Chapter 2

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
My wife, Tamsin Whitlock, came over and lowered her voice. "Honey, stop making a scene."

"Like I said, there's plenty of room. We've still got three empty chairs." I glanced around the table. "What, are we saving those seats for ghosts?"

I'd made three separate trips to the restaurant to arrange this birthday dinner. I'd even handled the seating plan myself and ordered a special three-tier birthday cake. I'd paid for the whole dinner, and I had every right to sit at the table.

Marlowe leaned back in her chair with her arms crossed and sneered. "Trent, do you even know how much this meal costs? It's 680 dollars a table. If you and Elsie eat with us, there'll be less food for everyone else."

I shot her an amused glance.

"Less food?" I repeated with a laugh, refusing to back down. "You bring yourself and Milo over to my house for free meals every day, and whenever we have to squeeze in two extra chairs, you say it's fine because we're family. You've got some nerve complaining about it now."

Marlowe's face turned bright red.

Karen slammed her hand on the table. "Enough!"

Her chest heaved as she pointed at me. "Trent, when are you going to stop this nonsense? It's not like we're letting you go hungry! Kids love junk food anyway!

"Didn't Elsie say she wanted a kids' meal the other day? I was being nice by suggesting you take her there, and this is the thanks I get!"

Tamsin chimed in, "Mom's right. Elsie likes that stuff anyway. I don't know why you're so desperate to sit here and pretend you're too good for fast food."

I could hardly believe she was lecturing me about appearances when her own mother was trying to send her son-in-law and granddaughter away for fast food in the middle of her birthday celebration.

I took a deep breath, ready to respond, when I felt a gentle tug on my sleeve.

I looked down. Elsie was gazing up at me, her eyes pleading. "Daddy, can we just go?"

She sniffled. "I don't want you fighting with Grandma."

My heart ached. Elsie was such a thoughtful girl, and it hurt to see her like this. She probably couldn't understand why she wasn't even allowed to sit at the table for her own grandmother's birthday.

I looked over at Tamsin. She was watching me impatiently, clearly waiting for me to get up and leave.

"Fine," I said. "We'll go."

I couldn't bear to see Elsie upset any longer. I stood up and lifted her out of her chair. She wrapped her little arms around my neck and buried her face in my shoulder.

"Don't be mad, Daddy," she mumbled.

"I'm not mad, sweetheart." I gently patted her back.

With Elsie in my arms, I headed for the door.

Behind me, Karen spoke up. "Finally. Now can we get the food out here?"

Marlowe laughed. "Mom, you should've sent them to Popeyes ages ago. All that arguing was just a waste of time."

Just as we reached the door, Elsie whispered, "Daddy, does Grandma hate me? And Aunt Marlowe and Mommy, too?"

My throat tightened. I held her a little closer. "Elsie, sweetheart, they're the ones who don't deserve your love."

I opened my banking app. For the past six years, I'd given Tamsin and her mother access to my accounts, with a monthly spending limit of two thousand dollars each.

Tamsin only earned 400 dollars a month, barely enough to cover her own expenses. I'd been paying for practically everything she and her mother spent money on.

I revoked their access and canceled every supplementary credit card I'd given them.

If they couldn't even let my daughter and me have dinner, I certainly wasn't going to pay for theirs.

I took Elsie to the revolving restaurant on the top floor of the building next door.

The moment the elevator doors opened, Elsie gasped in amazement. She let go of my hand and ran straight to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

The entire city glittered beneath us, its streets lined with streams of headlights that looked like glowing rivers.

"Daddy, look!" she exclaimed. "The cars look like fireflies!"

Karen turned toward me, her voice cracking. "Trent, you can't do this to my daughter! Tamsin's your wife! She's Elsie's mother! If she goes to jail, what's going to happen to Elsie? Do you really want your daughter to grow up without a mom?"I turned to Kurt. "I want it on record that Tamsin lied during this investigation, and I intend to pursue the matter. Karen also knowingly gave a false statement to cover for her. I expect that to be investigated as well."Kurt got to his feet and turned to Tamsin. "Tamsin Whitlock, we'll need you to come with us."Karen completely lost it. She glared at me. "This is all your fault! If you hadn't demanded a divorce, Tamsin wouldn't have gone out for a drive to clear her head!"Even now, she was finding a way to blame me. No matter what Tamsin did, Karen still saw her as the innocent victim."Tamsin caused the accident. She fled the scene. She lied to the police, and she got you to lie for her." I looked Karen straight in the eye."Your daught

Two police officers sat across from me in the interview room.Officer Kurt Mercer brought up some dashcam footage. "We took this from your car. It clearly shows the car clipping the scooter and driving off without stopping. Now, look at this."He pulled up a screenshot and zoomed in. It showed the view from the driver's seat, but the angle was too high. All that was visible above the steering wheel was part of an arm and half a shoulder.Whoever was driving had on a dark jacket. There was no way to tell who it was."The dashcam doesn't show the driver's face," Kurt said. "That's why we need to find out who was driving at the time."He studied me for a moment. "Trent, did you drive your Mercedes at all after five yesterday afternoon?""No.""Is there anyone who can back that up?""Would my daughter's kindergarten teacher count? I picked Elsie up at 4:30 pm yesterday, then took a cab straight to the restaurant." I paused. "I can show you the cab receipt and give you the license p

I froze in the doorway. "What?"The older police officer stated, "At 11:47 pm last night, a white Mercedes with a license plate ending in 888 clipped an electric scooter, injuring the rider. The car drove off without stopping, but a witness got the plate number.""Officer, my Mercedes does have a plate ending in 888," I said, "but I didn't drive it yesterday."The younger police officer checked his notepad, then looked up. "You sure?""Absolutely," I said calmly. "I was home all night after 11:00 pm."He wrote something down. "Does anyone else have access to your car?""My wife drives it sometimes.""What's her name?""Tamsin Whitlock."The older officer nodded. "We'll need to look into that. For now, we'll need you to come down to the station and give a statement. We'll also need to inspect your car.""My daughter's still asleep," I said. "Can I take her to the neighbor's before we go?""Sure. Just don't take too long."I went back inside and carefully lifted Elsie out of

After six years of spending my money, Karen had gotten so used to it that she didn't even think twice anymore. She genuinely believed she was entitled to every penny.Karen smacked Tamsin hard on the arm. "Say something, for God's sake! Are you just going to stand there while your husband tries to take everything from you?"Tamsin looked at me, a mixture of emotions crossing her face."Trent," she said, her voice hoarse. "Can we please talk about this? Elsie's still so young. She needs her mother. Have you thought about what this will do to her?"I stared at her. So she'd finally remembered Elsie. Not because she cared, but because she thought she could use our daughter to get her way."Getting divorced doesn't mean Elsie has to grow up without a mother," I said. "That's up to you and whether you're willing to be a decent mom. A decent mom wouldn't throw away her daughter's drawing right in front of her."And she sure as hell wouldn't spend her husband's money supporting her whol

"Leave with nothing?" Karen shrieked. "Who the hell do you think you are? You can't just kick my daughter out with nothing! That car is hers!""I bought that car," I cut in. "Want me to pull up the bank statements? We can go through them line by line and see exactly how much your daughter has earned over the past six years compared to how much she's spent."Karen had nothing to say to that.Tamsin stared at the divorce papers, her fingers trembling. "Trent...""Don't," I said. "I'm recording everything you say from now on, so choose your words carefully."I took out my phone, hit record, and held up the screen for her to see.The hallway went dead silent. Then Karen burst into tears. She plopped down on the floor by the door, slapping her thighs as she wailed. "What did I ever do to deserve this? On my 60th birthday, of all days! Look how you're treating my poor daughter! God, why is this happening to me?"Marlowe quickly crouched beside her, trying to help her up while rubbing

Tamsin smiled and reached for the papers. She asked, "What's this?""Divorce papers," I replied. The smiles vanished from their faces.Karen snatched the papers out of my hand and squinted at the first few lines. "You want a divorce? Trent, what are you playing at?"She shoved the papers in my face. "Oh, don't start with me! I've seen this kind of drama before! We told you to take Elsie to Popeyes, and now you want a divorce? Are you seriously making that big a deal out of it?"I said nothing."Have you lost your mind?" Tamsin stared at me in disbelief. "You want a divorce over a stupid dinner? Trent, what the hell is wrong with you?"Marlowe jumped in. "Exactly! Trent, seriously, what have we ever done to you? You've had it pretty good with our family! You've already ruined Mom's 60th birthday, and now you want a divorce? Wait, are you having an affair?"Karen immediately turned to me, giving me a suspicious once-over. "Trent, you'd better tell me the truth. Are you seeing som
