Chapter 9

Author: Sparkling Pear
Vivienne's business trip lasted a week. On the final night, she stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of her hotel suite, a myriad of emotions swirling in her eyes.

Without Julian, nothing had felt right. Not the breakfast, the coffee, or the fragrance in the room. She'd stayed at this hotel many times and never had a complaint. When she asked at reception, she learned why: Julian had always arranged her breakfasts, coffee, and favorite aromatherapy himself. Because she woke so early on business trips, he often started before dawn.

She'd been miserable all week. Then, at the farewell dinner, her business partners began talking about the things her husband had done.

"Julian didn't come this time? He's usually so attentive."

"Remember the snowstorm at Eastlake Lodge last year? Ms. Sterling collapsed from gastritis, and every road down the mountain was blocked. Julian carried her all the way down on his back. He walked through snow all night. His feet were covered in blisters when he reached help."

"And the winter before, when she was hospitalized with a fever? Julian negotiated that impossible project himself. He's allergic to alcohol, but he drank with the investors until an ambulance had to take him away. That's what finally closed the deal."

"He even found those rare mineral specimens she collects. Every year he had a friend of mine overseas get one from his lab for her birthday. He traded paintings he'd collected for over a decade to secure them."

Story after story came out. Each ended with the same message.

"You have a wonderful husband, Ms. Sterling. Treasure him."

Her grandmother had said the very same thing.

Apparently everyone knew how much Julian loved her. Everyone except Vivienne.

When she'd woken in the hospital after the blizzard, only Clara had been at her bedside. She hadn't even known about the blocked roads or that Julian had carried her down the mountain. She'd credited someone on her staff with closing the difficult deal. And the anonymous minerals she'd received each birthday? Those had been from him too.

For the first time, she grasped how much he'd given to a marriage she'd barely considered worth her attention.

She wanted to see him. She wanted to ask why he'd never told her any of it.

The next morning, she took the earliest flight back to Larkmoor. She was restless the entire journey, yet beneath the anxiety was an unfamiliar anticipation.

As she hurried through the arrivals hall, she spotted a familiar figure.

"Vivienne! Over here!" Elliot waved happily.

She stopped. On his hand was a ring she knew too well.

Vivienne grabbed his fingers. "Where did you get this?"

Elliot flushed, then looked confused. "I thought this was what you wanted."

"What are you talking about?"

"Julian proposed for you a few days ago. He gave me your ninety-nine gifts and your wedding ring. He said you'd always loved me, and he was stepping aside." Elliot smiled nervously. "I've finally understood my own feelings. I don't want to be just friends anymore. Vivienne, let's be together."

Her mind went numb.

Julian had proposed to Elliot? Stepped aside? After everything he'd done for her, how could he simply give up?

Terror gripped her. Before Elliot could get another word out, she hurried past him and out of the airport.

She drove home in half the usual time, barely aware of the road. At the mansion she abandoned her car with the door hanging open and rushed inside.

"Julian!"

Only her own voice answered.

Everything that belonged to him was gone. On the coffee table lay a divorce agreement, signed by Julian.

One month later, Julian and Leo stood on a hillside above Port Aurora. Before them was a new black gravestone. The photograph set into it showed Vivienne Sterling, young and beautiful. They remained there until evening, when the wind stirred their hair and the last light faded from the water. Only then did they begin the walk downhill.Julian leaned on Leo, his eyes wet."I'm sorry, Leo. I knew what was happening, but I didn't tell you.""Don't be silly," Leo said, gently ruffling Julian's hair. "I know. You were trying to protect me.""You really liked Vivienne, didn't you?""I did." Leo smiled at the sunset. "She was a lot older than me, but she was one of my best friends. She told me something, Julian."He looked up, his expression steady."She said her health was getting worse, and she wouldn't be here to look after you. She wanted me to recover so I could protect you for the rest of my life."Julian's eyes filled again. "I'm lucky to have you.""You deserve happiness,"

Vivienne's gaze stayed cold.Elliot stiffened. Hurt flashed across his face, followed by anger."You're that desperate to give him everything?""Julian took nothing when he left," Vivienne said. "He doesn't even know what I've arranged for him since. And there's another thing. We never finished the divorce. We're still married."Elliot stared. "You're... still married?"They'd once come within days of holding their own wedding, and now she was telling him the first marriage had never legally ended."You saw me tear up the papers Julian left," Vivienne explained. "Later I had a new agreement drawn up and made arrangements to divide the property, but I couldn't find him to complete it. I'd considered having his attorney verify his signature so our wedding could go ahead. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. And I realized I wasn't searching for him to get a signature. I was searching because I loved him."The instinct to seek him out every time something went wrong had been love, eve

"About what?" Maren asked.Julian bit his lip. "Vivienne gave me a report showing she's a potential match for Leo. I'm afraid something might happen to her, and I won't be able to stop it. And if something happens to Leo... I don't know what I'll do."Maren thought for a moment. "There are other potential donors in the world. Their lives don't have to depend on each other. I'm sure the doctors will keep looking for the right heart for Leo.""You're right," Julian said, though his smile was faint. He couldn't shake the feeling that Vivienne was running out of time. The fear had seized him the moment he'd seen her test results and refused to let go.Maren rested a hand on his shoulder. "Try not to think too far ahead. Focus on caring for Leo."He nodded....Vivienne went to a bar instead of home. She sat alone in a dim room, smoking and watching the smoke disappear. Memories of Julian crowded her head: his stubbornness, his persistence, his coldness, his fragility.Frustrated,

It was the weekend. By the time Julian woke, the sky was dark and the other side of the bed had gone cold. He lay still a moment, then got up to wash and dress. When he opened the window, stars glittered over Port Aurora. The sight lifted his spirits. His phone rang."Julian, are you finished with work?" Vivienne asked."It's the weekend. I wasn't working.""I'm near the hospital. Could you meet me? There's something I'd like to discuss."After a pause, he agreed. He found her leaning against her car. She watched him approach with an intensity that made him look away. He took the passenger seat, and she fastened his seat belt before walking around to drive."What did you want to tell me?""Tea or coffee?" she asked."Coffee."They stopped at a nearby cafe. After ordering, they sat in silence. Finally, Vivienne took a document from her bag."These are Leo's test results and mine. We're compatible."Julian unfolded the report. It described the medical matching that could ma

After bringing Leo back to the hospital, Vivienne began visiting him often. Julian didn't stop her. She'd saved the boy, and gratitude was only fair. Besides, they already knew each other. But he never let her get close to him. When they spoke, it was almost always about Leo.Vivienne didn't seem discouraged. She came more frequently, bringing books, snacks, and small things the boy enjoyed. Julian remained on the sidelines. One day, Leo looked up from his bed."Julian, don't you like her?"Julian said nothing."Do you hate Vivienne?"He frowned. Hate wasn't quite right. Seeing her simply brought back memories of years he wished he could erase. Her constant presence irritated him, even when he knew she meant well.Leo glanced toward the door and lowered his voice."Then next time she comes, tell her to leave."Julian blinked. "Why would I do that?""Because you don't like her. And you're more important to me."Julian's eyes stung. He smoothed the boy's hair."How I feel ab

Julian hesitated. "She...""She's the one who helped me and brought me back," Leo explained. "I never thanked her. I owe her an apology, too. I was upset and snapped at her."Julian had been so focused on Leo that he hadn't noticed where Vivienne went."Maybe she had something else to do," he said with an awkward smile."Do you have her number? I'd like to talk to her myself." Leo paused. "I was crying and saying I was never going to get better. She tried to cheer me up. She even told me she'd had cancer, but she'd fought through it. She said I had to believe in myself and in miracles."Cancer?Julian stared at him. Surely Leo had misunderstood. Julian used to arrange every one of Vivienne's annual checkups. Three years earlier, her reports had said she was healthy. How could she have cancer without him knowing? He called her and handed Leo the phone."You can thank her yourself."Vivienne hesitated when Julian's name appeared on the screen, then picked up."Hello?""Hi, Viv
