, looking deeply unhappy about it."Well, he's a man of his word, I'll give him that. He hasn't shown his face."I closed the file."He thinks this is respecting me? He's still acting like he knows best. I stopped being that little girl who loved him a long time ago."I reimbursed every expense, item by item, and asked Eleanor at Moonbridge to pass a message on to Kane for me. He needed to stop deciding what was good for me.After that, there were no more arrangements from Moonbridge along the way.Kane had finally learned how to really let go.That same month, Erin Gray, the woman who'd posed

A month later, Theo and I held our mating ceremony at the Moon Goddess temple in the South.Alliance media crowded outside the temple. Theo had never revealed who I was, so the engagement wouldn't get in the way of my work. It wasn't until the day of the ceremony that the world found out who the South's future Luna would be.Before I left, my assistant showed me what was trending on the Alliance network. Some people guessed the bride came from a noble southern family. Others had dug up the old story of Theo being kidnapped by rogues when he was seven. Rumor had it he'd spent all these years looking for the girl who'd escaped from the mine with him. They were half right. But I wasn't standing beside Theo today to repay a childhood debt. I was choosing him for myself. Before the ceremony started, I got a call from Eleanor at Moonbridge.Kane had woken up.The bolt the rogue shot had been coated with silver. He'd been unconscious for over a month, and the wound still hadn't fully healed.

Theo's fingers tightened around the chipped red agate button."You finally recognized me."Thirteen years ago, the packs of the North and South held a joint ceremony near Moonbridge. A band of rogues waited for the guards to change shifts, then snatched the children who'd come to the ceremony and demanded land and supplies from every pack as ransom.Theo and I were two of them. The rogues recognized me as the only purebred white wolf pup in the North and wanted to keep me for themselves. To get me out with him, Theo lured the guards away on purpose and took a knife to the leg. I carried him on my back into an abandoned mine, tore my coat into strips to bandage him, and then got us both out through an air shaft. The rogues chasing us were searching right outside the mine. Theo was shaking all over from the pain, but he still clamped a hand over my mouth so I wouldn't make a sound. I jammed my last iron arrow into the shaft to block it, then hauled him all the way to the far side of the

That night, I took my team out to celebrate. When dinner was over, I'd just stepped outside when Theo's car pulled up at the curb. The window rolled down. He had one hand resting on the steering wheel."Ms. Hawthorne, care to give your rival a chance to drive you home?"My coworkers were right behind me, so I yanked the door open and got in fast. We'd driven a long way before Theo finally spoke."So. When does this fiancé of yours get to come out of hiding?"He counted them off on his fingers."The logistics lead brought you coffee today. That blond wolf from the trade department asked you to go riding this weekend. And the new Beta on your team sat next to you the entire celebration."I fought back a smile and made a point of looking out the window."But we haven't had the wedding, and we haven't completed the marking. If I said I was single, I don't think I'd be wrong."Theo went still for a beat, his hands on the wheel.A few seconds later, he answered with a perfectly straight face

  • Too Late to Claim Me, Uncle Alpha   Chapter 12

"Alpha!"My eyes flew open.In my dream, Kane had been a black wolf lying in a pool of blood with a bolt in his back, still guarding that once-shattered moonstone under his paw.It wasn't until I took in the files on my desk and the unfamiliar southern street outside the window that I slowly came back to the present.I'd left Moonbridge almost two weeks ago.I'd promised myself I wouldn't think about him anymore, and yet I'd dreamed about him during my lunch break.I closed my eyes and pushed down a nagging unease I couldn't explain. There were two light knocks on my office door."Come in."Theo Ashford leaned against the doorframe, amusement dancing in his pale green eyes."So I hear our unstoppable Sandra hides in her office to nap?"I closed the proposal on my desk and lifted my chin."I'm taking a perfectly legitimate lunch break. You, on the other hand, Alpha Ashford, are my competition now. If you keep showing up at my office, people will think I'm getting inside information beca

Before he left Moonbridge, his assistant brought him a long, narrow box.Inside was the moonstone necklace, freshly repaired. While Sandra lay unconscious at the altar, Kane had someone take the pieces out of her pouch and send them off to be fixed. Now there was only the faintest crack left in the stone.Kane wound the necklace around his wrist and touched the moonstone with his thumb."Wait for me a little longer."Late that night, the Moonbridge party stopped at the edge of a dense forest. The guards made the caller lead the way. He pulled aside a vine-covered stretch of wire fence and pointed to a camp glowing with firelight among the trees."She's in there."Kane led his guards through the trees. The closer they got to the camp, the heavier the stench of rotting blood became. Broken chains and bloody steel traps lay scattered on the ground.Ahead, a chain scraped across the ground, followed by an angry shout."Get up! You think you can play dead?"By the fire, a woman so thin she
