Julia’s POV

“I know that doesn’t give you much time to prepare,” Dr. Stovard said.

Much time? That didn’t give me anytime to prepare. I wasn’t sure how to respond. On the one hand, addressing this room full of prominent people was an honor, and a huge networking opportunity. I was starting my own practice with literally no clients at all. This room was full of mental health care experts. If I gave a compelling speech, I could potentially collect a plethora of references to help build my practice.

But on the other hand, I had nothing prepared. What if I blew it? Coming up with a speech out of thin air was no small feat. This would be my first impression, and you know what they say – you only get one chance to make a first impression.

“It’s okay,” Dr. Stovard smiled politely when she saw my hesitation. “Forget I asked. It was silly of me to expect you to speak with no notice.”

She turned to walk away, but I stopped her.

“Wait,” I blurted out. Something bubbled up inside of me, excitement

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 70: Jealousy

Julia’s POVWaiting in my office for Andrew and Oliver to arrive, I wrung my hands on my lap. I’d told Mira that I had to go because Oliver needed me, and she hadn’t even hesitated to call a private car for me.“Go, go,” she’d said, kissing me on the cheek. “I’ll pick up the tab. Call me later? Yes?”I’d hurried out of the bar and come straight to the office. Was Oliver finally ready to open up to me? He’d been reluctant during our initial sessions, but maybe our time together last night had earned me enough trust from him and he was willing to talk to me about some of the things he’d been experiencing. My heart surged with anticipation as I went out to the snack fridge and grabbed one of everything. Dumping the snacks onto my desk, I heard Andrew and Oliver enter.“Can I stay?” Andrew asked.“That’s up to Oliver,” I smiled gently at Oliver. Oliver bit his lip, the same way I did when I was thinking. Then he gave a noncommittal shrug.Motioning for them both to sit down, I wasn’t enti

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 69: Martinis With Mira

Julia’s POV“So let me get this straight,” Mira said, circling her finger around the rim of her martini glass. “The house is literally on fire, and he runs back in? To fetch a stuffed animal?” She clicked her tongue and shook her head. “Either the man’s a hero, or a goddamned idiot.”Chuckling, I nodded. We were having lunch at a hot new martini bar that overlooked a promenade on the beach. The table was strewn with appetizers that Mira and were sharing: oysters on ice, caviar, bruschetta, and various cheeses and cured meats. It was a lovely little bar, with a hip vibe and colorful décor. After the dramatic morning, I’d cleared my schedule for the day, asking Sam to rebook my clients. I was exhausted from lack of sleep, since I’d stayed up late watching Oliver sleep, and mentally drained from the house fire that had almost taken Andrew’s life. That, and I was confused about my feelings for Andrew. But I hadn’t gotten to that part yet with Mira.“Yeah, I don't know which one he is,” I

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 68: Fire Fighters

Julia’s POVPanic seized me as Andrew disappeared into the smoke-filled room. I couldn’t believe that he’d gone back inside! Was he crazy? He was risking his life for a toy?“Daddy?” Oliver whimpered when he saw that Andrew had gone back in. Suddenly, there was a loud crash. I assumed it was a cupboard falling, but the smoke was so thick, I couldn’t see through it at this point.“Did he just back in?” Charlotte whispered, coming up beside me. “Why?”“For Su-Su,” Oliver told her.“You have got to be fucking kidding me,” Charlotte snapped, but I shot her a glare, warning her to keep quiet. The seconds ticked by and stretched out, feeling like hours. We all stood, our eyes locked on the door, waiting with held breath for Andrew to emerge. But he didn’t.I started to fear the worst. What if something happened to him? What if he didn’t make it out? Was this really happening? It couldn’t be.The faint sound of sirens started to fill the air. Within moments, they became louder and louder. It

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 67: The Fire

Julia’s POVMenacing black smoke fumed from the stove as the smoke alarm blared. Stunned, I stared at the counter.Within seconds, the paper napkins were completely on fire, and only moments after that, the wooden cupboards caught fire too. The room filled with the crackling of the fire as it threatened to engulf the entire kitchen.“Where’s the fire extinguisher?” Andrew demanded, rushing to the kitchen.I had no idea. I knew where I kept mine, but this was a rental unit.“Under the sink maybe?” I called out to Andrew. He opened the cupboard door and then shook his head. Grabbing Oliver, I pulled him in close to me protectively. I wrapped my arm across his chest. I could feel his little heart racing against my arm.“Get out of the house,” Andrew said to us, his eyes wild. The thick smoke had curled its way into the living room, causing Oliver to cough. “Out there. Go!” Andrew pointed to the patio door.It was all happening so fast, I didn’t even have time to think. Clutching Oliver

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 66: She’s Not a Stand-In

Andrew’s POVWith a whisk, I beat the eggs, pondering over the events of the night before. I was so lost in thought that I almost burnt the bacon, but I caught it just in time, removing it from the stove.I’d asked Julia to stay with me, to spend the night with me in my bed. I’d craved her, but had that just been lust? I’d been pretty drunk and Julia was gorgeous. Any man would desire her.Was that all it had been though? Lust? Desire? A drunken need in the night?Or was there more to it than that?As I stood there, revisiting everything, it all felt so complicated. I’d been wrong in the way I’d treated Julia. I’d dismissed her and ignored her, assuming she was only capable of cooking and cleaning.Look at what she’d accomplished, though. She was a doctor now. She had her own practice. She was successful, earning great money, living in a beautiful city all on her own.Julia was a force to be reckoned with. She was a true fighter. She’d pulled herself up and out of the ashes of our mar

  • Too Late to Regret, The Substitute Wife Left   Chapter 65: The Morning After

Andrew’s POVThe throbbing in my head was the first thing I felt when I woke up. It was like a jackhammer, pounding away inside my skull. Groaning, I ventured to open my eyes but shut them tightly when the sun hit them.Rolling onto my back, I noticed that I wasn’t in the master bedroom of the villa. Instead, I was in the guest suite. Feeling groggy, bits and pieces of the night came back to me.Julia and I had kissed. Passionately. She’d taken me home. I’d pulled her onto me in this very bed. But she’d refused me and left sometime in the middle of the night.Sitting up, I had to pause for a moment while the room spun. I’d drank way too much last night and I was paying for it now. Glancing at the clock, I saw that it was already past 9am, which meant that Oliver must be awake. So, even though my head was pounding and I felt like I was going to throw up, I stepped out of bed, pulled on my robe, and made my way to the kitchen.Sunlight flooded through the window, causing me to squint a
