Chapter 8

Author: Sparkling Pear
He's not as important as you are.

The words hit Julian like a blow. He stood outside the hospital room, hollowed out, every breath painful.

Was this the marriage he'd spent three years defending? An indescribable sorrow welled up in his heart.

He finally understood: he would never win Vivienne's heart. In a marriage without love, he'd lost before it even began.

When she stood him up on his birthday to welcome Elliot home, a small part of him had wanted a divorce. Now all of him did.

He returned to his room and cried until his pillow was soaked. Then he took out his phone and called his attorney, Gregory Lawson.

"Mr. Lawson, could you prepare a divorce agreement for me?"

...

During his recovery, Vivienne spent her time looking after Elliot. She didn't visit Julian once, although she sent nutritional supplements through Clara.

They finally saw each other after he was discharged. Vivienne stood beside a suitcase in their bedroom. She was leaving for a business trip to Cedarholt.

Normally Julian would have joined her, handling everything from packing to hotel arrangements. This time he remained still.

"My head's still a little dizzy," he said. "I won't come with you."

Vivienne studied his drawn face. Only then did she notice how much weight he'd lost since the crash. She had devoted every thought to Elliot, assuming Julian would quietly endure her neglect as always. He was the model husband, never demanding, never troublesome, even without a place in her heart.

But something about him felt different.

She was about to speak when she noticed the time. "Get some rest," she said instead.

That evening she boarded her flight.

She didn't know that, back at home, Julian was staring at his wedding ring and making a decision.

She'd never dared to ask Elliot the question that mattered. He would ask it for her.

The next day, Julian arranged a proposal scene in a hotel suite. He covered the walls with Elliot's favorite roses, lit his favorite scented candles, and poured his favorite wine. Across a wall of flowers, enormous letters spelled MARRY ME.

When Elliot arrived, he stood speechless.

Julian stepped out from behind the roses.

"Julian? What is this?"

"I arranged Vivienne's proposal for her," Julian said calmly. "Do you like it?"

He slipped his wedding ring off and took Elliot's left hand. Slowly, he placed it on Elliot's ring finger. It fit perfectly. Better than it had ever fit Julian.

Perhaps it had never really belonged to him.

Elliot stared. "What are you doing?"

Julian laid out ninety-nine airline tickets and ninety-nine carefully chosen gifts.

"In the three years you've lived overseas, she flew out to see you ninety-nine times. Every trip, she carried a gift and the hope of telling you she loved you. She never found the words. First you told her you wanted to stay friends. Later, she was married to me."

He held Elliot's gaze.

"When you're upset, she's there. When your stomach hurts, she brings you soup in the middle of the night. When your life is threatened, she uses her body to protect you. You know why. That's not some innocent friendship. She loves you more than anything.

"So why keep pretending not to see it? You love her too, don't you? Whatever game you're playing, nothing lasts forever."

Julian stepped back.

"I've made the proposal she was too afraid to make. Think about what you actually want. And don't worry about me. I'm divorcing her. I don't want her anymore. I wish you both happiness."

He left without waiting for an answer.

At home, he packed methodically. Three years of marriage, and everything he wanted to keep fit in a single suitcase.

He signed the divorce papers and left them in plain sight on the coffee table. Then he looked around the house one final time. There was no longing left in him.

"Goodbye, Vivienne. For good."

He walked out without looking back.

One month later, Julian and Leo stood on a hillside above Port Aurora. Before them was a new black gravestone. The photograph set into it showed Vivienne Sterling, young and beautiful. They remained there until evening, when the wind stirred their hair and the last light faded from the water. Only then did they begin the walk downhill.Julian leaned on Leo, his eyes wet."I'm sorry, Leo. I knew what was happening, but I didn't tell you.""Don't be silly," Leo said, gently ruffling Julian's hair. "I know. You were trying to protect me.""You really liked Vivienne, didn't you?""I did." Leo smiled at the sunset. "She was a lot older than me, but she was one of my best friends. She told me something, Julian."He looked up, his expression steady."She said her health was getting worse, and she wouldn't be here to look after you. She wanted me to recover so I could protect you for the rest of my life."Julian's eyes filled again. "I'm lucky to have you.""You deserve happiness,"

Vivienne's gaze stayed cold.Elliot stiffened. Hurt flashed across his face, followed by anger."You're that desperate to give him everything?""Julian took nothing when he left," Vivienne said. "He doesn't even know what I've arranged for him since. And there's another thing. We never finished the divorce. We're still married."Elliot stared. "You're... still married?"They'd once come within days of holding their own wedding, and now she was telling him the first marriage had never legally ended."You saw me tear up the papers Julian left," Vivienne explained. "Later I had a new agreement drawn up and made arrangements to divide the property, but I couldn't find him to complete it. I'd considered having his attorney verify his signature so our wedding could go ahead. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. And I realized I wasn't searching for him to get a signature. I was searching because I loved him."The instinct to seek him out every time something went wrong had been love, eve

"About what?" Maren asked.Julian bit his lip. "Vivienne gave me a report showing she's a potential match for Leo. I'm afraid something might happen to her, and I won't be able to stop it. And if something happens to Leo... I don't know what I'll do."Maren thought for a moment. "There are other potential donors in the world. Their lives don't have to depend on each other. I'm sure the doctors will keep looking for the right heart for Leo.""You're right," Julian said, though his smile was faint. He couldn't shake the feeling that Vivienne was running out of time. The fear had seized him the moment he'd seen her test results and refused to let go.Maren rested a hand on his shoulder. "Try not to think too far ahead. Focus on caring for Leo."He nodded....Vivienne went to a bar instead of home. She sat alone in a dim room, smoking and watching the smoke disappear. Memories of Julian crowded her head: his stubbornness, his persistence, his coldness, his fragility.Frustrated,

It was the weekend. By the time Julian woke, the sky was dark and the other side of the bed had gone cold. He lay still a moment, then got up to wash and dress. When he opened the window, stars glittered over Port Aurora. The sight lifted his spirits. His phone rang."Julian, are you finished with work?" Vivienne asked."It's the weekend. I wasn't working.""I'm near the hospital. Could you meet me? There's something I'd like to discuss."After a pause, he agreed. He found her leaning against her car. She watched him approach with an intensity that made him look away. He took the passenger seat, and she fastened his seat belt before walking around to drive."What did you want to tell me?""Tea or coffee?" she asked."Coffee."They stopped at a nearby cafe. After ordering, they sat in silence. Finally, Vivienne took a document from her bag."These are Leo's test results and mine. We're compatible."Julian unfolded the report. It described the medical matching that could ma

After bringing Leo back to the hospital, Vivienne began visiting him often. Julian didn't stop her. She'd saved the boy, and gratitude was only fair. Besides, they already knew each other. But he never let her get close to him. When they spoke, it was almost always about Leo.Vivienne didn't seem discouraged. She came more frequently, bringing books, snacks, and small things the boy enjoyed. Julian remained on the sidelines. One day, Leo looked up from his bed."Julian, don't you like her?"Julian said nothing."Do you hate Vivienne?"He frowned. Hate wasn't quite right. Seeing her simply brought back memories of years he wished he could erase. Her constant presence irritated him, even when he knew she meant well.Leo glanced toward the door and lowered his voice."Then next time she comes, tell her to leave."Julian blinked. "Why would I do that?""Because you don't like her. And you're more important to me."Julian's eyes stung. He smoothed the boy's hair."How I feel ab

Julian hesitated. "She...""She's the one who helped me and brought me back," Leo explained. "I never thanked her. I owe her an apology, too. I was upset and snapped at her."Julian had been so focused on Leo that he hadn't noticed where Vivienne went."Maybe she had something else to do," he said with an awkward smile."Do you have her number? I'd like to talk to her myself." Leo paused. "I was crying and saying I was never going to get better. She tried to cheer me up. She even told me she'd had cancer, but she'd fought through it. She said I had to believe in myself and in miracles."Cancer?Julian stared at him. Surely Leo had misunderstood. Julian used to arrange every one of Vivienne's annual checkups. Three years earlier, her reports had said she was healthy. How could she have cancer without him knowing? He called her and handed Leo the phone."You can thank her yourself."Vivienne hesitated when Julian's name appeared on the screen, then picked up."Hello?""Hi, Viv
