Chapter 3

Author: Coconut Scared of Cold
I smiled, walked over, picked her up, and settled her into a seat by the window.

A server handed us the menus. Elsie opened hers, her eyes widening. "Daddy, it's so pretty here! Is it really, really expensive?"

"Not at all." I tapped her nose playfully. "You deserve the very best, sweetheart."

Throughout our marriage, Tamsin had always insisted that we shouldn't spoil Elsie or let her develop expensive habits. She never wanted me spending too much money on our daughter. But seeing how happy Elsie was that night, I knew that every penny was worth it.

My phone wouldn't stop buzzing throughout dinner.

"Trent, what did you do? My card's getting declined!

"Mom ordered the king crab platter. It's 288.80 dollars. Hurry up and fix the card!

"The server's standing right here! Can you please not screw this up?

"Trent, I'm warning you. It's Mom's birthday. Don't you dare pull anything!

"Whatever. I put it on my buy-now-pay-later account. You can pay me back later."

I dismissed every message without replying.

Then Karen posted in the family group chat. "Trent, it's my birthday today. Couldn't you have been a little more considerate? Elsie threw a tantrum in front of all those relatives, so I suggested taking her to Popeyes to have some fun. I don't understand why you had to get so upset."

I stared at the message for a couple of seconds. Elsie hadn't thrown a tantrum. She hadn't complained or argued once the entire time.

Yet with one casual message, she had managed to pin the blame for everything on a five-year-old girl.

Marlowe chimed in, "Mom was supposed to have a wonderful birthday, but Trent showed up with Elsie and caused a scene. Now Mom's been upset all evening."

Karen replied, "Oh, forget it. That's just the kind of man he is."

Then Tamsin's aunt, Lenora Ryder, joined in. "It's your mother-in-law's birthday. No matter how upset you are, you should just swallow your pride for one day. Now you've embarrassed the whole family!"

Another relative, Celeste Harper, added, "I've been saying for years that he's no good. He didn't even bother showing his mother-in-law any respect last Christmas, and now he's pulled this stunt."

My phone buzzed again. This time, Tamsin was calling.

I answered.

"Trent!" she snapped, her voice sharp with anger. She sounded like she'd been holding it in all evening and had finally found someone to take it out on. "Mom only turns 60 once! What the hell is your problem?

"All she asked was for you to take Elsie to Popeyes! What's the big deal? Did you seriously have to cut off my spending account and cancel the cards over something so stupid? Do you have any idea how humiliating it was when my card got declined at the restaurant?"

I cut her off. "It's my money, Tamsin. I can cut you off whenever I want. I don't need your permission."

Tamsin exploded. "We're married, Trent! We're a family! Why are you suddenly acting like we have separate money?"

"Family?" I let out a bitter laugh. "Then why did your mother kick me out today? Apparently, I'm not even family enough to deserve a seat at the table."

"Because there weren't enough seats!" Tamsin snapped. "It's Mom's birthday. Couldn't you have just sucked it up for once? Seriously, what's gotten into you today?"

"Tamsin." I was so angry that my eyes were burning. "I've put up with this crap for six years."

"When your mother moved in with us, I didn't complain. When your sister started bringing Milo over for free dinners every single night, I kept my mouth shut. That's been going on for three years now.

"Milo hogs Elsie's desk, breaks her toys, and tears up her drawing books. Every time I say something, you tell me he's just a kid, and I should let it go. And every single time, I do. And after all that, your mother can't even spare us a couple of chairs at her birthday dinner!"

Tamsin went quiet for three seconds.

"You're overreacting," she finally said, sighing. "You know how Mom is. She's got a sharp tongue, but she has a good heart. Now you've canceled the cards and blown this whole thing out of proportion. How are we supposed to fix things after this?"

Through it all, she hadn't once asked where Elsie was, whether she'd had dinner, or if she was okay.

Karen turned toward me, her voice cracking. "Trent, you can't do this to my daughter! Tamsin's your wife! She's Elsie's mother! If she goes to jail, what's going to happen to Elsie? Do you really want your daughter to grow up without a mom?"I turned to Kurt. "I want it on record that Tamsin lied during this investigation, and I intend to pursue the matter. Karen also knowingly gave a false statement to cover for her. I expect that to be investigated as well."Kurt got to his feet and turned to Tamsin. "Tamsin Whitlock, we'll need you to come with us."Karen completely lost it. She glared at me. "This is all your fault! If you hadn't demanded a divorce, Tamsin wouldn't have gone out for a drive to clear her head!"Even now, she was finding a way to blame me. No matter what Tamsin did, Karen still saw her as the innocent victim."Tamsin caused the accident. She fled the scene. She lied to the police, and she got you to lie for her." I looked Karen straight in the eye."Your daught

Two police officers sat across from me in the interview room.Officer Kurt Mercer brought up some dashcam footage. "We took this from your car. It clearly shows the car clipping the scooter and driving off without stopping. Now, look at this."He pulled up a screenshot and zoomed in. It showed the view from the driver's seat, but the angle was too high. All that was visible above the steering wheel was part of an arm and half a shoulder.Whoever was driving had on a dark jacket. There was no way to tell who it was."The dashcam doesn't show the driver's face," Kurt said. "That's why we need to find out who was driving at the time."He studied me for a moment. "Trent, did you drive your Mercedes at all after five yesterday afternoon?""No.""Is there anyone who can back that up?""Would my daughter's kindergarten teacher count? I picked Elsie up at 4:30 pm yesterday, then took a cab straight to the restaurant." I paused. "I can show you the cab receipt and give you the license p

I froze in the doorway. "What?"The older police officer stated, "At 11:47 pm last night, a white Mercedes with a license plate ending in 888 clipped an electric scooter, injuring the rider. The car drove off without stopping, but a witness got the plate number.""Officer, my Mercedes does have a plate ending in 888," I said, "but I didn't drive it yesterday."The younger police officer checked his notepad, then looked up. "You sure?""Absolutely," I said calmly. "I was home all night after 11:00 pm."He wrote something down. "Does anyone else have access to your car?""My wife drives it sometimes.""What's her name?""Tamsin Whitlock."The older officer nodded. "We'll need to look into that. For now, we'll need you to come down to the station and give a statement. We'll also need to inspect your car.""My daughter's still asleep," I said. "Can I take her to the neighbor's before we go?""Sure. Just don't take too long."I went back inside and carefully lifted Elsie out of

After six years of spending my money, Karen had gotten so used to it that she didn't even think twice anymore. She genuinely believed she was entitled to every penny.Karen smacked Tamsin hard on the arm. "Say something, for God's sake! Are you just going to stand there while your husband tries to take everything from you?"Tamsin looked at me, a mixture of emotions crossing her face."Trent," she said, her voice hoarse. "Can we please talk about this? Elsie's still so young. She needs her mother. Have you thought about what this will do to her?"I stared at her. So she'd finally remembered Elsie. Not because she cared, but because she thought she could use our daughter to get her way."Getting divorced doesn't mean Elsie has to grow up without a mother," I said. "That's up to you and whether you're willing to be a decent mom. A decent mom wouldn't throw away her daughter's drawing right in front of her."And she sure as hell wouldn't spend her husband's money supporting her whol

"Leave with nothing?" Karen shrieked. "Who the hell do you think you are? You can't just kick my daughter out with nothing! That car is hers!""I bought that car," I cut in. "Want me to pull up the bank statements? We can go through them line by line and see exactly how much your daughter has earned over the past six years compared to how much she's spent."Karen had nothing to say to that.Tamsin stared at the divorce papers, her fingers trembling. "Trent...""Don't," I said. "I'm recording everything you say from now on, so choose your words carefully."I took out my phone, hit record, and held up the screen for her to see.The hallway went dead silent. Then Karen burst into tears. She plopped down on the floor by the door, slapping her thighs as she wailed. "What did I ever do to deserve this? On my 60th birthday, of all days! Look how you're treating my poor daughter! God, why is this happening to me?"Marlowe quickly crouched beside her, trying to help her up while rubbing

Tamsin smiled and reached for the papers. She asked, "What's this?""Divorce papers," I replied. The smiles vanished from their faces.Karen snatched the papers out of my hand and squinted at the first few lines. "You want a divorce? Trent, what are you playing at?"She shoved the papers in my face. "Oh, don't start with me! I've seen this kind of drama before! We told you to take Elsie to Popeyes, and now you want a divorce? Are you seriously making that big a deal out of it?"I said nothing."Have you lost your mind?" Tamsin stared at me in disbelief. "You want a divorce over a stupid dinner? Trent, what the hell is wrong with you?"Marlowe jumped in. "Exactly! Trent, seriously, what have we ever done to you? You've had it pretty good with our family! You've already ruined Mom's 60th birthday, and now you want a divorce? Wait, are you having an affair?"Karen immediately turned to me, giving me a suspicious once-over. "Trent, you'd better tell me the truth. Are you seeing som
