Chapter 1

I lay in the ICU with various tubes in my nose and mouth, my face bandaged, and my four limbs in casts. I wanted to hurl, but I couldn't move. Every second felt like torture.

"How is she, doctor?"

Just as I thought I couldn't hold on any longer, I finally heard Frank's voice outside the door.

"She's in pretty rough shape, the worst of her injuries being the comminuted fractures she sustained in several places—"

"No, I don't want to hear about that! What I want to know is if her face will recover!" Frank cut the doctor off anxiously.

At his question, the solace that had barely settled in my heart was eclipsed by doubt.

I'd been caught in the blast when I tried to save him from an explosion earlier, the shockwave sending me flying. I got away with multiple fractures and internal bleeding.

It was bad enough that Frank had called me "Isabella" in the ambulance instead of my given name, Selena, but now, he took it up a notch by fussing over my cut-up face rather than the worst of my injuries.

"Isabella? What are you doing here? Where's my dad?" I heard Frank ask.

"Doctor, you're dismissed." A female voice I'd never heard before rang out like an unexpected bell chime. "Frank, I heard you found yourself a cheap double of me since my return to Itaria a year ago. Is that true?"

The woman's words were laced with contempt and mockery. My heart raced as some pieces of the puzzle began to click into place.

"Isabella, you'll always be the only one I hold in my heart. You're all I can think about when she and I are making love. But you're already married to my father.

"What do you expect me to do? Call you 'Mom' and ask you for a kiss like a kid barely out of diapers?"

Frank's reply struck me like a thunderbolt, shattering the last of my dignity. Tears rolled down my cheeks and into my ears.

A year ago, I'd been desperate and on the brink of suicide when the rich and handsome Frank Luccasio saved me.

He punished the thugs who'd tried to force me into prostitution and paid off my student loans. He also paid for my mother's cancer treatment and sent my younger sister into a rehabilitation facility for her drug addiction.

No one cared about me before he came along, let alone protected and looked after me. I once believed he was the only shining light in my life, burning so brightly that he'd chased away the darkness.

Only now did I understand that this beam of light never truly belonged to me.

No wonder Frank's intense love for me came out of nowhere. His gaze was always unfocused when he looked at me, and he'd always regulated my words and behavior.

As it turned out, he was refining me into a better imitation of Isabella, yet I'd stupidly believed he was teaching me the etiquette of fine society.

"That's why we should go back to your apartment and stay put there before the old fart comes home. He's almost 70! I've practically been a widow for a whole year!" Isabella's voice, thick with desire and complaint, came through the gap in the door.

The heart monitor beeped frantically, alerting the doctor and nurses, who rushed in to revive me with defibrillation.

"Mr. Luccasio, Ms. Romano will have to undergo a high-risk surgery. Her next-of-kin may have to sign a consent and waiver at any point during the surgery," I heard my attending physician anxiously inform Frank.

Frank, who'd been worried about me at least up until a moment ago, paused for a second before replying in bewilderment, "I'm not her next-of-kin. Have her mom or younger sister sign it instead."

"But her mother's still in chemotherapy, and her younger sister is in drug rehab."

There was a beat of silence, as if Frank was hesitating for my sake.

"I know you're worried about her because she saved your life, Frank, but you sponsored her plenty before this and took care of her family. As far as our family's rules go, you've repaid the life debt you owed her," Isabella advised softly.

"Besides, it's been a year since we last saw each other. Don't let an outsider get in the way of us catching up, okay?"

"Doctor, sign the paperwork on my behalf," Frank said.

Upon hearing his decision, I realized how foolish I'd been to hope.

The beam of light that never belonged to me left alongside faded footsteps, and darkness returned to my world.

I was wheeled into the operating room alone and underwent seven surgeries in three days. I survived them all through sheer will alone.

Frank didn't visit me once while I lay in the hospital. He didn't so much as call.

In the dead of the night, I pulled up his Instagram profile and discovered that he'd deleted all our pictures. Now that the real Isabella had returned, the memories he shared with a cheap double like me were nothing but a waste of space.

I bit my lower lip until a coppery tang gradually filled my mouth. No painkiller was strong enough to numb my heartache.

My phone slid out of my hand. I took a deep breath and told myself it was time to let go.

If Frank hadn't appeared all those years ago, I might have taken my own life. Now that I'd saved him from an explosion, we were even. He'd sponsored my family and me, and I'd repaid him with my body and soul. The scores were settled.

So when I was strong enough to move around with crutches, I called a number I hadn't dialed for an entire month.

Frank clearly hadn't realized the gravity of the situation. He stormed toward me, only to be stopped by George's men.I walked up to him and mused softly, "I bet you didn't think you'd end up losing to me, huh, Frank?"I handed the second folder to George. "I suggest you mentally prepare yourself for what you're about to see in this folder, George."When he took the folder entitled "Investigation Report on Andrew's Accident", his blue eyes, faded with age, flickered. After he finished reading the entire report, he immediately grabbed Frank by the collar and dragged him forward, seething, "You never even had a full meal before I saved you and brought you home at the age of seven! How could you do something like this?"Frank snorted. "Because you only ever cared about Andrew, even though I've done so much for you! You said the family needed a wolf, so why would you make a sheep your heir?"George staggered back at this, his eyes flickering without focusing. I knew the old Don was s

"Who the hell are you? Selena?" Isabella demanded from where she sat beside the main seat. She was the first to lose her cool."Sorry, but everyone here knows I'm Isabella. Who the hell are you? An impostor, no doubt," I sneered.Next to her, Frank rose nervously and made to approach me.At that moment, George appeared and snaked an arm around my waist."Dad?" Frank stopped in his tracks, shock coloring his tone. But the next second, he chuckled and leveled a scathing look at me. "Did you fall for a con artist, Dad?""Are you calling me old? Or do you somehow know my wife better than I do?" George narrowed his eyes at Frank as he countered tersely."No, that's not what I meant," Frank explained right away, shaking his head."Then why is that charlatan of a whore still sitting there? Take her away," I ordered coolly, maintaining the elegance of a Don's wife.It wasn't long before a few burly men in black held Isabella in place, not that it kept her from lifting her chin haught

George's villa was tucked away on an island. It was a last-century building surrounded by the ocean. The butler ferried me to the island in a speedboat, after which I waited for George's private jet to land. The cabin door of the jet opened to reveal an old gentleman in a woollen turtleneck. He came out with a cane, his elegance reminding me of my college professor.Unlike Frank, who wore his malice on his sleeve, the Don had an amiable air about him."I came here as soon as I got your text. Forgive me for not changing out of these clothes," he said warmly after getting off the plane. His friendly tone eased the knots in my stomach. He took off his shades and eyed me sympathetically. "Did they do that to your face? The Luccasio family would never do this to women!""It's a long story." I shrugged in resignation."In that case, you can fill me in on the details once we're inside. After all, the sea breeze is terrible for your scars."Just like that, I followed George to his livi

It was pouring outside, and there were hardly any cars or pedestrians on the streets. There was nothing unusual about the building across the townhouse, either. When I remained silent for a long time, Frank said smugly, "I take it that I guessed correctly."Only then did I realize he hadn't actually found me. He was only making a fool out of me. He was a devil, but more than that, he was cunning and perceptive."Damn you, Frank! What the hell do you want?" I demanded."I want you to come back, Isabella. I've been busy lately. Don't make me waste my time and energy hunting you down. You know you can't run, so go back to my apartment," Frank drawled, his cadence low but firm.I hated how he was always so full of himself and thought he could keep me under his thumb."Listen, my face is already ruined. I can no longer satisfy your twisted needs!" I seethed."I can give you the money you need to fix your face, but I suggest you stop testing my patience. Don't forget your mother and A

"What's going on? Do you know each other?" Nancy asked in surprise."Mom, I'll explain later." Dexter gave Nancy's shoulder a comforting squeeze before chasing after me. He demanded anxiously, "Selena, where are you going looking like that?"I wondered begrudgingly if Newborough was smaller than I expected and how I managed to run into someone who happened to know my past. I snapped at him, "Dexter, are you going to take me to see Frank?"Dexter froze, then explained gently, "I'm a doctor, Selena. All I want is to treat your injuries.""You know who I am, yet you'll let me into your home in my current state, no questions asked?" I pressed."You're my mother's guest, and that's enough reason for me."Dexter's answer was sincere. Could I simply be overreacting?"Has he hurt you before as well, child?" Nancy prompted, frowning as she came over."No, Nancy. He's the only person who's ever saved me. Literally," I replied.I gazed at the drizzle pouring from the night sky. As I wa

Frank and Isabella were still going at it after I'd sent the text to the Don.I couldn't stay here and wait for someone else to decide my fate, so I gave myself a pep talk. "Pull yourself together, Selena! You escaped your father after he groped you and the hooligan when he tried to sell you into prostitution."You can escape these two devils who want to control you, too!"I bit my lower lip, rallied my strength to get to my feet, and bolted for the door of the warehouse.Frank's Aston Martin was parked outside. I opened the car door, surprised when it gave way. I couldn't believe he hadn't removed my biometrics.Without dwelling on it, I stepped on the gas pedal and took off.I'd driven about half a mile before I abandoned his car and tried to flag down passing cars, all so Frank couldn't track me down. However, the cars on the road sped past me. I didn't blame them. With my gruesomely cut-up face and my bedraggled clothes, I looked like bad news—and no one wanted to get themse
