Chapter 4

Author: Sol F
"Don't burn it!"

I lunged for the chest, but two guards held me back.

Inside were the little white wolf doll my mother had sewn for me, the family photo my father took himself, and the present they'd gotten ready for my 14th birthday before they left for the war.

I clutched desperately at the hem of Kane's shirt.

"I had nothing to do with what happened at the hospital. If you want me to apologize to Vivian, I'll go right now. Just don't burn my parents' things."

Kane didn't look at me. He only told Brody, "Do it."

Flames caught at the bottom of the chest.

I tore free of the guards and shifted into my wolf form right there, throwing myself at the fire.

The heat rolled over me in waves, and my silver-white fur was soon streaked with soot.

I clawed at my mother's doll. The flames scorched the pads of my paws, and the pain had me shaking all over.

Kane rushed over and dragged me out of the fire.

"Sandra, have you lost your mind?"

I shifted back, grabbed a rock off the ground, and raised it over my own shin.

"Vivian broke one leg. I'll break mine and pay her back. Will that satisfy you?!"

Kane yanked the rock away and clamped down on my wrist.

I fought to get back to the fire. I couldn't stop crying.

"Alpha, please... Spare the things my mom and dad left me."

In that moment, I was 13 again. The Kane who'd promised to protect me in my parents' place was destroying the last bit of shelter they'd left me, and he was doing it himself.

I'd only ever called him Uncle Kane.

When I wanted to annoy him, I'd call him old man on purpose.

When he heard me call him "Alpha," his grip tightened for a second.

But a moment later, he still turned to Brody. "Keep going."

The flames climbed higher.

One of the doll's ears blackened first, then the little dress my mother had made me. The photo my father took slid off the edge of the chest and dropped into the flames before I even had a chance to reach for it.

I stopped fighting. I just stared as the photo burned to ash.

Everything blurred in the firelight, but I couldn't even cry anymore.

Kane let go of me. His voice was ice-cold.

"Now that you know you were wrong, stay home and think about what you did."

Then he left.

The floating text kept popping up.

[Kane's doing this to protect you. Somebody spread the story about Vivian losing her job and breaking her leg all over the Alliance, and tons of people are trashing you. He needs the cameras to catch you being punished so he can shut the gossip down.]

[But this time he really went too far. Those were her parents' things...]

[He told the guard to burn a box of old junk that didn't matter! The guard must have grabbed the wrong one.]

I looked up at the security camera on the courtyard wall.

It was pointed right at the fire.

I went back to my room and dug out every gift Kane had given me over the years.

There was the moonflower Kane brought back from the border on my 14th birthday. I'd pressed it in a picture frame, and its petals had long since dried out.

There was the hunting knife and the jacket he gave me, and the birthday boxes I'd never had the heart to open.

Right in front of the camera, I dumped them all into the fire.

The moonflower burned fastest.

This time I just stood there and watched until it was gone.

Half an hour later, I walked out the door pulling my suitcase.

Mae ran out after me and handed me a photo.

"It all happened so fast. This was the only one I managed to grab."

In the photo, my father and mother were hugging me from either side. I was laughing so hard my white wolf ears had popped out.

"Luna Eleanor asked me to tell you not to hate Kane," Mae said quietly. "He's only trying to repay a debt."

"I know."

I put the photo away and got into the car that had come to pick me up.

I didn't hate him anymore.

As the car pulled out of the Alpha estate, I checked my phone and saw Vivian's latest Instagram post.

Nine pictures, all screenshots of her texts with Kane.

She was worried her leg would scar, so Kane found her the best healer in the North.

She ran a fever after surgery, and he sat by her bed all night.

She hadn't been left without a job in the Alliance, either. Kane had funded a charity hospital and made her its spokesperson. She didn't have to work herself ragged as a nurse, and she still got everyone's admiration.

Kane remembered she loved honey chestnut cakes from the South. He knew she was scared of thunder.

When she texted that her leg hurt, he walked out halfway through a major deal and rushed back to be with her.

All these years, I'd thought that kind of care belonged only to me. Now he was giving it to someone else too.

So in my last life and in this one, he'd fallen for Vivian without even realizing it.

In my last life, I'd been too stupid to see it, and I'd tried to wreck what they had.

In the comments, all of Kane's friends were congratulating them.

Those same friends had always looked down on me as a little girl chasing after the Alpha. Now every one of them was gushing about how gentle Vivian was, saying she was exactly the kind of Luna Moonbridge needed.

It took me seven years to fit in with them. It took Vivian a few days.

The congratulations on the screen slowly blurred behind my tears.

I blinked them away, liked the post anyway, and locked my phone.

Alpha, in this life, I'm setting you free.

A month later, we went to inspect the border between the North and the South.Kane never showed his face to me again. But every checkpoint we passed already had guards lined up for us. No one let us pay for a room, and even the roads the rogues had attacked had been cleared before we got there.Theo quickly found out that all of it had been arranged by Moonbridge. He put the report in front of me, looking deeply unhappy about it."Well, he's a man of his word, I'll give him that. He hasn't shown his face."I closed the file."He thinks this is respecting me? He's still acting like he knows best. I stopped being that little girl who loved him a long time ago."I reimbursed every expense, item by item, and asked Eleanor at Moonbridge to pass a message on to Kane for me. He needed to stop deciding what was good for me.After that, there were no more arrangements from Moonbridge along the way.Kane had finally learned how to really let go.That same month, Erin Gray, the woman who'd posed

A month later, Theo and I held our mating ceremony at the Moon Goddess temple in the South.Alliance media crowded outside the temple. Theo had never revealed who I was, so the engagement wouldn't get in the way of my work. It wasn't until the day of the ceremony that the world found out who the South's future Luna would be.Before I left, my assistant showed me what was trending on the Alliance network. Some people guessed the bride came from a noble southern family. Others had dug up the old story of Theo being kidnapped by rogues when he was seven. Rumor had it he'd spent all these years looking for the girl who'd escaped from the mine with him. They were half right. But I wasn't standing beside Theo today to repay a childhood debt. I was choosing him for myself. Before the ceremony started, I got a call from Eleanor at Moonbridge.Kane had woken up.The bolt the rogue shot had been coated with silver. He'd been unconscious for over a month, and the wound still hadn't fully healed.

Theo's fingers tightened around the chipped red agate button."You finally recognized me."Thirteen years ago, the packs of the North and South held a joint ceremony near Moonbridge. A band of rogues waited for the guards to change shifts, then snatched the children who'd come to the ceremony and demanded land and supplies from every pack as ransom.Theo and I were two of them. The rogues recognized me as the only purebred white wolf pup in the North and wanted to keep me for themselves. To get me out with him, Theo lured the guards away on purpose and took a knife to the leg. I carried him on my back into an abandoned mine, tore my coat into strips to bandage him, and then got us both out through an air shaft. The rogues chasing us were searching right outside the mine. Theo was shaking all over from the pain, but he still clamped a hand over my mouth so I wouldn't make a sound. I jammed my last iron arrow into the shaft to block it, then hauled him all the way to the far side of the

That night, I took my team out to celebrate. When dinner was over, I'd just stepped outside when Theo's car pulled up at the curb. The window rolled down. He had one hand resting on the steering wheel."Ms. Hawthorne, care to give your rival a chance to drive you home?"My coworkers were right behind me, so I yanked the door open and got in fast. We'd driven a long way before Theo finally spoke."So. When does this fiancé of yours get to come out of hiding?"He counted them off on his fingers."The logistics lead brought you coffee today. That blond wolf from the trade department asked you to go riding this weekend. And the new Beta on your team sat next to you the entire celebration."I fought back a smile and made a point of looking out the window."But we haven't had the wedding, and we haven't completed the marking. If I said I was single, I don't think I'd be wrong."Theo went still for a beat, his hands on the wheel.A few seconds later, he answered with a perfectly straight face

"Alpha!"My eyes flew open.In my dream, Kane had been a black wolf lying in a pool of blood with a bolt in his back, still guarding that once-shattered moonstone under his paw.It wasn't until I took in the files on my desk and the unfamiliar southern street outside the window that I slowly came back to the present.I'd left Moonbridge almost two weeks ago.I'd promised myself I wouldn't think about him anymore, and yet I'd dreamed about him during my lunch break.I closed my eyes and pushed down a nagging unease I couldn't explain. There were two light knocks on my office door."Come in."Theo Ashford leaned against the doorframe, amusement dancing in his pale green eyes."So I hear our unstoppable Sandra hides in her office to nap?"I closed the proposal on my desk and lifted my chin."I'm taking a perfectly legitimate lunch break. You, on the other hand, Alpha Ashford, are my competition now. If you keep showing up at my office, people will think I'm getting inside information beca

Before he left Moonbridge, his assistant brought him a long, narrow box.Inside was the moonstone necklace, freshly repaired. While Sandra lay unconscious at the altar, Kane had someone take the pieces out of her pouch and send them off to be fixed. Now there was only the faintest crack left in the stone.Kane wound the necklace around his wrist and touched the moonstone with his thumb."Wait for me a little longer."Late that night, the Moonbridge party stopped at the edge of a dense forest. The guards made the caller lead the way. He pulled aside a vine-covered stretch of wire fence and pointed to a camp glowing with firelight among the trees."She's in there."Kane led his guards through the trees. The closer they got to the camp, the heavier the stench of rotting blood became. Broken chains and bloody steel traps lay scattered on the ground.Ahead, a chain scraped across the ground, followed by an angry shout."Get up! You think you can play dead?"By the fire, a woman so thin she
