Chapter 1 A Return That Stirred Old Storms

作者: Bowl of Rice
The chauffeur had been waiting at the airport entrance for quite some time before driving me slowly toward Sycamore Manor.

Cameron Jennings had given me that manor as a gift back when we got engaged. Although five years had passed, it seemed that nothing much had changed since my departure.

"It looks about the same as when I left… though the sycamore trees do seem a little taller."

Cameron let out a soft, gentle laugh on the other end of the call. "Trees grow slowly. You shouldn't notice that much in five years. People, on the other hand… I heard those three went to the airport to meet you. You don't sound too happy. Did they upset you?"

I pressed my lips together, a sliver of irritation rising to the surface. "Not really. I just don't understand them. Cameron… why do people change so suddenly?"

There was a brief silence before I heard him sigh softly and say, "Grace, sycamore leaves never turn yellow all at once. That's the same when it comes to people."

I didn't respond. Instead, I shifted the topic, my tone turning brighter. "Well, moving on. How's our son? Is the poor thing still suffering from diarrhea?"

Cameron turned to glance behind him and answered, "He's doing much better now. He just fell asleep. Do you want to see him?"

A few seconds later, my phone buzzed.

I opened the photo. Soon, the sight of a tiny three-year-old boy curled up in his bed greeted my eyes. His long lashes rested against his cheeks, and his face was flushed with a warm pink as he slept soundly like a little piglet.

The faint heaviness in my chest was soothed in an instant by that small, peaceful face.

"What did the doctor say?" I asked.

"They said he's just got a sensitive stomach from the seasonal change. He'll be fine after some medicine and sleep. I postponed our private flight to tomorrow. I'm sorry. I probably can't make it to Old Mr. Walker's birthday banquet tonight.

"If you don't feel like dealing with it, I can call the Walker family for you."

I picked up the invitation beside me and shook my head. "I'll go. Why should I avoid them? I wasn't the one brought up cutting ties back then."

After the call ended, Cameron stood there holding his phone for a while, lost in thought. When he turned around, he noticed a slight movement coming from the child's bed.

A tiny hand pushed the blanket aside. Then, Zachary's messy head of hair peeked out from the covers. "Daddy, I think I heard Mommy's voice on the phone. Did Mommy call because she misses you?"

Cameron bent down, smiling as he ruffled his son's hair. "No. I called her because I missed her. Do you still feel unwell? If you're better, why don't we go see Mommy now?"

Zachary nodded eagerly, jumping straight out of bed. As he hurriedly put on his clothes, he chirped, "Okay! I miss Mommy, too!"

Cameron chuckled and reached out to straighten his son's crooked collar.

Although it was a tad troublesome to change their private flight on such short notice, it was hardly impossible. Besides, what was a little inconvenience if it meant seeing her sooner?

After all, he didn't want her to face any obstacles alone if he could help it.

Dusk settled in.

I was led by a server at the entrance and eventually arrived at the banquet hall of Walker Manor.

The moment I entered, I heard the gasps and murmurs ripple through the crowd.

"Damn, Grace Lent actually showed up. This is going to be some good, switched-at-birth heiress drama. Who do you think they'll side with?"

"My bet's on Brooke. Mr. Walker has spoiled her beyond reason over the past five years. Didn't he name an asteroid after her just the other day? Grace never got that kind of treatment back then."

"Same. Brooke, for sure. Adrian and Simon treat her like she's the center of their world. One personally helped her start a business, and the other poured real money into investing in her company. That's what you call a true favorite. Grace? She's ancient history."

The chatter overlapped in a noisy buzz, and I found myself amused all over again.

I hadn't come tonight out of anything more than basic courtesy. My plan was to deliver the gift, offer a few polite words, and then leave. I was human, not some zoo animal. I had no interest in putting on a show for others' entertainment.

So, I stuck to my plan and decided to leave early after exchanging a few pleasantries with Old Mr. Walker and making a decent-sounding excuse.

I had just turned toward the exit of the banquet hall and had barely taken a few steps when a clear, bright female voice called out, "Grace!"

I turned around, and there she was—Brooke.

The day I left, the weather was clear and bright.Zachary was brimming with excitement for the upcoming flight, nestled in Cameron's arms as he pointed out different aircraft models. His soft, childish voice carried one question after another due to his seemingly bottomless curiosity.Just then, a flight attendant approached us with a polite smile. "Mrs. Jennings, a gentleman at the front desk asked us to pass this to you. He wished you a pleasant journey."I was a little surprised as I accepted the small box.It was light in my hands. The packaging was simple, without any ribbons. All it had was just a fresh sprig of white lily of the valley pinned to the edge of the lid.The flower's meaning was "the return of happiness." It felt oddly fitting.I looked up. "Where is he?""He's already left. The gentleman didn't leave his name. He only said he was an old friend. He left in a hurry after confirming that we would deliver it to you."An old friend?A quiet guess formed in my mi

The sun shone brightly yet gently on our last day at Sycamore Manor. Most of our luggage had already been packed as we would be taking the private jet back to Westeria early the next morning. When the housekeeper knocked and entered, there was a hint of uncertainty in his expression. "Ma'am, a Ms. Brooke Lent is here. She's at the door and says she would like to see you."I was a little surprised, but I nodded. "Let her in. I'll be there shortly.""Yes, ma'am."Brooke and I sat facing each other. I lowered my gaze, letting it pass over the dark coffee in front of her before speaking softly to the maid standing nearby. "Replace Ms. Lent's coffee with chamomile tea. If I'm not mistaken, she doesn't like coffee."The maid acknowledged and left.Brooke was clearly taken aback by my words. A complicated emotion flickered across her face before she lowered her eyes and said quietly, "Thank you, Grace."The tea was brought in quickly.Brooke wrapped both hands around the warm cup but

I gave a quiet hum of acknowledgement and leaned back against the headboard, my voice still slightly hoarse from sleep. "You got the package?"Simon fell silent for a moment before answering, his mood subdued. "I did. You didn't even take a single bite, did you?""I can't handle things that are too sweet anymore. I appreciate the thought, but it's fine." My tone remained even. The line went quiet again. After a long pause, Simon spoke once more. "But you sent the agreement back too."I pressed my fingers to my temple, unwilling to circle around the topic any longer. "Simon, you already gave that villa away to someone else. Then, you took it back and tried to give it to me again. Don't you think that's a bit much?"He seemed caught off guard by what I had to say, his breathing hitching for a brief second before letting out a self-deprecating laugh. "I'm sorry, Grace. I just keep feeling like I should do something, like if I do something I'll feel a little better. Even if it's just

"Mm." I answered lightly, almost casually. "I'm doing very well now. My personal brand will launch its first skincare product next spring. The lab results look excellent, so I'm confident in it. My husband, Cameron, is gentle and strong. My son is sweet and sensible. "My life feels complete with the two of them by my side."As I spoke, I watched the faint glimmer of hope in Jace's eyes dim, little by little, until it went out completely."As for the past… I hardly think about it anymore. Even my memories of how it used to be have grown blurry. Sometimes, I can't tell whether those things really happened, or if they were just part of a very long nightmare."A breeze lifted the ends of my hair. I raised my head again and looked at Jace calmly, offering him a small, relieved smile."As for those things we said when we were young, about us getting married, about us staying together forever… Jace, you didn't take them to heart. So, neither did I."I promptly turned and sauntered away

"Yes, sir," Frank replied.Cameron's thumb brushed lightly over the back of my hand, slow and soothing. "You don't look too good. Did they give you trouble again? Do you want me to give them a warning?"I shook my head and tightened my grip around his hand, my fingers threading between his."No. Who could possibly bully me? I just…" I paused, trying to find the right words. "I feel a little disappointed. I admit, there was a fire in my chest when I left. I felt wronged, resentful, and angry. I felt like the whole world had turned its back on me."When I came back, I'd imagined countless ways things might go. How I'd argue, how I'd push back, and finally, how I'd make them taste what it felt like to be misunderstood. But from the moment I saw them at the airport… it suddenly felt pointless."As I watched them act like they were facing a great enemy as they carefully shielded Brooke and watched Brooke try so hard to imitate me… The resentment in my eyes cleared as I observed with

Cameron wasted no time coming to my side and reaching out to me, subtly prying Jace's fingers away from my wrist. "Mr. Walker, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Grace's husband, Cameron Jennings."Jace's eyes widened, his entire body freezing in place. The storm in his gaze shifted, slowly and with difficulty, from Cameron's face to mine.I nodded without hesitation. "Yes. Jace, this is my husband, Cameron."Then, I lowered my head slightly and gently stroked Zachary's soft hair. "And this is my son, Zachary."Jace looked as if he had been shattered by that statement, his voice tremulous as he breathed, "Grace… y-you're really married?"Behind him, Adrian, Simon, and Brooke in her tear-streaked glory hurried over as well.Evidently, they heard everything as the expressions on all three of their faces mirrored the same stunned disbelief.Adrian's mouth parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something, but nothing left his lips. Simon's composure cracked into visible confusion be
