Chapter 3

Author: Sparkling Pear
Julian could barely stay mounted at a walk. He'd fallen from a horse as a child and avoided riding ever since. Racing Edward, an expert horseman, was absurd.

But he gripped the reins. "All right."

They lined up with their chosen horses. At the whistle, Edward surged forward. Julian followed, struggling merely to keep his mount under control. Soon Edward was far ahead.

He had to win.

In desperation, he pulled a pin from his cuff and jabbed his horse in the hindquarters. The animal panicked and bolted. Julian clung to the reins as the sudden acceleration tossed him from side to side.

Edward stared in disbelief as Julian's horse flew past him. Then it bucked wildly, throwing Julian several yards across the track.

"Julian!" Edward shouted.

...

At the signing ceremony between Sterling Group and Westbridge Holdings, Edward shook Vivienne's hand after both companies completed the agreement.

"Ms. Sterling, you have an extraordinary husband."

She blinked. "You know Julian?"

"Know him? He raced me to win this deal for you. Took a terrible fall, too. I've never seen someone try so hard for his wife."

Vivienne went still. Julian hadn't said a word. So that was why the negotiation had suddenly gone so smoothly.

When she returned home, she found him alone in their bedroom applying ointment. His shoulders, back, and arms were mottled with bruises.

"You..."

He startled, hurriedly put on a shirt, and turned around. "You're home early."

"Those injuries. You got them riding with Edward?"

He hesitated. If she knew, the deal must be done. He smiled faintly and lowered his head, as if afraid she'd see the love in his eyes.

"I'm your husband. Of course I should support your work. Besides, I owed you an apology for throwing your things out."

His mild smile made his injuries seem even worse. For the first time, guilt pricked Vivienne's heart. She had always regarded Julian as her family's chosen spouse, never truly as her partner.

"Isn't your birthday coming up?" she asked. "What would you like?"

It was the first time since their wedding that she'd ever brought it up.

He looked up, hope brightening his face. "Could we have dinner together that night?"

For years she'd been working or traveling on his birthday. The request was so modest that even she felt a pang.

She nodded.

A week later, the day before his birthday, Julian was tidying her study when the desk phone rang. Vivienne wasn't there, so he answered.

It was Vivienne's assistant, Clara Bennett. "Ms. Sterling, I've secured a reservation at Larkmoor's most exclusive restaurant. The rare roses you ordered have just been flown in from the grower. Any other instructions?"

Julian's heart jumped. Surely all this was for tomorrow.

Vivienne entered just then. "Your assistant," he said, handing her the phone.

She took it. Julian tried not to let his excitement show as he left the room.

On his birthday, he got up early. Vivienne left for work without mentioning the occasion. He almost reminded her, then remembered the restaurant reservation. She must have work during the day. She'd see him tonight.

He waited all day, dressing carefully in colors that matched hers. Ten o'clock passed, the time she usually returned. The house stayed silent.

Still, she'd promised.

He sat on the sofa watching the clock until it passed midnight. His anticipation slowly drained away. Then he remembered the roses. Roses weren't something she would buy for him.

A dreadful suspicion formed.

He opened his phone and searched Elliot's social media. They moved in the same circles, and he'd followed Elliot years ago.

Elliot had posted a few hours earlier. His location was Larkmoor.

"Home at last."

The attached photographs showed an elegant restaurant, a plate piled with shrimp someone had peeled for him, and dew-fresh roses on the table.

And sitting across from Elliot, watching him with a look both tender and restrained, was Vivienne.

One month later, Julian and Leo stood on a hillside above Port Aurora. Before them was a new black gravestone. The photograph set into it showed Vivienne Sterling, young and beautiful. They remained there until evening, when the wind stirred their hair and the last light faded from the water. Only then did they begin the walk downhill.Julian leaned on Leo, his eyes wet."I'm sorry, Leo. I knew what was happening, but I didn't tell you.""Don't be silly," Leo said, gently ruffling Julian's hair. "I know. You were trying to protect me.""You really liked Vivienne, didn't you?""I did." Leo smiled at the sunset. "She was a lot older than me, but she was one of my best friends. She told me something, Julian."He looked up, his expression steady."She said her health was getting worse, and she wouldn't be here to look after you. She wanted me to recover so I could protect you for the rest of my life."Julian's eyes filled again. "I'm lucky to have you.""You deserve happiness,"

Vivienne's gaze stayed cold.Elliot stiffened. Hurt flashed across his face, followed by anger."You're that desperate to give him everything?""Julian took nothing when he left," Vivienne said. "He doesn't even know what I've arranged for him since. And there's another thing. We never finished the divorce. We're still married."Elliot stared. "You're... still married?"They'd once come within days of holding their own wedding, and now she was telling him the first marriage had never legally ended."You saw me tear up the papers Julian left," Vivienne explained. "Later I had a new agreement drawn up and made arrangements to divide the property, but I couldn't find him to complete it. I'd considered having his attorney verify his signature so our wedding could go ahead. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. And I realized I wasn't searching for him to get a signature. I was searching because I loved him."The instinct to seek him out every time something went wrong had been love, eve

"About what?" Maren asked.Julian bit his lip. "Vivienne gave me a report showing she's a potential match for Leo. I'm afraid something might happen to her, and I won't be able to stop it. And if something happens to Leo... I don't know what I'll do."Maren thought for a moment. "There are other potential donors in the world. Their lives don't have to depend on each other. I'm sure the doctors will keep looking for the right heart for Leo.""You're right," Julian said, though his smile was faint. He couldn't shake the feeling that Vivienne was running out of time. The fear had seized him the moment he'd seen her test results and refused to let go.Maren rested a hand on his shoulder. "Try not to think too far ahead. Focus on caring for Leo."He nodded....Vivienne went to a bar instead of home. She sat alone in a dim room, smoking and watching the smoke disappear. Memories of Julian crowded her head: his stubbornness, his persistence, his coldness, his fragility.Frustrated,

It was the weekend. By the time Julian woke, the sky was dark and the other side of the bed had gone cold. He lay still a moment, then got up to wash and dress. When he opened the window, stars glittered over Port Aurora. The sight lifted his spirits. His phone rang."Julian, are you finished with work?" Vivienne asked."It's the weekend. I wasn't working.""I'm near the hospital. Could you meet me? There's something I'd like to discuss."After a pause, he agreed. He found her leaning against her car. She watched him approach with an intensity that made him look away. He took the passenger seat, and she fastened his seat belt before walking around to drive."What did you want to tell me?""Tea or coffee?" she asked."Coffee."They stopped at a nearby cafe. After ordering, they sat in silence. Finally, Vivienne took a document from her bag."These are Leo's test results and mine. We're compatible."Julian unfolded the report. It described the medical matching that could ma

After bringing Leo back to the hospital, Vivienne began visiting him often. Julian didn't stop her. She'd saved the boy, and gratitude was only fair. Besides, they already knew each other. But he never let her get close to him. When they spoke, it was almost always about Leo.Vivienne didn't seem discouraged. She came more frequently, bringing books, snacks, and small things the boy enjoyed. Julian remained on the sidelines. One day, Leo looked up from his bed."Julian, don't you like her?"Julian said nothing."Do you hate Vivienne?"He frowned. Hate wasn't quite right. Seeing her simply brought back memories of years he wished he could erase. Her constant presence irritated him, even when he knew she meant well.Leo glanced toward the door and lowered his voice."Then next time she comes, tell her to leave."Julian blinked. "Why would I do that?""Because you don't like her. And you're more important to me."Julian's eyes stung. He smoothed the boy's hair."How I feel ab

Julian hesitated. "She...""She's the one who helped me and brought me back," Leo explained. "I never thanked her. I owe her an apology, too. I was upset and snapped at her."Julian had been so focused on Leo that he hadn't noticed where Vivienne went."Maybe she had something else to do," he said with an awkward smile."Do you have her number? I'd like to talk to her myself." Leo paused. "I was crying and saying I was never going to get better. She tried to cheer me up. She even told me she'd had cancer, but she'd fought through it. She said I had to believe in myself and in miracles."Cancer?Julian stared at him. Surely Leo had misunderstood. Julian used to arrange every one of Vivienne's annual checkups. Three years earlier, her reports had said she was healthy. How could she have cancer without him knowing? He called her and handed Leo the phone."You can thank her yourself."Vivienne hesitated when Julian's name appeared on the screen, then picked up."Hello?""Hi, Viv
