The cold night air hit my skin, but it was nothing compared to the ice freezing over my heart.

“You belong to me now.

Those words echoed in the dark alley, bouncing off the damp brick walls like a death sentence. I stared up at Luther Benjamin, the boy I had loved with every breath in my body, the boy I had saved from a bullet by shattering his world into a million pieces. Now, he wasn't my savior. He was my jailer.

"You can't do this," I whispered, my voice trembling so hard the words barely made it past my lips. "You can't just buy me. I have a life. I have—"

"You have nothing," Luther interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl. He didn't yell. He didn't have to. The quiet authority in his tone carried a weight so heavy it crushed the breath right out of my lungs. "For six years, I had nothing, Maya. Every single second of my existence was a waking nightmare built on the lies you told me in the freezing rain. Now, it's your turn to see what a cage feels like."

Before I could pull away, his hand locked firmly around my wrist, pulling me toward the sleek, pitch-black Maybach idling at the end of the alley. The tinted windows gleamed under the flickering streetlights like the eyes of a predator.

"Get in," he ordered, opening the back door with a sharp yank.

"No! Luther, please, let me go home!" I panicked, planting my heels against the pavement and trying to twist out of his grip. "You don't understand, I can't just leave—my daughter—"

The moment the word ‘daughter’ slipped past my lips, I froze.

My blood ran instantly cold. My heart slammed a violent, deafening rhythm against my ribs.

I had almost said it. I had almost slipped up and mentioned Lily.

If Luther found out about Lily right now—while he was drowning in this blinding, venomous rage—he would tear her away from me, or worse, he would accuse me of having another man's child and punish her just to hurt me. I had to keep her safe. I had to protect my five-year-old little girl, even if it meant stepping straight into the lion's den alone.

Luther stopped pulling. He turned back slowly, his tall frame towering over me in the shadows. His dark eyes narrowed, burning into mine with sharp, suspicious intensity.

"Your daughter?" Luther repeated, the words tasting like poison on his tongue. A dark, ugly smirk twisted the corners of his mouth. "Ah, right. The rich man's kid. The little brat you replaced me with the very night you threw me away."

The insult pierced my chest like a knife, but I forced myself to swallow the burning tears. I couldn't correct him. I couldn't tell him that Lily had his eyes, his stubborn chin, and his quiet resilience. Let him think the worst. Let him believe I was the most heartless woman alive. As long as he didn't look at Lily, I could survive anything.

"Yes," I lied, my voice shaking as I forced myself to look him dead in the eye. "So you see, I have responsibilities. I have to go back—"

"You aren't going anywhere except where I tell you to go," Luther snapped, his patience snapping completely. He didn't wait for another word. With one effortless movement, he scooped me off my feet, throwing me over his shoulder like a sack of grain.

"Put me down! Luther! Let me go!" I shrieked, hammering my fists against his broad back, kicking my legs in wild desperation.

He didn't even flinch. He shoved me firmly into the back seat of the luxury car, sliding in right behind me before I could scramble out the other side. The heavy door slammed shut with a sickening, final thud, locking automatically from the inside.

The interior smelled of expensive leather, sharp cologne, and absolute power.

"Drive," Luther commanded the driver in front without a glance back.

The car glided smoothly out of the alley, merging into the wet, neon-lit streets of the city. I pressed myself as far against the opposite door as humanly possible, pulling my jacket tight around myself, my chest heaving with silent, suffocating panic.

“What about Lily?

The terrifying thought screamed in my head. I had left her asleep with Mrs. Gable, our elderly neighbor, who was supposed to watch her for a few hours while I worked my evening shift. But I wasn't coming home. I was being dragged away to a billionaire's fortress, and Mrs. Gable had no idea where I was.

"Where are you taking me?" I whispered into the dim lighting of the car, my voice cracking.

Luther sat beside me, completely relaxed, his long legs crossed, staring straight ahead through the windshield. He didn't look at me. He acted as though I was nothing more than an annoying piece of luggage he had to transport.

"My penthouse," he answered flatly. "You're going to live where I can keep my eyes on you. Every single hour of the day."

"I can't live with you! I have—I have things to take care of!"

Luther finally turned his head. His dark eyes met mine, cold, empty, and devoid of any mercy.

"You had a life, Maya. The night you broke my heart, you traded it away," he said softly, his deep voice sending a shiver straight down my spine. "Now, you belong to me. Every debt you owe, every bill hanging over your head, every single breath you take—I own it all. You wanted money and a rich life so badly six years ago? Congratulations. You're living in luxury now. Let's see how much you enjoy it."

I opened my mouth to argue, but the words died in my throat. There was no reasoning with him. The gentle boy who used to write me sweet, clumsy notes in high school was dead. Only the monster remained, and he was starving for revenge.

The car ride felt like an eternity. We drove past the glittering skyscrapers of the financial district, climbing higher and higher up the winding hillside roads until we reached a towering, glass-fronted residential skyscraper that looked like a modern fortress floating above the city lights.

The car pulled directly into a private underground garage. Security gates opened automatically at the sight of Luther's vehicle, closing with a heavy, secure thud behind us.

Before I could even process where we were, Luther opened his door and stepped out. He pulled my side open before I could reach the handle, his large hand grabbing my arm and yanking me out of the car with unyielding force.

"Come on," he ordered.

"Stop pulling me! I can walk!" I snapped, jerking my arm out of his grip, rubbing my bruised skin.

Luther didn't care. He led me straight to a private elevator. He pressed a black metal key card against the sensor, and the private doors slid open instantly. There were no floor buttons inside. The elevator shot upward at a dizzying speed, my stomach dropping as we rushed toward the top of the world.

When the doors finally chimed and opened, my breath hitched in my throat.

It wasn't a home. It was a cold, breathtaking palace of glass, steel, and midnight-black marble. Floor-to-ceiling windows wrapped entirely around a massive, minimalist living room, offering a panoramic, glittering view of the entire city below. The furniture was sleek, modern, and entirely monochromatic—shades of charcoal, black, and silver. There was no warmth here. No color. Just luxury so stark it felt like a cage.

Luther walked over to a sleek wet bar built into the wall, pouring himself a finger of dark amber whiskey. He took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving me as I stood frozen near the elevator entrance.

"Welcome to your new home, Maya," Luther said, his voice echoing smoothly across the cavernous room.

"It's a prison," I whispered, my voice trembling as I looked out at the distant city lights, knowing Lily was out there somewhere, wondering where her mommy was.

"No," Luther corrected, walking slowly toward me, his heavy footsteps clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. He stopped just inches away, towering over me, his gaze burning with dangerous intensity. "A prison is where you put someone who committed a crime. This is a debt collection."

He reached out, his long fingers trailing slowly up my arm, sending a violent shudder through my entire body. I hated how my skin still reacted to him, how even in my absolute terror, the phantom memory of his past touch tried to pull me in.

"Starting tomorrow," Luther whispered, his breath hot against my ear, "you will learn what it means to serve me. You will do whatever I say, whenever I say it. You wanted a rich man's world, Maya? You're in it."

He pulled back, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a sickening promise of absolute torment.

"Go to the master bedroom down the hall," he commanded, pointing a finger toward a dark corridor. "And don't even think about trying to run. The security system in this building is inescapable, and every door is locked from the outside. If you try to jump, well... enjoy the five-hundred-foot drop."

With that, he turned his back on me, walking toward a glass-walled office at the far end of the penthouse, leaving me standing alone in the freezing, glittering darkness of his cage.

I sank slowly to the cold marble floor, pulling my knees to my chest, and let the silent tears finally break free.

I had saved his life six years ago. I had taken his child into the world and protected her in the shadows. I had taken all his hatred, all his curses, and all his abuse without fighting back.

Forgive me, Lily, I sobbed silently into my hands, the terrifying reality closing in around me. ‘Mommy is trapped.

Little did Luther know, the cold game of vengeance he had just started was about to blow up right in his face. Because hidden inside my pocket, was my phone—and the emergency text I had just managed to type out to Mrs. Gable before my battery died:

“If I don't call you by morning, call the police... and protect my daughter at all costs.
