Chapter 5

Author: You to You
Everyone was discussing who might have held Alora back. After all, she was the iron figure who'd shown up for every meeting without fail over the years.

She finally arrived when the meeting was nearing its end, accompanied by a man in a suit. I could tell right away that the man was none other than Logan.

Alora was grinning from ear to ear as she introduced everyone to Logan. "This is Mr. Fuller. He'll be one of us from today onward."

Logan had graduated with honors from a business school abroad and boasted top-tier professional skills. He looked like the perfect match for Alora as they stood side by side.

Some of my co-workers recognized Logan from the picture Alora kept on her desk and immediately burst into loud, enthusiastic applause. Everyone teased Alora and tried to pry more information out of her, but she smiled through it all.

A few others glanced at me. I'd been with Alora for seven years, and anyone could tell that my relationship with her was unusual. But under the circumstances, no one was going to say anything.

Everyone naturally assumed it was nothing more than one-sided love on the part of a poor young man like me.

I didn’t deny it. It was the truth, after all.

Logan's gaze swept over me, betraying no emotion.

He never cared about the lovers Alora kept over the years, or he wouldn't have waited until now to come home from abroad.

He had an instinctive trust in their bond. Aside from being lovers, they had once been evenly matched partners fighting side by side.

Alora and Logan left together after the meeting. She linked arms with him and leaned on his shoulder. A dazzling smile I'd never seen before bloomed across her face.

The head of human resources looked shocked when he received my resignation notice. "Elliot, you're a hard worker. You'll have a bright future here with us. You and Ms. Sheffield may have had some disagreements, but you should think this through.”

He put it tactfully, but I understood what he was implying. After all the years I'd spent warming Alora's bed, I should know what was expected of a lover and do everything I could to secure more for myself.

What need did a poor man like me have for pride?

I made no reply and simply left my notice on his desk.

I didn’t have many things at my workstation. The only thing displayed prominently was a collection of figurines.

When blind boxes had been all the rage, my classmates were always discussing them, so I’d asked a friend to order a whole set from abroad for me.

Before I could give it to Alora, however, I noticed the latest diamond tennis bracelet dangling from her wrist. On the back of its charm was a delicately engraved letter “F.”

I opened the blind boxes and displayed the figurines on my desk. They were nothing more than cheap resin trinkets, hardly presentable enough to give to someone like her.

They served as a constant reminder that Alora and I were from two different worlds.

My resignation would be reviewed and approved by the end of the week. Once I completed the handover next week, I’d be free to leave.

My heart tightened painfully. I was tearing away the love I’d held onto for Alora all these years.

How was I supposed to forget you, Alora?

Gemma texted me again, inviting me to an art exhibition on Sunday.

She’d often texted me and asked me to go out with her since our date, but I had politely turned her down every time. This time, perhaps because I knew I would soon be leaving, I agreed.

Gemma sent me an animated sticker of a nodding kitten. She was weird like that.

Alora hadn't sought me out the last few days. She'd already erased me from her world. Still, I came across her Facebook updates from time to time. From the looks of it, she and Logan had moved in together and even met each other's parents.

Everything seemed to be falling naturally into place.

On Alora’s Facebook profile, there was a pinned post she had shared on the day Logan returned from abroad.

Logan's younger brother had taken over the family business, leaving no place for Logan even if he returned.Alora kept Logan's position in her company for him. She'd made up her mind to give him 40% of the company shares, practically handing over the reins to him. He'd rescued her company before. Now, she had nothing else to offer him, only a repayment of his favor. As for Elliot, she'd managed to find out his whereabouts from Gemma and learned that he'd gone to Frinsor. All Gemma told her was that she wished Elliot only happiness.Just like that, Alora traveled to Pareus countless times, all so she could tell Elliot she loved him in person. But now that she had, she was met with only silence.…"Can we start over, Elliot? Let me love you for a change," she begged me with tears in her eyes.I shook my head. "You saved me once, Alora, and I've nothing to give you but love. Our story never began with love. You wanted a companion, and I wanted money. At the end of the day, what we

Alora sought out Gemma, only to earn a hostile look from the latter. No longer did Gemma greet her warmly by her first name. Instead, she impassively demanded that Alora state her business.Alora asked Gemma for Elliot's whereabouts, but Gemma shot her a grimace. "Seriously, Alora, how low can you stoop? How long will you continue to torment Elliot for? Did you set me up with him so you could use me to hurt him?"Well, you thought wrong. I actually like him, and I have since college. He might just be a lover you keep for fun, Alora, but to me, he'll always be the college senior who sits at the front of the class."Gemma's voice began to crack at the end. She was even more devastated than Alora. While Alora could pull out all the stops in her frantic search for Elliot, Gemma was powerless to do so.She could tell Elliot was still in love with Alora when he left.Alora returned home crestfallen, Gemma's words replaying in her head like a broken record. For the first time, she was se

"I spent a long time searching for you after you left, but I didn't know where you'd gone." Alora was bare-faced, and she looked even paler against her brown coat."Alora, you—""Shh, don't speak. Let me look at you, alright?"She sat with me under the tree and watched as the maple leaves fell around us. She seemed to be lost in thought as she twirled a leaf stem between her fingers. "Before we met, I hated this city. Pareus took away my freedom and robbed me of love."It seemed every misfortune in my life started in Pareus. But now, seeing you carve a life for yourself here, I'm suddenly thankful for it. This city led me to you. Do you still hate me, Elliot?"I opened my mouth to say something, but words eluded me in the end.A hurt look crossed Alora’s face. She leaned into the bench, a mark around her ring finger a clear sign of where her engagement band had been."I used to think of you as just another toy. If I'm being honest, I never took you seriously back in the day. But

I hailed a cab right away and headed to the company. It was only eight in the evening. The lights in the company were still on, and some of my former co-workers were working overtime. The lights in Alora's office were still on, too. Almost without realizing it, I found myself standing outside her door. Was she working overtime? She was always working too hard."Just be honest with me, Alora. What is your relationship with Elliot?"It was Logan. He was seated on the couch, and his eyes were rimmed with red.Alora had her back turned to me. All I heard was her voice as she replied, "Oh, him? He's just a pet I picked up and toyed with when I got bored. Don't tell me you're jealous."I peeked through the gap in the door and saw Logan's stormy expression. Grinning, Alora pounced on him like a playful kitten and kissed the corner of his mouth. "He's nobody. All I did was give him a bit of pocket money, and that was enough to make me his god."It's all your fault, anyway. I'd never hav

"Excuse me." I brushed past Logan and left him alone with Alora in the corridor. Our get-together ended on a sour note.Gemma offered to drive me home. She flashed me her usual mischievous smile. "You walked me home the last time, Elliot, and it so happens that you didn't come in a car this time."Under Alora's dark, baleful gaze, I opened the car door and slid into the passenger seat of Gemma's car.Gemma was a good driver, but she spent the entire drive talking about Alora. From the bits of information she'd fed me, I managed to piece together Logan and Alora's history.Alora was not the Sheffields’ only child; her younger brother had died not long after his birth. Her mother had soon been admitted to a care facility after crying every day over the loss of her child and going mad with grief.Alora's father was weak and a hopeless cause. He had no choice but to leave the company to his relatives.Fortunately, Alora was razor-sharp and highly intelligent. She'd gotten her high s

  • Too Late to Love Me   Chapter 7

Alora opened the conversation by asking Gemma and me how far along we were in our relationship.Gemma's smile was a little forced as she cut me a look out of the corner of her eye.I finished slicing Gemma's steak, then answered slowly, "We're still getting to know each other."Alora probably just wanted to know whether I was following the path she’d planned for me. So I decided to give them the reassurance they wanted.Logan remained expressionless as usual. He sat at the table and listened while we talked, occasionally checking and replying to messages on his phone."The both of you look good together. You should consider taking the relationship further.” Alora stared at me evenly, her words heavy with implication.I nodded. "I should thank you for introducing me to Gemma. I'll make this opportunity count."Confusion flickered in Gemma's eyes. She crumpled the napkin in her hand, then lowered her gaze to the sliced steak on her plate.Logan answered a phone call and excused h
