Chapter 5

Author: Sol F
The car stopped in front of an estate on the edge of Moonbridge territory.

My parents had bought it for me in secret before the war broke out.

Back then, the whole North was on edge.

Moonbridge was the strongest pack in the North. Kane's name was feared everywhere, and the vampires didn't dare set foot on his land.

So without telling a soul, my parents set aside an estate for me here.

On my 12th birthday, my mother gave me the deed. "Even if Mom and Dad aren't around someday, you'll always have a place to call home."

Later, on the day Kane came for me, I thought it was fate. I thought my parents had somehow placed me in his hands.

When I pushed the door open, the walls my father had painted were still there, and every piece of furniture my mother had picked out was right where she'd left it.

I stood in the living room, and the ache hit me a moment later.

I set the family photo Mae had saved on the nightstand, curled up on the couch, and fell into a deep sleep.

For the next few days, I didn't let myself think about Kane.

Early on the morning of the Full Moon Ceremony, Chloe, my best friend at Moonbridge, sent me more than a dozen texts in a row. She wanted me to hurry to the Moon Spring and save us a spot.

The second she saw me, she asked, "How come you haven't said 'Uncle Kane' once today? Usually it's every other sentence out of your mouth."

Before I could answer, she grabbed my phone to check the ceremony schedule. When the screen lit up, she froze.

"Where's your wallpaper?

"When your phone fell in Moon Lake, you froze yourself so badly getting that picture back you couldn't shift for three days. And now you're just changing it?"

My old wallpaper was a photo of me and Kane from when I was 14. He'd come home with a moonflower that was already wilting, and I'd dragged him into taking a picture with me.

I'd gone through a few phones since then, but I'd kept that picture as my wallpaper.

Now it was just a cold moon hanging over a snowy mountain.

A notification popped up. Moonbridge's livestream of the ceremony was about to start.

On screen, Kane and Vivian stood side by side in front of the Moon Spring, looking every inch the Alpha and Luna.

Chloe's face darkened, and she opened her mouth to start swearing.

She was so furious she turned to go find Kane, but I grabbed her.

I sighed softly. "Anyway... I'm getting married too."

It took her a long moment to process that. "To who?"

"I'll tell you once the paperwork's done."

She stared at me for a long time. Once she was sure I wasn't just saying it out of spite, her eyes went red.

"Whoever loses you is going to regret it."

Before the ceremony started, Vivian was being interviewed alongside Kane and a middle-aged couple, with pack members crowded all around them.

For the first time since I'd come to Moonbridge, I hadn't helped prepare for the ceremony.

At 13, I wasn't used to the scent of so many strange wolves, so I'd hung on to Kane's sleeve the whole time.

He was the one who led me to the edge of the Moon Spring, and he never once let go of my hand.

Now the one standing next to him was Vivian.

She walked over arm in arm with the couple and introduced them with a smile. "These are my adoptive parents. After my parents died, they're the ones who took care of me."

She shot Kane a sweet look.

"All I did was mention they had no real standing at Moonbridge. Kane pulled the elders off this year's Full Moon Ceremony and put my parents in charge instead."

The Full Moon Ceremony was the most important ritual at Moonbridge. It had always been led by the most respected elders in the pack.

Vivian couldn't hide how smug she was. "I'm so lucky to have a fiancé who looks out for me like this."

The same people who'd mocked her mixed blood a few days ago were now elbowing each other to get on her good side, and her adoptive parents' too.

She was waiting for me to blow up.

I just gave her a thin smile. "Oh."

Vivian's smile went stiff for a second. Then she took my hand like we were close.

"Oh, by the way, my leg still hasn't healed, so Kane's letting me and my parents stay at Moonbridge for now. My mom's health isn't great, and the healer says a larger south-facing room would be best for her."

She paused. "Your old bedroom would be perfect. Would you mind if she stayed there for a while?"

I glanced at the hand she had on my wrist and slowly pulled mine away.

"Moonbridge is huge, and the future Luna just happens to want my old den?"

Chloe couldn't hold back a laugh.

Vivian's expression flickered. "I'm just worried about my mom's health..."

"If she wants it, she can have it." I lifted my chin. "I don't want that room anymore anyway."

Chloe waited until they'd walked away before lowering her voice. "She was obviously testing you."

"Doesn't matter. She can have it."

It was a room I didn't want. Anyone who felt like fighting over it was welcome to it.

Kane was quiet for a moment, but he came after me anyway.

"It's only temporary," he said. "I know you don't like Vivian. Stay at a hotel for a few days, and once her mother's feeling better, you can move back. I'll have someone pack your things for you."

I stopped short.

All these days had gone by, and he still thought I was living at the Alpha estate.

It was so absurd I almost laughed, but the ache in my chest got there first.

"I moved out a long—"

"Kane, it's our turn to cut the ribbon!"

Vivian's voice drowned me out.

Kane turned and went straight to her.

Fingers laced together, the two of them took their places at the center of the altar.

That was when I noticed the diamond ring on his ring finger. It was exactly like the one on Vivian's hand.

The floating text said he was only engaged to Vivian to repay a debt.

So was wearing a ring that stood for faithfulness part of repaying it too?

I listened for a minute, lost interest, and left Moon Spring Plaza.

I was already in the car heading back to my estate when Kane finally texted.

"What were you trying to say earlier?"

I stared at it for a long time before I wrote back.

"Nothing."

A month later, we went to inspect the border between the North and the South.Kane never showed his face to me again. But every checkpoint we passed already had guards lined up for us. No one let us pay for a room, and even the roads the rogues had attacked had been cleared before we got there.Theo quickly found out that all of it had been arranged by Moonbridge. He put the report in front of me, looking deeply unhappy about it."Well, he's a man of his word, I'll give him that. He hasn't shown his face."I closed the file."He thinks this is respecting me? He's still acting like he knows best. I stopped being that little girl who loved him a long time ago."I reimbursed every expense, item by item, and asked Eleanor at Moonbridge to pass a message on to Kane for me. He needed to stop deciding what was good for me.After that, there were no more arrangements from Moonbridge along the way.Kane had finally learned how to really let go.That same month, Erin Gray, the woman who'd posed

A month later, Theo and I held our mating ceremony at the Moon Goddess temple in the South.Alliance media crowded outside the temple. Theo had never revealed who I was, so the engagement wouldn't get in the way of my work. It wasn't until the day of the ceremony that the world found out who the South's future Luna would be.Before I left, my assistant showed me what was trending on the Alliance network. Some people guessed the bride came from a noble southern family. Others had dug up the old story of Theo being kidnapped by rogues when he was seven. Rumor had it he'd spent all these years looking for the girl who'd escaped from the mine with him. They were half right. But I wasn't standing beside Theo today to repay a childhood debt. I was choosing him for myself. Before the ceremony started, I got a call from Eleanor at Moonbridge.Kane had woken up.The bolt the rogue shot had been coated with silver. He'd been unconscious for over a month, and the wound still hadn't fully healed.

  • Too Late to Claim Me, Uncle Alpha   Chapter 14 Epilogue

Theo's fingers tightened around the chipped red agate button."You finally recognized me."Thirteen years ago, the packs of the North and South held a joint ceremony near Moonbridge. A band of rogues waited for the guards to change shifts, then snatched the children who'd come to the ceremony and demanded land and supplies from every pack as ransom.Theo and I were two of them. The rogues recognized me as the only purebred white wolf pup in the North and wanted to keep me for themselves. To get me out with him, Theo lured the guards away on purpose and took a knife to the leg. I carried him on my back into an abandoned mine, tore my coat into strips to bandage him, and then got us both out through an air shaft. The rogues chasing us were searching right outside the mine. Theo was shaking all over from the pain, but he still clamped a hand over my mouth so I wouldn't make a sound. I jammed my last iron arrow into the shaft to block it, then hauled him all the way to the far side of the

That night, I took my team out to celebrate. When dinner was over, I'd just stepped outside when Theo's car pulled up at the curb. The window rolled down. He had one hand resting on the steering wheel."Ms. Hawthorne, care to give your rival a chance to drive you home?"My coworkers were right behind me, so I yanked the door open and got in fast. We'd driven a long way before Theo finally spoke."So. When does this fiancé of yours get to come out of hiding?"He counted them off on his fingers."The logistics lead brought you coffee today. That blond wolf from the trade department asked you to go riding this weekend. And the new Beta on your team sat next to you the entire celebration."I fought back a smile and made a point of looking out the window."But we haven't had the wedding, and we haven't completed the marking. If I said I was single, I don't think I'd be wrong."Theo went still for a beat, his hands on the wheel.A few seconds later, he answered with a perfectly straight face

  • Too Late to Claim Me, Uncle Alpha   Chapter 12

"Alpha!"My eyes flew open.In my dream, Kane had been a black wolf lying in a pool of blood with a bolt in his back, still guarding that once-shattered moonstone under his paw.It wasn't until I took in the files on my desk and the unfamiliar southern street outside the window that I slowly came back to the present.I'd left Moonbridge almost two weeks ago.I'd promised myself I wouldn't think about him anymore, and yet I'd dreamed about him during my lunch break.I closed my eyes and pushed down a nagging unease I couldn't explain. There were two light knocks on my office door."Come in."Theo Ashford leaned against the doorframe, amusement dancing in his pale green eyes."So I hear our unstoppable Sandra hides in her office to nap?"I closed the proposal on my desk and lifted my chin."I'm taking a perfectly legitimate lunch break. You, on the other hand, Alpha Ashford, are my competition now. If you keep showing up at my office, people will think I'm getting inside information beca

Before he left Moonbridge, his assistant brought him a long, narrow box.Inside was the moonstone necklace, freshly repaired. While Sandra lay unconscious at the altar, Kane had someone take the pieces out of her pouch and send them off to be fixed. Now there was only the faintest crack left in the stone.Kane wound the necklace around his wrist and touched the moonstone with his thumb."Wait for me a little longer."Late that night, the Moonbridge party stopped at the edge of a dense forest. The guards made the caller lead the way. He pulled aside a vine-covered stretch of wire fence and pointed to a camp glowing with firelight among the trees."She's in there."Kane led his guards through the trees. The closer they got to the camp, the heavier the stench of rotting blood became. Broken chains and bloody steel traps lay scattered on the ground.Ahead, a chain scraped across the ground, followed by an angry shout."Get up! You think you can play dead?"By the fire, a woman so thin she
