I started to stumble backward and tripped on absolutely nothing. As a result, I came crashing down.
I ignored the pain of the impact and started running blindly, not daring to look back at the horror I just saw in the alleyway. I didn’t even turn to look to see if the man was chasing after me. Oh my God, what was that? What the actual fuck was that?I didn’t even think of an answer. I made a sharp right and kept running. I saw two guys walking on the other sidewalk across the street. I glanced at them and they stared back at me like they thought I was crazy. The reason why I didn’t tell them about what I just saw and screamed for help was because they y look like they could help me. Actually, going up to them felt like getting myself into even more trouble. No, I had to keep running until I found something that could actually help me.I looked around quickly and tried to figure out where I was. I knew this area but nothing came to mind at the moment. I couldn’t associate this place with anything. In my mind, all I heard were the words ‘he was drinking her blood’ over and over again. His mouth was covered in it and I saw how he opened his mouth for more. What…what kind of person was he? What was that?I desperately continued running. My only relief was that I wasn’t being followed by him. At least, I hoped I wasn’t. I didn’t come across anyone else as I ran. No shops were open, not that I could see, and I had no idea where I was going to go.A hotel was my initial plan but now I figured I had to go to the police or something to report this incident. That poor old lady. I feel terrible for not saving her or even trying to help her. She was just tired and she couldn’t go on. And that creep…he…I didn’t even know what he did to her or how he managed to decapitate her so fast. And her eyes, he did something strange to her eyes.It gave me the necessary courage to keep going. I couldn’t stop and be attacked the way she was and I couldn’t let him get away with this. I knew that what I did myself was unexplainable and horrible and I couldn’t understand it either. I didn’t even have time to pause and try to understand. All I knew was that that creep was bad news. He was a danger to society. He needed to be reported.I didn’t know where I could find a station around here. I was hoping I would run into a cruiser or someone, anyone who could give me their phone to call the police.Oddly enough, the streets were empty.Despair and panic flooded me. I was feeling disoriented and for an instant, I stopped running and stood in the middle of the empty sidewalk, my fingers curling in my hair. I lost all sense of direction and no longer knew what I was going to do. I stared at the inky sky and felt like I was going to pass out.And just then, to my left, I heard the sound of a bell.My head snapped in that direction so fast that I felt even dizzier afterward. I saw a man wearing a heavy black coat leaving a corner shop. My heart soared in my chest and I raced toward it. I could finally get the help I needed. I could go into the store and call for help. I’d bring that old woman justice. I’d help get that creep behind bars.I pushed the door open. The man behind the counter startled and gave me an odd look. I neared the counter and asked, “Can I use your phone?”“Why?” he asked, putting both his hands on the counter and eyeing me suspiciously.“I saw a crime back there. There was a man and he was…look, could you give me your phone? I really need to call the police.”“How do I know you’re not going to run?”I blinked for a few seconds. “What?”“We don’t have a landline and I’m not going to give you my phone.”A light scoff left my lips. “What the hell is wrong with you? I’m not going to run away with your phone. I just want to call the police!”“This man,” he began, ignoring my words, “what was he doing exactly?”“I’m not going to tell you details.”“Oh?” he said, leaning forward. He then eyed me from head to toe before looking back at my face. “What are you doing out here this late at night? You don’t seem like you’re up to anything good.”I couldn’t believe this. I thought that this place would help me yet this man was giving me a tough time. “Please,” I said. “You need to help me.”He took a deep breath through his nose and closed his eyes. I watched him, utterly perplexed. He reopened his eyes and said, “I don’t like how you smell.”My eyebrows shot up. “Excuse me?”He started to move and I did the same. My back hit the shelf behind me. The door. I had to go for the door. I wasn’t stupid enough to stay here when this man was saying such weird things. I went straight for it but it opened before I could and someone walked in.My heart dropped to my feet.No.The creep from the train. I couldn’t believe it. I stepped backward to try to put as much distance between him and me. His face was clean. There was no blood to be seen anywhere. My back hit the shelf again but this time, cans crashed to the ground. The man from behind the counter stopped walking and looked at the creep who was already looking at him.“Don’t worry,” the creep said, “I’ll take care of this.”I couldn’t believe what was happening. The two of them were…in on it? I looked back and forth between the two of them before running. I ran to the back of the store, unsure of what to do.“There’s nowhere to run, so why don’t you stay where you are?” the creep asked me.“Get the bell away from me!” I yelled.“Hey, get out of here. I don’t want this kind of mess in my shop,” the owner said as he bent over to pick up the cans I dropped.“Sorry, Dave,” the creep answered. “This won’t take long.”I grabbed the first thing I could get my hands on. It was another can. I threw it at him but he ducked right on time. The owner exclaimed when he saw the can flying and once again told us to leave. I wasn’t paying much attention to what he was saying. My eyes were on this man, this creep, who wasn’t going to leave me alone.I grabbed another can but he was lightning fast. He grabbed my wrist and squeezed, and I was forced to drop it.“We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he said through his teeth. “The choice is yours. Either way, you’re leaving with me tonight.”I was on the verge of tears. “What do you want from me?”“That’s a question for later,” he answered coldly. “For now, you leave with me and you don’t ask questions or we’re going to have a problem.”He started to drag me but I dug my heels on the floor. He looked back at me, completely annoyed. Hysterically, I said, “You killed that woman! You…you gouged her eyes out and drank her blood!”He turned around to face me, the pressure on my wrist increasing. I wanted to cry out in pain but didn’t. His words were, “You accuse me of being a killer but what about you? What terrible crime did you commit tonight?”I couldn’t answer him. My lips were glued together and my tongue grew heavy in my mouth. How did he know? How could he possibly know?“Oh, I know,” he said as if he could read my thoughts. “I know. So keep your judgment to yourself and follow me or you’re going to regret it.”“What do you want from me?” I asked again. I couldn’t admit to what he said. I didn’t know who he was or how he even knew this. I was more confused than ever.I was terrified.“As I said,” he said over his shoulder as he dragged me toward the exit. I didn’t have much strength to fight him back. “That’s a question for later. Much, much later.”I had no choice but to follow him out of the shop, where we left the owner grumbling as he cleaned the mess we made. The mess I made. I was too scared to try to free myself and at the moment, I was experiencing a mind numbness that wasn’t allowing me to rationalize and think too deeply. I was only thinking about how he knew what happened. In the train, it was almost as if he had answered a thought I had, and now, crazily and terrifyingly enough, he seemed to have done the same thing back in the shop. We crossed the street. He didn’t look from left to right and I didn’t either. I was only staring at the back of his head. His fingers were bruising my skin. He was gripping me with so much force that I was surprised my wrist hadn’t snapped in two. I could no longer as where we were going. I could only go with him wherever he wanted to take me, which was insane. He could very well be walking me to my death. He would kill me just as he had killed that old woman. Tears sprung to my eyes
“Your eyes,” I gasped as I stood. The shock made me stand and back away. “They’ve…what the hell are you!?”“Sit down,” he commanded, “and I’ll tell you.”Again, I was left without a choice. I had to sit down and do as I was told because I was already here and there was nowhere to go. I sat down but my body was inched away from him. My skin was crawling. I was more terrified than ever because I knew that he truly wasn’t human. No human could do this. No human had eyes like this. He raised a finger and showed me a contact lens. A brown one so brown that it was almost black. I didn’t even see him remove them. “First of all, I didn’t change my eye color, not the way you think I did.”I felt stupid but I knew I was onto something. “Why are your eyes that color?”“You already guessed it,” he dryly informed me. “How do you know that?” I asked in disbelief. There were more questions I wanted to ask but for now, that was all I wanted to know. I felt that it would perhaps help explain all o
I counted four of them, including the vampire. They all walked into the living area, everyone talking all at once. I couldn’t catch what they were saying because my mind was a mess and they were talking too fast. They also weren’t making much sense. I heard ‘pack’ and ‘disaster’ and immediately felt lost. When they saw me, they fell silent. There were two guys and a woman with them. She appeared to be much older than all of them and they were about the same age as the vampire. I could only stare at them as my mouth dried up. It was only after a full minute that I wondered if they were also vampires, like him. “Is that…?” one of the guys began before glancing at the vampire. He nodded grimly and his face paled. He stepped back and said, “No way. Not a chance. We’re not going to do this, Felix, not today and not ever.”Felix. His name was Felix. “You’ve got to stop with your bullshit,” the other man said. “You keep getting us in danger with this kind of reckless behavior. She’s no
Felix was out the door before I could say anything else and I had to follow him. As soon as I stepped out, he locked the door behind me. I kept looking at him and hoping that he would tell me that he was joking (considering I mentioned it earlier) but he didn’t say anything as he pushed the elevator’s button and waited for the doors to open. We then stepped into the elevator and stood alongside each other. I recalled how he was gripping my wrist and decided to look. Sure enough, it was almost black and it hurt when I flexed my hand. Great. Even so, this wasn’t enough to distract me from what he had said. I glanced at him again and he made an expression of pure annoyance. He said, “Stop it.”“Tell me you’re lying.”“I’m lying.”“Are you?”He narrowed his eyes at me and looked away. “You can’t be serious,” I argued as we stepped out into the lobby. To my absolute surprise, it was nighttime. But it couldn’t be the same day. I slept for a long time up there. Did I end up sleeping for
I didn’t dare to look over my shoulder. I was too scared. Felix kept his eyes on the people who entered. I didn’t know how many of them there were. I just assumed they were more than one. I couldn’t drink the coffee anymore. My mouth was too dry for that. “Should we leave?”“Not yet.”I was extremely curious to know but I kept looking at Felix so I wouldn’t bring unnecessary attention to ourselves. “When can we leave?”Anger flashed in his eyes. “Just wait for instructions, alright? Quit asking so many questions.”That shut me up fairly quickly. Felix’s posture remained relaxed and his face didn’t give away that he was at all bothered or uncomfortable. I heard them talk to the waitress and she answered that the food would be right up. I didn’t notice anything strange from her voice, either. She just sounded bored. After about five minutes, Felix called her over and asked for the bill. The diner was a little too silent and I could feel the tension. Maybe it was all in my head, but
Our journey came to an end when we stopped in front of a bleak mansion. This was exactly the kind of place I had in mind when I entered Felix’s clean apartment in the city center. Although the whole building with its old and creaky elevator made sense, this place right here suited him even more. The place looked like it had been around for many years, which was probably the case. It also looked haunted. It was in a residential area that was surrounded by modern homes and clean front yards. This place was the complete opposite. The grass hadn’t been watered in forever—they probably counted on the rain for that—and the tree up front was blackened like it had been on fire once and just…carbonized. “This is it,” Felix answered before crossing the front yard. We stopped when we reached the front door. There was no doorbell, I noticed. Felix raised his fist and knocked. I strained my ears to hear some movement from inside the house but it was as silent as a grave. It was startling when
I carefully slid out of bed, not wanting to make a sound. I didn’t hear the scream again but I was sure that I hadn’t dreamt it. Someone was screaming somewhere in this manor and I was alarmed. I wanted to know what it was. I had to know if I was safe. I quickly neared the door. I couldn’t remember whether it creaked or not when he opened it but I would have to take a chance. I turned the knob tentatively and sure enough, the door didn’t make a sound. I stepped out into the hallway. I wasn’t wearing my boots so I wouldn’t make a sound but I was tempted to go back and get them, just in case I would have to run. They’d be something unnecessary to carry, though, so I ignored it and kept going. I tiptoed all the way to the stairs. It was easy even though the whole area was dark. Before I reached it, I lowered myself to the floor and peered through the balusters. I could clearly see the dining area. To my absolute horror, I saw what the source of all the noise was. There was a woman s
I woke up hours later. It was disorienting that the room was still dark. It felt like the night would never end. I sat up and stretched my hands over my head. I blinked and rubbed my eyes. They felt a little heavy from all the crying I did but I wasn’t too concerned about it. I contemplated getting out of bed and venturing downstairs. I trusted that it was around daytime because it wasn’t all that probable that I slept through the day. Konstantin would be sleeping and Felix, too. I sighed before lifting the covers from my body. The manor was silent, as expected. As I tiptoed down the hallway, I suddenly remembered the woman that was strapped to the dining table. Would she still be there? If so, I’d turn right back. I didn’t have the stomach to see that first thing in the morning. Or afternoon or whatever the time of day was. When I stopped to peer through the balusters, I saw that the table was empty. Not only was it empty, it also had platters of fruits and cheese right on top.
