Once more, the ground beneath their feet altered.

The land ahead around the Ashlands felt soft and wet, dry and dead where. The bones of creatures long gone, and the stones and tree trunks, was covered with moss. It was a long ascent through tall twisted trees, their branches low, trailed with glowing moss that moved like breath. It was beautiful, but I didn’t feel safe.

Serakha slowed her steps. Ears twitching, the Onyx Wolf stopped too. Behind them Lucian and Arden’s eyes scanned the dense forest.

Serakha murmured, ‘This place is alive.’

“Too alive,” Arden muttered. Then, he put his hand against the bark of a tree and yanked it back immediately. “It’s warm.”

Lucian turned to look at the trees. “Are they watching us?”

“They remember,” Serakha said. “The Root is strong here.”

I swear the grove hummed softly, eerily deeper than ancient and nearly as deep as the bones of the earth. Such as neither the wind thru the leaves whispering, nor

The confined tunnel ascended in a spiral motion similar to an asleep serpent. The passage was guided by faint yet dependable glowing vines. The atmosphere shifted from oppressive because this time it felt different from all previous situations. It was peaceful now. Serakha lead forward as she gently touched the vines. The Onyx Wolf moved next to her with shadow-like closeness.Lucian trailed behind them while his sword continued to emit dim light from the moss illumination. While Arden took the rear he looked back once more before the way became hidden behind the bend.“That knot,” he said softly. “It felt... alive.”“It was,” Serakha replied. “It was truth, sealed.”None of the group uttered words as they continued their trek. Moisture-filled thermals replaced the cold mineral atmosphere making the place feel alive. Shining bugs illuminated the surrounding darkness. Somewhere, water trickled. Then the tunnel opened. They stepped into a glade.

It was a narrow, cold, damp, moss covered stone beneath their feet and the stairway let off a gentle light. The air was filled with Earth, and memory. Serakha led, her steps careful. Silent and watching too, the Onyx Wolf walked just behind her.Behind him came Lucian, holding his sword and having its blade lit up by the soft moss light. Watching their backs, Arden was the rear. It provided a sound that reached their ears as they moved deeper into the earth, but behind them the hum of the Hollow Grove was replaced by the low thrum, as if the roots themselves had a heartbeat. The stairway wound down and went down, carving a curve through the roots of the silver tree. The stone changed all the more the further they went. No longer was it rough and natural. The walls smoothed out. They were carved with spirals, eyes, leaves twisted in circles. They did, but none of them knew what they meant.Very old.Taking a pause, Serakha placed her hand on one of the sym

Once they left the mountain, the wind finally settled down. But the silence that followed didn't feel peaceful at all. It was dense, like the world was holding its breath. The light rain had stopped, and the ground felt soft under their steps. They walked across broken stones and blackened grass, away from the Heart of Stonewake. The Onyx Wolf walked beside Serakha, its head low and eyes scanning the land. Every now and then it would sniff the air, ears twitching.“We’re not done yet,” Serakha said quietly, her voice barely rising above the sound of their footsteps.Lucian looked at her. “Where to now?”“The Root is showing me… shadows,” she said. “There is a place south of here. A burned forest. That’s where we go next.”Arden frowned. “The Ashlands?”Serakha nodded. “That’s where the next wound is.”They rested briefly under a broken tree. Its bark was black, as though fire had once kissed it and never let go. Arden handed out bread

It was a cold and dark passageway. As soon as the door shut, they were in total darkness. They had a dim path forward, with only faint glow from the Root within Serakha’s chest. The damp warm stone of the walls of the tunnel, somehow, moved like the mountain itself was breathing. No one spoke for a long time. The damp air muffled their footsteps, softly. It was a hush, almost holy. It wasn’t as if they were walking into a cave; what they were into, that alive thing, was something ancient. Now the Root was humming stronger, Serakha could feel. It was almost a second heartbeat. The more they went, the louder the Stonesong was becoming. Now it had a presence, a sound. It was watching them, listening. One hand on the hilt of his blade, Lucian walked beside her. “Do you think this is what it wanted?” he asked quietly.Serakha nodded. “The Root brought us here. This is where it leads.”Leaning a lantern with flint and oil that he had lit, Arden walked ah

  • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 82: Weight of the World

The morning came cold. The air was chilly and the wind howled across the valley, tossing dust and debris in the air. Serakha laid down restless beside the fire, her eyelids were still heavy from the vision the Stone Root had shared with her. Her hands hurt her as though they held the weight of a thousand years. She stood up slowly, feeling dizzy as the earth looked fuzzy beneath her feet. The Onyx Wolf raised its head, ears on alert as it watched her closely. He could sense that something had changed.Arden had already woken up, his eyes scanned the ruins. Lucian sat near the fire, sharpening his blade. He stared into a space as his thoughts ran wild.Serakha could feel the weight of the Root in her chest. It was so heavy that It felt like a stone. It was heavy for her to bear, it didn't only hold the tree's memories from the past but also the knowledge that the world was slowly slipping away. She had always known it would happen but now it was
