Kaiden's POV

Her words lingered long after her voice had died, and I could hear them echoing back and banging off the stone walls, and seeping into my skull like poison.

End the bond.

Release her.

Or lose her.

Akira was before me--shaking, lost, scared--and all the instincts within my heart cried to draw her into my arms, to protect her against all, even death itself.

But this...

Even I could not struggle against this with my nails or strength.

Her eyes looked up to mine, and they were broad and sparkling. "Kaiden... don't listen to her. There has to be another way."

Her voice broke and it was as though something was inside my chest and was twisting.

Nay, there is not, the Oracle said.

She sounded almost sorry. Almost.

Lyrien came, his voice shaking with rage. You want him to destroy the one thing that is holding her alive? The bond stabilizes her--"

The Oracle looked at him with her radiant eyes.

It also roots the power within her. The more the connection becomes stron

  • Torn Between Two Moons   When the Moon Trembles. (chapter 116)

Kaiden's POVThe world was wrong.I sensed it in the fact that the air smelled of nothing, in the fact that the moon would not fall into her usual patterns. Wolves in the kingdoms were impatient, pacing, snapping, and could not tell what was making such a build up in their chests. But I knew.I was fully aware of what the world was responding to.Akira.Her attachment had become dumb--clean as a sword of a substance of which the gods were afraid. And since that time something inside my skin had been tearing, screaming, insisting that I locate her.I had attempted to rip half the Northern border to pieces. And still... nothing.Move aside, Ryker told me behind me. Thou art overworking thy wolf.I disregarded him, and bent my head down sniffing the ground. Nothing. No trail. No heartbeat. The earth could not even recall her footsteps. And this is what I found most terrifying.

  • Torn Between Two Moons   Echoes of the Unseen (chapter 115)

Akira's POV The Vale did not sleep. I could feel its whispers crawling beneath my skin, even with my eyes closed, as voices without mouths, memories without owners. The fog had blown them away, and bits of these fell on my ears, as though they were secrets that needed to be told. She shouldn't exist. The moon forgot her. The kings vowed to kill what she concealed... I clasped my hands behind my head till my nails sank in my head. "Stop." The whispers didn't. They never stopped. They only learned my name. Akira. A shiver tore through me. Lyrien was standing a few feet away, kneeling before what appeared to be a pool of liquid moonlight. He was not that boyish wolf, who flirts, who smiles. here in the Vale he was another--a thing hewn out of wisdom and years of suffering. You are fighting it, he said without glancing at me. "I'm trying not to drown." "It's the same thing." He was on his feet, and the silver ripples were disappearing behind him as though they had never bee

  • Torn Between Two Moons   The Wolf That Bleeds the Moon (chapter 114)

Kaiden's POV The minute the bond was gone, the world became different. Not slowly. Not gently. It broke--as sinew parting of bone, as a scream of a funeral. One heartbeat, she was there. The next... nothing. Not pain. Not silence. Something worse. Absence. I fell on the floor meaninglessly. The throne room trembled with the strength which tore at my chest. Columns cracked. Glass shattered. I did not feel any of it--I just felt that cold empty place where her soul had been resting against mine. "Your Majesty--!" voices shouted around me. I didn't hear them. I couldn't. Where was she? Why couldn't I feel her? My wolf banged against my ribs, howling, tearing, clawing me like the cage. I allowed the shift to take me, bones cracking, my flesh tearing off, fur tearing through the flesh. The guards tripped back, as I turned too quickly, too violently. The marble under my nails fractured. My eyes were clouded with silver anger. Find her. Find her. Find her. There was stil

  • Torn Between Two Moons   The Vale of Former Souls.(chapter 113)

Akira's POV Cold. Not the one that bites the flesh - the one that oozes into the bones, into the heartbeat. The one that makes you feel like a person has dragged you out of his or her own existence and suspended you between two realities. My eyes opened to mist. Silver fog, thick, and drifting about an interminable stretch of light soil. It was not snow, but seemed like it. It wasn't air, but it breathed. It was all as gleaming as moonlight and memory. I sat up slowly. There was no pain. No tether. No heartbeat that wasn't mine. I was unable to feel him, the first time, since Kaiden marked me. No pull. No warmth. No voice in the wilderness of thought. Just... me. I should have felt free. Instead, I felt empty. A shadow went by in the mist. It resembled the fog itself, which was at first drifting into a form. But as it grew nearer the air was trembling with energy. The fog cleared off him as though it were scared. Lyrien. But not the Lyrien I knew. His eyes were shining

  • Torn Between Two Moons   The Bondless King (chapter 112)

Kaiden's POV The world went quiet. Not peace of silence--the silence of nothingness. The kind that gnaws. The kind that steals. I could feel her breathing my chest, a moment later, one second, that I could feel her breath in my chest, her fear, her stubbornness, her pulse fluttering like a caught bird. The next... nothing. Not pain. Not distance. Not even a fading echo. Just gone. My knees struck the ground before I could even see that I had fallen. The restraint that I had kept so fast bound together broke, and the control over my anger was as heavy as the pressure of my wrath, in the whole throne-room. Warriors were overthrown, wolves were overthrown, and the moon himself was overthrown behind clouds. "She's dead," someone whispered. I didn't know who. I didn't care. She wasn't dead. If she were, I would be too. I ripped the floor to pieces with my nails, the shift tore me so savagely that my bones snapped like charcoal. I didn't fight it. I didn't slow it. I turned into

  • Torn Between Two Moons   When the Moon Sleeps (chapter 111)

Akira's POV The air in the Shadow Vale smelled of antique rain - cold, metallic, and laden with things that it was better not to speak of. It stuck to my skin as a second shiver, penetrated my clothing, lay in my lungs. As soon as Lyrien and I passed its threshold the world behind us had been forgotten, and a silence fell that was too complete, too final. There was no wind here. No birds. No rustle of life. Only mist waving round dead trees and bleeding earth. Kaiden is still looking at us, I whispered, but I could not see him. I could sense him, as of a phantom pain-- drawing at my heart, at the tie which still throbbed dimly under my ribs. Lyrien did not breathe, as it hurt him to respond. "Not for long," he murmured. When we get further down the Vale will cut it. You will be rid of the Blood Moon, and... Kaiden won't feel you anymore. Not the bond. Not your fear. Not your pain." His words cut a hole in the center of my chest. I choked at the pain. "And you? What will you lose
